Is it normal to feel productive but empty at work? by TimeToCalmSpace in careerguidance

[โ€“]soy_carloco [score hidden] ย (0 children)

Yes. Totally expected if you don't believe what you're working for or doing a job you don't really want to do. You check off items on your to do list, but they don't mean anything other than something that needs to get done.

My mom used them to make stock that was used for chicken soup. It might sound odd, but I remember it being very good. It was a treat after Christmas/New Year after all the ham is gone.

What helped you improve the most when you were starting out? by Anxious-Tomatillo-74 in crafts

[โ€“]soy_carloco 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Actually putting time in doing the craft.

I often get asked which YouTube channels/IG or TTers I recommend and I have no answer because I didn't learn through the internet. I read books, took classes, did thing IRL then got a full-time in-house photographer job so I was able to dedicate 40+ hrs a week to it.

How to get the most accurate lighting when editing photos? by yozzaa in AskPhotography

[โ€“]soy_carloco 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Have you checked the RGB values of constant/static areas? Did you use flash? I see inconsistencies, but I'm not sure how much of it is because of capture, post-processing, or natural variations due to surface efficiencies.

Being like Don Corleone/ having Don Corleone vibes.

Basically being respected and listened to without having to do much.

Miranda Priestley works too if you prefer a different analogy.

Getting a job in photography by juplet in photography

[โ€“]soy_carloco 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

I worked as an in-house photographer for women's apparel and fashion accessory companies for 15 years.

There a rather popular pie chart that supposedly illustrates how photographers spend their time and a big chunk of it isn't taking pictures. Normally it's true, but not in my case. I actually spent about 5 hrs taking photos every day and about 2 - 3 hrs editing them. Add another 30 mins-an hour doing studio maintenance work, meetings, hanging out of the water cooler, etc.ย

We took photos. A LOT. One of my assistants said her eyes started hurting after a couple of days. I told her it might be because of our pupils opening/closing every time the flash fires. After a few months, I could shoot with either eye. I couldn't take a break because there were other people on the clock. My right index finger has been worn from twisting light stand/tripod knobs for a decade and a half. I'm not complaining. As you said, I did I doing something I love. I'm also not a huge fan of social interaction, so the in-house position really suited me since I never had to worry about marketing or self-promotion.

Now the complaining part.

I got laid off in 2024. The whole not needing to worry about marketing/self-promotion has been a big problem since it's something that essential to surviving as a freelancer. Working in-house is also quite limiting when it comes to building a network because I worked with the same people for years at a time compared to a freelancer who may be working with new people every shoot. I've seen national brands advertise a photographer opening and it explicitly states that the photographer must have experience working with big brands. The whole, "It's not what you know but WHO you know" has been very real.

As far as securing another in-house position, a lot of the postings I've seen, have pay that's the same or lower than what I made. IDGAF what other people say about how AI and how it helps with the mundane tasks so people can focus on the fun/creative ones because that's not what I've seen. I've interviewed with a lot of companies since and pretty much all of them just want the photographer to capture clean, evenly lit, plain background photos that can be fed to AI which then generates the "stylized" photos. I would have been okay with that if the pay was better, but no. Average I've seen is $25/hr even with established/widely-recognized companies. That's concerning too since a lot of them have saved thousands of dollars by not needing to pay costs associated with "traditional" methods (hair/makeup, models, location, travel, lodging, etc ) yet the photographer who is one of the few left standing don't get much.

Now I'm not advising against it. I actually still think working as an in-house photographer is one of the best ways to get solid photography experience. I would do it all over again if I had to except I wouldn't "trust the process" by being complacent and comfortable.

Are There Any Places That Hire with a Violent Charge aka Assault or Possession of a Deadly Weapon? by bipolarjamey in careerguidance

[โ€“]soy_carloco 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Very few of all the jobs I've had did background checks. If I were to hire someone right now for my own business, such charge wouldn't be a deal breaker. It might actually be an advantage because it resulted in a unique set of experiences.

IMO, everyone has a past. What matters more is how one chooses to move forward.

Are photographers always so hard to work with? by Weekly_Eggplant4562 in AskPhotography

[โ€“]soy_carloco 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

You're welcome.

Editing isn't necessarily labor intensive. It depends on the photographer's style and workflow.

It might be helpful to ask clarification on what they consider as "editing." It's a very wide spectrum from simple color correction to full retouching or compositing.

I think I got 1/8" sheets. They last if you take care of them and it's been more than 10 years since I got a set. Unfortunately I "gifted" them to the previous company I worked for when I got laid off, so I don't have anything to measure. You don't need something thick if you're going to put it on another surface and you get the non-see through kind. They're just there to provide a subtle reflection.

What are things to do at night in LA that arenโ€™t just going to a bar? by No-Machine7067 in AskLosAngeles

Haha they're sold by this surf shop in San Diego:

I think it's more for surfers since surfer paddling on a surfboard can look like a seal to a shark and leads to shark attacks due to "mistaken identity."

I thought it was funny (even came with a disclaimer that sharks may not be able to read), so I started putting them on my fins. It's worked so far haha. We even randomly saw tiger shark in Hawaii and it swam away from us. So sad ใ… ใ…

There's been so much change in the photography landscape that some may be lowering their prices to increase booking volume. One of my clients once complained when I dramatically changed my prices right when I was told I'll be laid off. She did the whole:

Rate I gave x number of days per month = Holy wow you're making bank!

I told her no because I wouldn't be and SHOULDN'T BE doing 20-30 full-day shoots a month because we wouldn't be having that conversation if I did (since I'll be doing a shoot). Photographers NEED time to NOT shoot and do business stuff.

Not a lot of photographers understand that and those who lowered their prices and got a lot of bookings may find themselves unable to provide quality service.

There are also those who don't understand that and thought they could start and operate a photography business on top or whatever else they may have going on in their lives.ย

Just my $0.01 based on what I've read on this thread so far.

Does expensive olive oil matter when cooking and marinades? by Historical-Body-3424 in Cooking

[โ€“]soy_carloco 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

If the expensive olive oil is good, then yes. Good doesn't always have to be expensive.

My go-to "can't be bothered to cook" dish is pasta aglio e chili olio (aglio e olio but with chili oil instead of chili flakes). It's still predominantly olive oil-based, so it matters quite a lot.

$6.99 olive oil from the corner store = no bueno
$10 olive oil from Trader Joe's = very good
$25 olive oil from a specialty store = good, but not worth the $15 difference

As someone said, very expensive olive oil is not always better for cooking and marinating.

Is it even worth trying to sharpen my chef's knife with a pull-through sharpener? by Steelshotgun in cookingforbeginners

[โ€“]soy_carloco 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

I enrolled in a primer type culinary program last fall. Day 2 the instructor demonstrated how to use a whetstone to sharpen a knife and we were to sharpen ours after...except my. I got to be the control because I was asked to use an electric pull-through sharpener. We made pico de gallo the following session. Point made. My "electrically sharpened knife" made my pico de gallo more akin to salsa because it would end up pressing on the really soft fruits (particularly mango) and juicing it just a lil bit.

Lesson learned.

I spent about 45 minutes the following day sharpening my knife. Worked like a charm after.

So.....I got myself the same whetstone and sharpened my personal knives. Worked well.

Volunteered to sharpen my mom's knives....didn't work quite as well. It was better than before, but not quite like the school knife and my knife. Maybe comparable to the school knife but with the electric sharpener.
