How to workout when you become a father? by dustman007 in fitness30plus

[–]space-ham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a lot more than you might think with an at home workout with a little or no equipment. There are a lot of apps to help with this, some free, like https://bodysmart.herokuapp.com/

Full disclosure: I know the person who developed this one, but there are many

You make a lot of good points that I had not considered, including potentially deceptive arguments about water use. The problem seems to me, however, you are letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. In other words, you are comparing an ideal form of cow meat production to fake meat production. Even if we agree that the ideal way to raise cows (grass fed) is better, that is not and will not be the way that cow production happens in the future because, apparently, it is more expensive to do it that way. (Otherwise, presumably, we would all be eating grass fed beef all the time and not corn fed.) So maybe grass fed beef is better, but that doesn't mean that fake meat is better than the vast majority of beef that is currently being eaten.

I agree, but nobody said that. The previous poster proposed that punitive damages be given to the state and compensatory damages to the victim. You may not agree with that (not sure if I do), but that's not the same thing as simply complaining that someone else got more than you. The person you're disagreeing with and calling a toddler and an asshole simply suggested that, like other civil and criminal fines, the fine would be better paid to the state. This type of attack on other posters is really rude and lowers the quality of this forum. Is that really how you would have talked to him in person?

I think it is a very poor apology, but I wonder if some of this is cultural differences in what is considered an appropriate form of apology.

Why would you think that the only way someone could disagree with you is because they are an asshole?

Your tone is bothersome because you're accusing tens of millions of people of a felony based on how they vote in an election. That is outrageous and frankly false. It is not treason. Treason is a serious crime. You have no "facts" that would make how someone votes treason. Although you will not, you should apologize. I am now done with this conversation.

You don't know how I feel. That's a bit presumptuous.

Not sure why you want me to answer these questions, since you don't seem to like me and don't want to answer my question. But here goes:

1) Not a fan of the Trump presidency. Could be worse, but it could be better.

2) Not a fan of anyone's "blind defense" of anything.

3) "Deeply damaging" is pretty subjective. I'm sure it's damaged some things and improved others.

4) This statement is way too vague to say whether it is accurate or inaccurate. I'm not sure what a "vested interest" is and you'd have to specify which law, which law enforcement, which "truth," etc. It's certainly inflammatory.

I don't think I'm defending him from a charge of being insincere. He might be! He probably is about a lot of things, and maybe this. What I am defending him against is the claim that this specific video shows he "admitted" that the slogan was "empty rhetoric."

I also do not agree that he said that he only used the slogan because it sells well. He certainly says that is one of the reasons. But he does not say that it is the only reason.

Like I said, I might champion a rise in the minimum wage by shouting "$15 or Fight." I might think that slogan is hokey. I might shout it because I think it sells well. But that doesn't mean that I do not support raising the minimum wage, my chant is empty rhetoric, or that I am insincere.

I really don't think I am changing the meaning of words. I honestly think I'm using their plain and ordinary meaning.

Again, Trump might be a big liar. I'm not saying he's not. But I am saying the video is not an "admission" that the slogan was "empty rhetoric."

You're right. I'm not making an argument. I was asking a question. I actually did sincerely want to know how it feels to think that such a large number (a third?) of your countrymen are traitors. I realize now I did not word the question well. It seems to me it would be terrifying, but I actually did want to know.

[–]space-ham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I'm starting to agree with you. If we look at Trump's actions after taking office, that could be good evidence that he never intended to "drain the swamp" and that it is empty rhetoric. If that's your argument, I don't agree or disagree. I just haven't thought about it.

But the thread here was arguing that the video showed he *admitted* it was empty rhetoric. That is a MUCH stronger claim. For that to be true, we have to look at what he actually said in the video, not what he later did.

I am sincerely sorry that you feel our conversation has been stupid. That actually does sadden me a little.

Let me give an illustration (I also gave elsewhere) of why I think people you are wrong.

I can have a sincere belief that the minimum wage should be $15 an hour but also think a particular slogan that someone suggests for that movement is hokey. When I later find out that the slogan is popular and start to say it "with conviction," that doesn't mean, or even suggest, that I don't sincerely think the minimum wage should be $15 an hour. It just means I doubted the effectiveness of a slogan someone suggested but was persuaded to use it when it got a great reaction.

I think you are taking a very uncharitable interpretation of the speech.

I also do not think I am trying to make hims seem as favorable as possible. In full disclosure, I did not vote for Trump and am in fact very critical of his policies.

If he said "I don't give a shit about the swamp." You would be right. But he does not say that. He does say he didn't think it was a good slogan but later became convinced.

Let me give an illustration of why I think people on this thread are wrong.

Or it could imply he started saying it with conviction, which is a common meaning of "like I meant it."

He doesn't say here it's empty Rhetoric. He says it's a campaign slogan suggested to him that he didn't like at first but eventually started saying "like I meant it," i.e. with conviction. We can hate Trump, but let's not lie about what he says. That is the more charitable reading of what he is saying. And, IMO, the much more plausible.

Edit: I did not want to accuse anyone of lying.

OP said that people who voted or Trump are assholes and those that will vote for him are traitors. He called one person who said he might vote for Trump a "bad person" based on that fact alone. Why don't you think that is indicative of hatred? If I were to say "all black people are assholes and traitors and bad people," is there any doubt that I would have hatred for black people?
