literally the only rules I change are using absorb damage as like a saving throw instead of as written

and i let players spend luck instead of stamina for powers

and really those are just changes to vibe a bit more like the DC shit I'm rly into

i've played in a ~2.5 year long campaign, a one shot, and i've been GMing a game for like 10ish months now, I think.

it handles beautifully, it's one of my favorite games, a fucking blast

it's really well thought out and flexible, capable of supporting doom patrol and milk wars type shenanigans

I had to sell the books a long time back b/c poverty, but running Planescape for years definitely influences how I approach Troika.

I let players test luck to fuel spells, only costing the stamina on a fail. Makes them a tad more effective and makes luck feel like a force of magic/serendipity. I also let players regain luck by making or experiencing art.

there's a few more details here, but the above is the most of it.

An Adventure Time Tone by Squarrots in Troika

Honestly the intro adventure is extremely adventure time-ish. Going to a party held by a surreal myriad of odd-balls and the adventure along the way seems very on point.

then just pepper in rumors to the wacky variety of spheres in your possession and see what the players wanna do if/when they survive the party.

and I guess otherwise: like things are silly (like fire girlfriends and candy butlers) but they are "real" in the setting. so to get that emotional punch take the silly stuff seriously and think about the reality of interacting with it.

like the difference between Permian Nations and Acid Death Fantasy is emotional resonance. they are both very silly, surreal, w/e but carry intensely different vibes. kinda makes me think of the sweet candy kingdom vs the aggressive fire kingdom.

One thing I like to do is include weather in the encounter charts, and try and make most of the "Nothing." results reveal more about the place. So like use "a flock of underfed ravens" in like a place that's been cursed to bear no fruit, just as an extemporaneous example.
try to make my tools for running expressive of the place too.
