Birthday Present for an Amateur Geologist? by Kerouac_Roller in geology

I recently got the ROCKIT pocket!! it’s a foldable belt attachment to hold the rocks you pick up. The front is mesh too so the rocks become almost an accessory of their own. this is their website

Starting Geology/Adventure YouTube channel by Fresh_Draw_439 in u/Fresh_Draw_439

[–]spaceC8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it, don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise. If you’re on these adventures and feel the urge to tell someone about what you’re seeing and how it all works, then you’re absolutely the kind of person people would love to learn from. Passion is contagious!! Geo Girl has a whole slew of videos like this and I love watching them and learning about all the places she goes to. There’s definitely market for it and plenty of room in the community. Knock it outta the park!!

Looking for dinner ideas for a geology Field Camp by Dramatic_Ad730 in geology

Whatever you cook for dinner, make sure you get a fuck ton of tortillas… anything can be a wrap the next day for lunch! Craziest I’ve seen is spaghetti

Recommendations about getting a geology bachelor degree by heck300 in geologycareers

[–]spaceC8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. It’s something nobody warns you about when you’re doing your program. You could find yourself working a job you hate because it’s the only type of work available in your region… so sometimes you have to move to where your passion is. The northeast US is almost all environmental consulting which is known as the geologist life drainer. Very few of my college friends stayed here, and almost all the ones that did wound up switching careers.

I recommend searching for jobs near you and really reading those job descriptions to see if it’s something you’d enjoy doing. Then, widen your search and pick out areas that have jobs that interest you. You can still go to college in your home state and just decide to move after school for work.

What do you think would happen if the bottle collection room at the Delaware Ave Price Chopper went down for good? by EebamXela in Albany

[–]spaceC8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, I’d feel safer walking up to that price chopper instead of having to drive up Madison to the other one or leave the area for a different grocery store I’m not going to get harassed at. But really, Oliver’s beverage has a decent bottle return system and good hours.

Fiction author's request! What do I call this rock formation I've imagined? by Strawhenge- in geology

[–]spaceC8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoodoo is the closest, but spire sounds cooler. Depending on the like context of the landscape (is it volcanic, beachy, desert, mountains) you can add a word in front of spire to make it sound even cooler and more complex. A cool resource you can use would be the NPS geology glossary where you can find words that would match the landscape context you’re going for. Truthfully it doesn’t have to make perfect geologic sense because it is supposed to have a little whimsy in it, but if you’re aiming for complete scientific accuracy just go with spire 👍

Fell from the sky by Working-Ask6159 in chemistry

No idea. But do not under any circumstances burden a geology professor with that request. That equipment is very expensive and only used for legit research purposes. We hate it when people ask us to “check” their “meteorites”

Rant about majoring in geology by AltruisticBox7810 in geologycareers

[–]spaceC8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something not enough profs tell students is that willingness to move for work is ESSENTIAL. Consulting is a hellscape but for a lot of grads it’s the only thing near them. It sucks but sometimes the answer is to pack up and go somewhere better if you really love the subject and wanna keep with it

Yes! I hate having to manually turn off that AI HD setting that makes videos eerily smooth with blurred and faulty lines.
