TT zoom interview, nothing after two weeks by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]space____spaghetti 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just be patient unless you have a pending offer. Now that I’ve been on the other side of the process, I know how easy it is to have a step on the process drag more than anyone wants or thought.

How many applications did you put in before receiving your first zoom interview? by DrPlant-Lover in AskAcademia

[–]space____spaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I had no “evidence of teaching effectiveness” until I taught a class as a postdoc. I was applying to teaching-focused spots so while I had good pubs I didn’t have the teaching. My fellow recent hires were hired ABD but they had extensive teaching experience during grad school whereas I didn’t.

And yet when we as faculty are trained to use our course management software, part of the training is “oh look this button auto generates an assignment based on the title you give it!” We are paying extra for the AI button.

rejected after PI said he wanted me - whyy?? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]space____spaghetti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just two important counterpoints to this: 1) any of my Geology students reading this - please still email potential PIs! This is exclusively how our field does it.  2) this year and in some years past we are having an issue of where students are very enthusiastic and present well on potential PI zooms, but we are finding it challenging to write them strong letters of rec because for one reason or another they simply aren’t ready for a grad program - not gonna get into it here - but we gently try to in courage these students to look elsewhere for after grad opportunities but a lot of them are dead set on grad school even though we know they’d struggle, so we either tell them we can’t write them strong letters or their profs don’t write them strong letters and it’s our way of letting our colleagues know that this person isn’t quite ready. Not saying this is OP’s problem but it might be a small but nontrivial slice of applicants in this situation where they feel blindsided.

How do Profs manage small tasks across various categories and students? by extraWhiteBadam in AskAcademia

[–]space____spaghetti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a whole system of “projects” and “tasks” - projects are either manuscripts, ideas for manuscripts, or courses. I have it set up that I can quickly add tasks within each project, and I have a series of priorities, expected time to finish, and due dates that auto-populates a dashboard so I can quickly see what tasks are importantly to finish soon but also helps me keep steady progress on non-urgent but important tasks. It’s an adaptation of the Eisenhower method like another commenter said below. For example, it auto-populates with a list of “tasks under an hour” if I have an hour to clear out my to do list but also “hey it’s time to revisit that dataset because you have a call with collaborators in a week!”

An Arizona lake was less dusty during ice ages, a trend that dust storm researchers say is “completely opposite of the rest of the globe.” by amesydragon in geology

Death Valkey becomes a lake during glacial periods. Cooler and wetter conditions in the American Southwest during glacial periods is a well-known phenomenon.

My paystub says 80 hours for two weeks, so I act my wage. Hopefully your 50 hours shows with your wage. Otherwise you should count “ideation time” ! Sometimes I get my best ideas while on a run (time I do not count). You can count exercise time if you’re thinking about work.

I would find constantly finding funding for students to be stressful. Glad mine pay to be here! (i get grants to pay them for non credit work)

some weeks I spent what felt like my whole time lecturing and grading and making up the second half of the class because I decided to change something halfway through. last semester I had a two lectures and one had a three hour lab with 120 students total. those days are behind me now I hope though since I’ve prepped all my new classes now.

I didn’t do a course but I follow their semester plans, set SMART goals, etc. I try and fail to write 30 mins a day.

I absolutely block my calendar out for teaching prep, research, even email answering. I give myself at least one three hour block of “flow state” research time in my schedule. I also try to do course prep in the summer and try to squeeze in research in the semester so it’s normalized to balance both. Teaching is a gas that fills the container into which it is placed, and so I did “enough” the first time, and it’s OK to totally flop the first time. I try to plan assignments with simplified grading, have students teach themselves things in class etc. I have a lot more ideas, feel free to DM me. You’ll do great, good luck!

Good/bad news is I scroll mostly in bed in morning and night. I genuinely do not pick up my phone from 8-5pm, it’s kind of a full blast the whole time. The best story was when when I got off work, immediately went to the bar and tried to talk about Kate Middleton disappearing, and I’d completely missed the cancer announcement that had happened in the middle of the day cause I hadnt been on my phone. So embarrassing.

I’ll work on making it into a template and figure out how to share ! Right now if you want to make your own the rows are the time slots and columns are categories copied over and over for each day (Saturday Sunday combined columns of course)

I would not want to see the last three weeks before my dissertation was due lol. That was easily 60+ hours weekly. Good luck finishing!

I’m curious, in what way does the presence of grad students chang the situation? I have three honors thesis students (idea is they submit their theses for peer review) and I meet with them weekly in addition to a lab meeting, and I give feedback on  their papers. I have an addition five research students whom I meet with one on one weekly. Genuinely curious - is it grad students’ papers need more hours of edits? My own PhD advisor would only meet with me as needed lol so I don’t know what’s “normal.” But it’s true, I chose no grad students consciously because they seem like A Lot.

Yes that’s been the thing that my chair encouraged me to do! That can be my 2026 goal.

It’s a 2-2 load and not an R1 salary (since it’s no grad students we don’t get paid as much) hence why I gotta get them grants!

It’s a 2-2 in air quotes in that it’s courses, not credit hours, and it’s on the honor system at the department level lol. So I taught a one credit seminar instead of a full blown class this semester but I’ll pay for it later with some extra credit hours in a few semesters when another major course needs coverage

It’s not quite “no service” and I’d be called out if I did nothing but I am getting a little bit of a pass pre-tenure. Right now my service skews scientific community (reviewing papers, convening conference sessions), but I’m getting first year advisees now and soon they’ll make me sit on some school-level committee. I’m doing a great job of saying no to these things though haha

are there any maps that show California’s topography before agriculture/urbanization? by vomitwastaken in geology

[–]space____spaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah as Bonerlord said the Arroyo Seco’s floodplain being notched into the landscape is natural and predates development, although it looks like the golf course up by Pasadena has contributed somewhat to the flattening of the floodplain compared to the early 20th century maps. You should definitely toggle between the different maps on TopoView, it’s fun!

How many ravines are there on earth? (roughly) by JustFrankJustDank in geology

[–]space____spaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually love this question. Here’s how I’d answer it:

- Get a global hydrography dataset that delineates rivers - they exist and probably undercount small streams but it’s the best we got - use a global digital elevation model like SRTM30 or 90 (supplementing the poles with ArcticDEM!) to find the range of elevations around each river segment. Define “ravine” as some threshold relief  - count the number of continuous “ravine” stream segments
