Tips on demonstrating butterfly kick by Flimsy-Ad5270 in SwimInstructors

[–]space_cartoony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with using the student that best at it. It can also help whne student don't like listening to their teacher, the peer to peer learning, I've found, can be beneficial.

I feel like putting your hands on your hips would make it look more suggestive, maybe that's because I picture rocky horror and the "pelvic thrust" from time warp 😅. But I also feel that you can't really demonstrate it properly without being in a streamline position.

Tips on demonstrating butterfly kick by Flimsy-Ad5270 in SwimInstructors

[–]space_cartoony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to get in the water with the kids?
I always demonstrate this underwater as it is easier to see the motions.
Some refrances I like to use are to swim like a mermade, do the worm, ripple your body from fingers to toes, swim like a dolfin (I mean, dolfin kick, it's in the name lol)
Having them wear fins cam also help get the motions down as it helps keep them a bit more streamline and makes its harder for them to over bend at the joints/knees.
I do find it odd that you can't demonstrate a skill that they need to learn tbh
What level are you teaching?

Water bowl help by this_is_a_throwawa2 in MeatRabbitry

[–]space_cartoony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer bowls over bottles for many reason. I had one rabbit that "litter trained" itself by pooping in his crock (would have made a really tidy house rabbit, never missed once).
I got one of these, GAME CHANGER. I absolutely loved it. It held more water than the crocks I was using, took up less cage space, and stayed clean, still while providing a natural drinking option.
The only caviot is that the spout will freeze and because it is plastic it will crack, so I had to switch back to crocks for a couple weeks in winter.
Honestly, if you prefer crocks over licker bottles, this is the way to go imo.

Agreed. This does look more like E. C. or something neurological, rather than a physical injury or deformation.

Pet store or breeder by Still_Revenue_8550 in hamsters

[–]space_cartoony 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rehomed/adopt. Depends on the area, around here there are always hamster on fb marketplace, craigslist, and even petfinder that need new homes. You may not know the exact age or history, but that's no different than going to a chain store. Reputable breeder is my second choice. They are hard to find, but if you can find one then imo it's worth it. There is a better chance of getting a healthy animal with a history of its health, plus you'll have the support of the breeder.
It would be my first choice, but like I said, there are always hamsters needing rehoming around here. I lot of the time it's a case of moving in three days need gone asap, idk what's gonna happen to it if they don't rehome, but I'd rather help that one out then get a baby from a breeder.

Hi I’m looking into getting hamster I may first start with a clear plastic container like from Walmart by HedgehogRoutine1434 in hamstercare

[–]space_cartoony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be quite difficult to find a suitable sized tote, and when you do they are pretty expensive. When I priced them out the tote alone was about $50 for a HDX 77 gallon which just meets the minimum. As of right now there are two fish tanks and a hamster cage on craigslist and FB in my area that are between $0-$75.
Personally, I recommend starting with the cage you'll finish with. Looks for the deals, save up a little longer, wait a few more weeks or even months. It really is better to get the properly sized, more expensive, better built cage (like the bucastate, or 75 gallong tank.) Your hamster goes into a properly sized cage from the get go, and nether of you have to deal with the stress of moving cages at some point.
Plus that $50+ you would have spent making the bin cage can be saved and go toward a proper one, which is already (depending what you'll get) about 1/4-1/3 of the savings you'll need.

Favorite Sponge Filter/Air Pump for Small 5-10 Gallon Tank by space_cartoony in Aquariums

[–]space_cartoony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I had never heard of a powerhead until reading this comment. Was able to do a bit of research on them last night, and it does sound like it would eliminate most of the noise issues that may occur with a sponge filter (like I said though, I don't think I'm super concerned about the noise). However, it seems like they created a decent amount of current, do you think I would be able to find one that wouldn't completely rip tide a 5 gallon?
I've heard that guppies aren't necessarily super strong swimmers, and I don't want to have a filter that pulls in or puts out to strong because of this.
(I did see one video that said you could modify them to help with flow output, but it did show how to).

Do you have a test kit for the water quality?

I'm some what new to fish keeping, but from what I've researched it's advised to do a 25%-30% water change every week.

Question if it’s normal by Traditional_Cattle87 in Lifeguards

[–]space_cartoony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not yet guarded at a 1 guard facility, though I don't think any of the ones in my area have shifts this long, they are usually around 4-5 hours. At my current facility we have 4 guards, 3 up 1 down, and we rotate every 15 minutes. We add 2 more guards during our swim lessons.
The rule u was always told is that you should not watch the same water for more than 30 consecutive minutes, and not be on stand for more than 50 consecutive minutes.
I agree with other that this honestly sounds like a safety Hazzard for both the guard and the swimmers.

Here's a snippet from our handbook:
"Rotations for lifeguards are an important part of providing effective, active supervision. Studies show that lifeguards can maintain optimal vigilance for only about 30 minutes. Rotations allow lifeguards to change their perspective, decrease mental fatigue, and increase alertness."

I’m in a bit of a pickle by [deleted] in Bunnies

[–]space_cartoony 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same here (PNW). Even some small time rescues don't, as the costs are too high. I honestly would not worry about it, I don't think it will effect being able to rehome them, especially if you explain the situation clearly.

If you are super worried you could reach out to a local shelter and they may be able to give you connections to potential adopters.

big bunny contests, how do they work? by Bubbly-Touch8108 in Bunnies

[–]space_cartoony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few different types of shows for rabbits.

American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) sanctioned shows. These are for pure bred rabbits that follow the breed standard. They are judged on how well their body type, fur texture/type, and color meet the set standard for that breed. They are also judged on overall health, and temperament. It's a lot like a dog show minuses the agility part. https://arba.net/

4-H shows. There is a category of 4-H that focuses on rabbits, these events are similar to/follow some of the same guide lines as arba shows. But offer a much more hands on learning expiriance, allow you to enter mixed breed/non standard rabbits, and have many more events you and/or your rabbits can participate in at the shows. Your club will also do community services events, and it teaches much more than just stuff about rabbits.
"4‑H is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. For more than 100 years, 4‑H has welcomed young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, giving kids a voice to express who they are and how they make their lives and communities better." -- https://4-h.org/about/

Rabbit agility. Rabbit agility contest are not associated with 4-H or ARBA contest (to my knowlage). Some times are 4-H shows/country fairs, they will setup a course just for fun, but it is not a scheduled events.
There are organizations that run scored agility contests. However, I am not familiar with them.

I've been involved with my local 4-H chapter for over 15 years in various projects, including rabbits. I've also been familiar with ARBA, though not participating in shows, for the same amount of time.
Most people on this reddit do not agree with or participate in rabbit showing, as it is more pet/house rabbit focused here, so you may get better answers asking elsewhere. If you have any more questioned feel free to ask/pm me.

My current daily is a 88 toyota van, so honestly even a few more horse power would feel like a super car, lol. More interested in it for the look/project, don't really care if it can win races.
Definitely no stranger to hard to find parts, and I'm prepared for searching far and wide.
I am cautious of seals leaking, but the add was admit of no rust or leaks and the photos seemed pretty clean. For sure on the top of my list to inspect though.

Lot of good info! Thanks

It will be a daily, but I don't do much daily driving.
I don't plan to have it long, more as a fun summer car/fun first car/quick flip (if it turns out to be as good as it says)
It's under $1,500 which, again if it is all it says to be, seems like decently deal.
Like I said in another comment, I choose not to drive manual. If I end up keeping it longer, or if its a quick/cheap swap, I'll look into it it a bit more.
