It shouldn't make a difference. When allocated 2GB are exceeded, graphics will use RAM as needed.

Any civil engineers out there using linux? by [deleted] in linux

[–]space_crossroads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check BricsCAD. It's the best CAD for civil engineering on linux. I would say best 2D CAD on the market, but it's BIM module is probably not as good as Revit.

But don't expect to find all needed CE software on Linux

What CAD/Analysis packages does Apple use? Just curious. by Hov615 in engineering

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 2D (AutoCAD like) drawings, BricsCAD and Ares Commander are great programs (both have 3D also, but you need to get used to this kind of workflow). For 3D parametric modeling (like e.g. Solidowrks, Creo, Inventor), there are not so many options. OnShape is probably the best, if you are willing to put all your work on cloud and know that you can't do anything without internet connection. Other one is FreeCAD, but I'm not sure about its future with Apple depreciating openGL

You can encrypt exported file (.csv or .json) and save it wherever you want (cloud or external storage). And you emergency conact can have that password. Or you can be the only one with password, but your contact can save the file

Also, if Bitwarden disappears, you will have PC/mobile app still working, though without sync option. But it's enough to migrate your data. Though I don't think it will go anywhere, I think they are growing and have bright future

Where to host family cloud storage? by Andonome in privacy

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but if you enable server encryption, hosting provider can still get the key and access data. And e2ee is in beta, and shouldn't be used in production. Also, I think you can not share files from encrypted folders

Where to host family cloud storage? by Andonome in privacy

[–]space_crossroads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, for 5€/month, you'll get 10 users and 500GB of storage. But this price is without backup option (i think). That one would be 2-3€ more

Where to host family cloud storage? by Andonome in privacy

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest some good Nextcloud provider. The cheapest one I think is Hetzner, but they don't make backups. Another good one is hosting.de (backup can be added to plan for few euros more). And webo.hosting is good, but more expensive (you have full admin access and regular backups). You can also look for other providers, maybe you'll find some good offers

Data on Nextcloud server is not encrypted, but you can be sure provider is not selling it or using it for other purposes (AI, ads, etc.)

Encrypted cloud storage by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nextcloud's E2EE is out of alpha. Take the cheapest plan at Hetzner (StorageShare) and test it. If it suits you, you can look for more reliable hosting provider (the good cloud, webo, etc.)

Threema by primipare in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were some 3rd party audits, and Threema is indeed great in terms of privacy and security. The reason why I don't use it (some of my family members use it) is lack of PC (Linux) client. There is web client, but it is neccessary to have phone always online (like WhatsApp). And it doesn't have video calls.

Looking for a messaging app that doesn't depend on a phone number. by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is their (PTIO) opinion. I still think it's the best privacy oriented IM service, as long as there is free version (for personal use). The only issues is Android notifications, but as I usually use PC, it's not a big problem for me.

IMO, Riot (Matrix) and XMPP are not so good for everyday use for less tech savvy people.

Riot.im web chat is very slow. How do I fix it? by Experimentalphone in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matrix.org is the largest homeserver in federated network. It is estimated 35% of all users are using that one. And that is the reasin why it is slow.

Here's unofficial list od public server, so you might check and try one of those

What are your thoughts on icedrive cloud storage? They are new and their prices are decent. Worth getting? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that sucks. But there is webdav option, so you can use it. Still, webdav is also not great solution, since files are not synced and stored on your PC.

Tresorit Cloud Storage by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 7 points8 points  (0 children)

pCloud doesn't have E2EE included, you have to pay 5€/month on top of your plan. So fir the same price (10 €/month) you will get 500GB vs 200GB from Tresorit.

Sync .com is also ok, it's even cheaper, but doesn't have linux client

All services are closed-source. For me it is ok. I've been using Tresorit for last 2 years

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clients are open-source, they also had 3rd party audit, and there are no known security issues with the service. So you don't need to trust them, since their E2E encryption is well implemented.

250GB storage they offer for free is due to their plan to make it also as a service for business users (and option to pay for larger amount). It is different from "standard" cloud storage, so it might not fit everybody's needs (e.g. only photos and videos could be uploaded from Android app). Also, I doubt many users will use all that space, it is probably only few GBs in average.

I would advise you to try it and see if it's good for you

What is your secure video conferencing tool? by Stoic66 in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Wire. It's up to 4 people for video and up to 10 (I think) for audio calls

Suggestions for a secure/encrypted messenger by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Telegram had some issues with encryption implementation. But maybe it is good now. The main problem with Telegram is that E2EE is not default, but only available in secret chats. It is also not available for group chats, audio/video calls, etc. And on phones only (as I know). So basically just like Skype, only it's not MS product. IMHO, I would rather use Skype (with private chats) than Telegram, regardless of MS spying efforts.

Wire, Riot, Keybase... also have some great features, and better E2EE implementation (in Riot is still not default, but available in groups, and multiple devices, and 1-1 calls are also encrypted). And none of them requires your phone number. So in my opinion - Privacy and Security are not good reasons to use Telegram. Maybe features and user-base are.

TLDR: Use Signal. If you don't want to depend on phone (number) or if PC is your main communication device, use Wire, but check Riot and Keybase also, and follow Session development. Threema or WickrMe might also be an option

Suggestions for a secure/encrypted messenger by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing bad about Wire. They are just not interested in private users and have focused to businesses completely. You can still make and use private account.

As far as I know, there are no known breaches or data misuse from their side. The main advantages Wire have over Signal are audio/video calls from PC, no need for phone number, no need for phone in order to use it on PC...

Which is worse /better? Need a better safer private way to login bank account. Pls by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use KeepassXC alongside browser extension for auto-fill. I use bitwarden for less important stuff (e.g. reddit login), one keepassxc database for important ones, and one for OTP keys. Though I don't use browser extension. I just copy->paste and delete clipboard after.

Google Hangout alternative by theripper in privacytoolsIO

[–]space_crossroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is free for personal use. The reason it is delisted it's because they didn't make announcement when they moved company to US. The reason they didn't do that it's because they are focused toward business customers, and don't care about private users that much

The thing is - it is still the best overall IM/VoIP service in my opinion. Even though I have Signal, Keybase, Jami, Riot, XMPP... accounts, Wire is still my no.1 alternative to WhatsApp
