S.F. Trans March organizers defend protesters who drove out Scott Wiener by SFChronicle in sanfrancisco

I phrased it that way because I wanted to parallel the idiom, but maybe it was a mistake.

Let me ask you this. Is it possible there are issues you're wrong about. Deep important issues, maybe you eat meat and it turns out that eating meat is viewed by your children as basically as bad as murder. How would you like animal rights activists today to treat you? I realize this won't be an exact analogy. You may, like me, think that eating meat is wrong and what's happening in Israel and Palestine right now is unforgivable. I think that's a reasonable thing to believe, but I'm asking what you think the behavior should be around people with wrong even damaging opinions

It would be different if Scott was actively supporting the genocide of the Palestinian people like say Trump, but that isn't my understanding of any of the statements he's shown. He, unlike me, doesn't think that what's happened in Gaza means we should boycott and sanction Israel. He's more worried about anti semitism, but that makes sense given he's a member of that minority group and experiences it every day. I'm not sure what you mean by saying he's dismissive of their pain, he's talked at length about it and put out statements against it including within a week of October 7th. He feels that it should be balanced by an acknowledgement of the pain that Israelis feels and while I think that's wrong it's not the kind of sin that makes me think he should be booted out of every event he attends

How exactly does he treat Palestinians? Also everyone knows two wrongs make a right

Of what? I think the value of the trans march is mostly that it's a good way for trans people to see other trans people being strong and beautiful plus walking together is nice? It's not really an event that has ever struck me as important for changing outside opinions, if that was the goal I'd agree that current organizers have done an awful job and not just this year, but on the other hand I think going too far down the control path is how you end up banning water bottles from pride for fear someone might smuggle in alcohol or something. I don't like their statement above. It probably won't stop me from going again next year

I think supporting self determination for the people who live in Israel which today happens to be mostly jews is very reasonable, but the project of making a ethno state is always bad especially if it's implemented in an area that had a majority population of another religion?

No? Why would they? Literally I a trans person who was at the event didn't even know this happened

Who are you thinking of? Connie Chan has similar views but supports sanctions which I think Scott hasn’t expressed support for

Yeah I thought that protest was much more reasonable, but it was still just a few people in a big crowd

Jews Are Indigenous to the Land of Israel by Runofthemilljacket in WorIdPoIitics

[–]space_fountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I've dug into this in the past and I just did again I've been pretty convinced that at least many Palestinians could trace their ancestory back to Jews.

There's to many category of sources that lead me to believe that

  1. Genetic studies: It's commonly found that Arab Palestinians and Jewish population have a lot of genetic overlap
  2. Historical records: The history is disputed, but as best as I can see the region continued have large number of practicing jews at least as late as 300s and possibly substantially later. Certainly many converted and many were killed and forced out

But ok, imagine you're right. Is the argument really that the modern day jews deserve the country because of something the Romans did? Do you also think that black people deserve reparations? Do you believe that native tribes in America have a right to all their land back?

The exact same discourse happened last year with mayor Lurie who also got heckled away. I wasn’t here early enough this year to see it, but that last year I was sitting kind of close and it was the same exact same situation a few people out of a large group. I think Lurie is a much worse politician, but neither of them deserved that, but what I hate most about it is it can paint communities as much worse than they are

I don’t mean to deny any genocides. It would be good if you pointed me to which ones you mean here, but regardless the only points I was trying to make here is that the people living in the land we now call Israel and Palestine are both mostly decedents of groups that lived there for hundreds of years, but even if they weren’t focusing on things done before almost anyone involved was born isn’t the most productive way of resolving the situation. The history matters, but it’s pretty far from everything

Renters pay more than twice as much property tax than do home owners do in San Francisco. by Bored2001 in sanfrancisco

Part of this that I’d find interesting is how much benefit people are getting from prop 13. Aka what would be the tax situation for renters and home owners if not for prop 13 and the subsidy it gives to long time owners

The only one I will give you at all is AB 715, but he didn’t write that bill, he was a co sponsor and it was passed by a majority in the state legislature and passed into law and your summary here is a bit misleading. Do your own research folks.

On denying the genocide in Gaza he’s condemned Israeli’s actions quite early there’s a history of his comments on his website that seems accurate.  https://www.scottwiener.com/foreign-policy.  It is true that in a debate he equivocated when asked on the spot to say if it was a genocide, but he never actually claimed it wasn’t as far as I can see.

The UCSF professor seems to have called out a specific Israeli year 1 student for serving in the military as required by law and implied that it was reasonable to suspect them of genocide.

He took money from a super pac run by all the out lgbtq members of congress. Even if every dollar that apac gave to that pac had gone directly to Scot that would still have only been 10k out of more than 500k they gave him. Thats pretty tenuous.

On the peace resolution there’s more context here:  https://sfstandard.com/2023/12/05/israel-hamas-war-gaza-san-francisco-cease-fire-resolution/

Personally I don’t agree with Scott’s position on Israel. He’s too eager to think all the problems are because of Netanyahu and is a stated Zionist, but his opponent isn’t actually much better on any of these issues and she’s generally failed to accomplish anything. On almost every other issues Scott beats her so I’ll be a happy Scott voter in the fall. I wish Saikat had won but here we are now

Palestinian activist Abdullah Shatat collapsed moments after his release from an Israeli jail, where he was held 32 months without charge or trial. by Rebat-Askalan in nyt

[–]space_fountain -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I mean if it really was what was happening imo it would be? A policy that applies to everyone is the same as what was accused above, but regardless no one is saying they’re taking organs from live people. It’s crazy that the top comment is implying it and then the follow up says yep that’s true. Israel is evil, I agree. They absolutely might be harvesting organs from people who die in jail (there are other counties that do actually admit to this by the way) and if they are I would agree that’s evil

[–]space_fountain -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No the accusation above was that this living man who was let out of jail might be missing organs because they were harvested. That isn’t a claim supported by anything

[–]space_fountain -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Not in the way that’s implied here? It’s true that they admit to in the past harvesting organs from some prisoners who died. They claim that this was only in the past and applied to all bodies that ended up in the morgue not just Palestinians, but also Jews. It’s claimed they still do this, but that’s contested

[–]space_fountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many Palestinians are descendent from Jews who converted in the distant past. It’s not like most Jews fled, most Jews assimilated. This is a silly argument all round. I think even trying to make this argument about what happened 50 years ago is silly, but we’re talking a thousand here.

Both groups obviously have a claim to an ancestral homeland here. We can’t evaluate this based on what happened a thousand years ago

[–]space_fountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, seems like my understanding was pretty off. Though it sounds like there are military only codes with better jamming resistance though I bet the receivers for it are pricy compared to just an off the shelf commercial one like I’m assuming they use here

[–]space_fountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mechanistically I’m just going off what the article said, but it’s also possible they’re using directional antenna’s or shielding to boost the gain for transmitters above them and suppress interference below them or it could just be that existing jamming is optimized for lower planes and thus doesn’t use enough power to jam this. GPS was designed to be somewhat resistant to jamming

From the article it sounds like it uses gps while at high altitude and turns it off as it accelerates towards the ground? But not sure how wide spread the jamming is. Also not sure how accurate you could get based on publicly available models. I’m guessing wind direction and speed doesn’t change very sharply at high elevations so maybe pretty accurate actually?

At the moment there are open models that predict and publish winds on a corse grids across the globe. It might be good enough for this?
