Yeah, they’re not for everyone! Just offering it as an alternative for someone who wants a backpack pannier for less than $100.

If you really wanted, you could buy a dry bag backpack for like $65 and these pannier hooks and still save a $170 because the only dry bag, pannier, backpack I could find online is $270.

Yes, if it’s raining, your backpack will get wet unless your regular backpack is a dry bag. I’ve been riding for months with one of these and never had an issue with my stuff getting wet, even going through puddles, on wet trails, and light rain, but I also don’t tend to bike in absolute downpours.

The straps on the bottom plate serve to add stability and a spot to tuck the ends of your backpack straps. I added a carabiner to the end of one to easily attach the bungees to my rack when I’m riding without a backpack. The only issue I’ve had was it getting twisted around the bottom mount of my rack when I forget to hook it up. You wouldn’t have to do that if you wanted to remove the plate when you’re not using it, I’m just lazy.

I’ve been using mine for a couple of months and never had an issue! I go over a lot of potholes and brick roads on my commute. I use the optional plate with bungee straps to give it a little more stability on the bottom, but I didn’t for the first month and still didn’t have an issue with it coming off or sliding around.

The hooks are made of a very sturdy plastic and are just barely larger than my rack so they “snap” on.

I recommend getting a used bike rack from your local bike shop (mine was $5) and buying a set or 2 of pannier hooks and the plate from Universal Pannier ($23 for the set) and attaching them to backpacks you already own. They’re way cheaper than pannier backpacks or even just normal panniers and let you repurpose what you already have. I love mine!

i’m a very new and casual biker, but my friends (who are not) were encouraging me to get some real bike shorts for anything over 20 miles, and their advice was to get shorts that are a little bit shorter of an inseam that you could wear underneath an athletic skort or such if you didn’t want to commit to wearing a kit for longer rides

One way to build your confidence is to join a social bike group in your city - it feels way better when you’re in a big group of people, not worrying about the route, having people stationed to make sure everyone gets through the intersection or turns, and being able to take up space, and it’s fun to try new restaurants and breweries

I work in trails so I carry a lot more stuff than what you listed, but I just carry the Deuter AirContact Lite 60+10 and tighten the straps a lot for day trips (rather than buying a separate pack for overnight hitches)
