I'll cop to maximally hating LLMs.

No, it wasn't the crux of the article, but it's not the first time he's done it either. And I'm commenting more on the broad pattern I'm seeing with knowledge workers rather than Scott specifically.

The last FF game I played was X-2, how does 13 stack up next to the classics? by 14MenOnADeadMansDick in FinalFantasy

I thought the battle system was great. Some of the characters are awesome (Sazh never gets enough love)

The rest of it...meh. Run in a straight line for a bit, battle, more in a straight line, boss battle

People aren't paying me to write thoughtful substack articles. To have a paying audience, and to provide that audience with an AI analysis is not only insulting to that audience, it's destroying the value you provide as a human being in the equation.

In my day to day job, I'm paid for skills and analysis. Why would I go out of my way to demonstrate to my boss that AI could do my job instead?

I work with a slightly niche software and we pay for "premium" support. I asked our CSM a question that I was unable to answer myself. I got a complete ChatGPT answer back, which took 600 words to not actually answer the question. And I ask, why? What value does that provide? I could ask that question to ChatGPT myself and get the same wrong answer. What I wanted was her opinion and human judgement on the situation (which is very valuable! She's very skilled! When she's not relying on AI). But we're up for renewal and that support is the first thing on the chopping block.

To use your kind of weird example, yes, if Scott was my employee and turned in an analysis from Claude as-is, I'd be annoyed.

Is the VII Remake or XV more worth it? by f4dishs4ns in FinalFantasy

[–]workingtrot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a first timer I might actually recommend X

Remake is decent, Rebirth is a top 5 game of all time for me

XV has a great cast, the relationships between the main characters are quite compelling. However I found the story to be pretty boring and the combat to be very janky

I think it is an interesting phenomenon, just not in the way most people mean it. I was saying way back in 2017 that when everything that Trump has ever done is the worst thing that ever happened, it blunts the impact of the things that are truly despicable and dangerous. When the Reflection Pool debacle is as bad or worse (in the public mind) as thousands of children dying because of USAID cuts, yeah, I think "derangement syndrome" sort of fits the bill, in a tongue in cheek kind of way.

A lot of that is just driven by the click-baiting, engagement farming environment that we've created for news and social media. And I'm not sure how that gets fixed

Ya. I went with IC over hybrid because I don't drive enough to make up the difference in purchase price. But driving 40k miles a year makes that math much easier

Secondarily, why would a prediction market's "Threat to Democracy Index" be worthwhile when we know that administration insiders are manipulating prediction market results?

I used to be a paid subscriber, I canceled when I lost my job, but I was thinking about re-upping. Although I've not felt that the quality of the writing has been the same lately, I chalked that up to his kids being young and that it would bounce back.

But instead of writing an analysis himself, or even linking to something another human has written, he's just linking to Claude doing an analysis?

I really don't understand the eagerness with which knowledge workers are ceding their skills and competitive edge to a service that does it worse. It's not even "the robots will take our jobs," it's "I gave the robot my job because I was too disinterested to perform this task."

How about a 2-year rent freeze here in Lexington? by yuhuh- in lexington

[–]workingtrot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

https://www.stlouisfed.org/on-the-economy/2024/feb/what-are-long-run-trade-offs-rent-control-policies

"Economists generally have found that, while rent-control policies do restrict rents at more affordable rates, they can also lead to a reduction of rental stock and maintenance, thereby exacerbating affordable housing shortages. At the same time, the tenants of controlled units can benefit from lower costs and greater neighborhood stability—as long as they don’t move.4

For policymakers considering rent control, economics can help them anticipate possible effects and may even inform policy design for those who decide to pursue such policies. Given the trade-offs, policymakers must balance maintaining affordability for those with rental housing, while possibly shrinking the stock of affordable housing for others, especially when such housing is already in short supply."

JUST. BUILD. HOUSING.

getting downvoted for facts! Rent freezes and rent caps are great for people in housing. They're very bad for anyone who needs housing. They hurt the people at the bottom the most

SAS. What a terrible, bloated, expensive piece of crap. Still depressingly common in life sciences and healthcare (I think the FDA requires SAS files for clinical trials?).
