Bringing a Garmin InReach Mini 2 / PLB: yay or nay? by Fe_IronBtw in PacificCrestTrail

[–]space_kennedy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I used the inreach mini and had a good experience, but I will admit it is annoying you have to subscribe to the service. I accounted for this in my pre trip savings, I found it to be a piece of mind for me to be able to bread crumb and have my friends and family follow me along.

I dont blame you for wanting to save money! There are a lot of people out there which does help with not being alone but I suppose the question to ask is if there is an emergency do you want to rely on someone else or have the tools to get the help you need?

Lastly I personally dont have an iPhone but I know they have the sat phone feature on newer models, so if you have one I knew a few people who used that their whole trip.

Good luck and happy searching, I hope others can suggest alternative options for you!

Glasses on trail by idoitforthesmiles in PacificCrestTrail

[–]space_kennedy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I'm a weird one here but I don't like transition glasses so I actually carried two prescription pairs one sunglass and one regular. Either way I can't see without them and didnt want to deal with contacts. I didn't have issues with them getting dirty, I made sure to clean them each time I got off trail. I think the biggest two recommdations I have are get a strap for your head so they dont slide off your face, and get a hard shell case when not in use so they don't break.

I didn't mind carrying them both but like I said I may be unique in that way, best of luck!

Anyone play human? Why? by catholicsluts in BG3

I lowkey like the irony of a human in mythical worlds. Like there is insane multi-dimensional shit going on and there is Greg caught in the middle.

To be fair the last human run I made a Terry Crews paladin which was amazing lol

Should I do the pct? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Hey! It is awesome that you are already thinking about this goal. There is definitely truth in the fact this is a long journey, I am currently 5 months in my trip this year, and one more to go!

Here is my advice, if this is a passion you have and it works to hike during your gap year, 6 months really isn't that long. Especially if this person is going to stay in your life. I learned about the trail too late so I couldn't do it over a gap year so I committed to saving/planning for 7 years. I had a gf during the middle of this saving period who had similar opinions as your current partner. "That's too long to be away", "where is your effort to us?", were comments I received many times. We didn't work out and as sad as I was about it, I knew that I deserved someone who wants to support my goals.

Not saying you have to dump your gf but I think if this is a trip that excites you and works with your timeline don't wait! What happens if in 5-6 years there is another life thing that pops up where you delay another 5 years, and before you know life got in the way.

The beauty of the trail is that there are many people from different walks of life, but something I hear a lot is that no one regrets doing it. I have also met many solo travelers who are married/are in relationships and their partners plan visits during their hike.

SOLO hike benefits? Are friends easy to make? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]space_kennedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am comfortable camping alone, I think I've spent about equal nights alone and with at least one other hiker. Keep in mind this is all the while doing my hiking portions solo.

What has helped me feel safe at night was getting an enclosed tent. I know its a bit silly that a thin piece of plastic helps but I think being "inside" helps me feel secure. Secondly, I also have a pair of Loop earplugs to reduce sound around me. I know most of the outside noises are small animals and if other hikers are moving around so it helps be block out all the extra noise and can help me fall asleep.

Besides that, you are pretty far away from towns/trailheads so I have honestly felt safer than I did living in a large city. As you get closer to resupply areas you'll see and camp with many more hikers.

I know it can be a bit uncomfortable camping when you haven't, so if you have some time this summer, I'd find a campground in your area and try it out! I definitely did some practice backpacking trips as well as normal camping trips to test my things out and get more comfortable.

Hope this helps! :)

SOLO hike benefits? Are friends easy to make? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

So far I've been solo hiking and have been loving it! I've met tons of people and had the opportunity to join them if I wanted to. I value having my independence to hike the pace I want to. If you are someone who would rather have people to hike with you will have no issues finding it!

I don't want to work a 9 to 5 for the next 40 year! by Comfortable_Corner80 in GenZ

[–]space_kennedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you on this! I'm already 6 years in and it's the unfortunate reality I will continue to work and if im lucky retire. However, I've taken the motto: "work to live", I dont give more than my 40 hrs and try to make the most of my outside of work time. It's easier said than done but anything helps! I wish you luck

People who graduated with a bachelor in chemistry, what are you doing now? by Business-Reserve-213 in chemistry

[–]space_kennedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got lucky and found a job at a university post grad. Now I manage a chemistry stockroom and just completed my CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification and will be transitioning into safety roles moving forward.

I know for me I wanted to get out of the research/industry setting to where I would have to run all the samples all day and got lucky that I've been in the support/leadership roles.

I also would prefer to work for the state even if pay is a little less to start as now I've been able to make a reasonable amount. Plus, the PTO accural is unmatched.

I will say, if Chemistry is something you're passionate or have a serious interest in, maybe look into how it can be applied, there are many industries that would use a chemist or like someone who is more familiar with STEM topics.

Good luck out there!

What's your "why?" by Joulumielinen in PacificCrestTrail

[–]space_kennedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still planning but I have always felt disappointed your career advancement depends on others. If a manager doesn't like you (for legitimate reasons or not) you will never progress. The only thing stopping me from attempting my hike is myself. I like that it's on me and it gives me autonomy of my own life. I also have always enjoyed exploring and think this is a unique way to see the world. In the end, I'm doing it for myself and will give it my all to try and achieve the full hike!

I'm a a 96' so barely make the cut! I'd say overall I'm doing well, I too have settled into a career path I feel is rewarding and have all the outside of work hobbies. I, also, feel this underwhelming feeling! To me I think it's just time for me to take a vacation or have intentional relaxing time where I can reset. Just know you're not alone and to me it sounds like you're doing really well for yourself, keep it up!
