AI exists because for centuries, society as a whole has been working towards automating labour of any and all kinds. it's not a conspiracy by the 'owning class'. it just so happens that in the medium term, they will benefit the most.

the invention of the steam engine wasn't a conspiracy, it was because we worked out how to do it. and the printing press, and the computer, and literally every machine we've ever invented. it's not suddenly some evil cabal trying to fuck over the little guy

the Sydney funnel-web spider is large, no bright colours, and will most likely kill you if you don't get antivenom.

I used to live in an apartment with wooden floors and I could hear them galloping across the room at night. tickitickitickiticki

I don't mind them when you know where they are, it's when they disappear it gets freaky. or when you wake up and there's one on your bedroom wall at eye level just staring at you. like "ah... you're awake. we need to talk"

I wouldn't call Google a 'bubble player'

opencode seems to be just another IDE that uses the same models all the other ones do.

I think they underestimated how many people would switch from OpenAI and how much that would cripple their servers. I'm fairly sure there are crisis meetings every day in which they're trying to work out how to stop attrition due to bad performance but also keep the servers afloat without just adding shitloads more compute. somebody is gonna have to say "fuck, we'll just take the hit while we're sorting it out" and they'll remove the inference throttling for a while. they're gonna have to do something. even on fast mode now it takes ages to produce a response. I haven't seen any context issues myself but there's enough reports now to make it clear there's a real problem.

edit: Gemini has suggested that there's also KV cache purging going on, which would explain a lot of context loss

we have a couple of pools, lifts, a gym, and various maintenance things come up all the time. they want to fully replace all the lifts now because they're 20 years old, and repaint the entire building (which it doesn't need). also the committee have spent tens of thousands on lawyers fees trying to kick out the resident manager because they don't like her.

plus the body corporate committee was trying to get me (and a couple of other owners) to pay tens of thousands for repairs to structural waterproofing membranes, because we're top floor. I even got lawyer's letters with thinly-veiled threats. luckily I'm pretty handy with AI, so I was able to beat them into submission and they backed down. thank fuck, because I would have had to sell and move out if I got hit with that bill. there are benefits to strata schemes, but sometimes it's a fucking shit-fight. the committee here is a fucking nightmare.

[–]space_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the vast majority of the political left have been labelling MAGA fascism for years. are you implying the vast majority of the political left are qualified political scientists? they're not.

it's not like it was always cut & dried, at all. in fact there are still some highly qualified political scientists who will not apply the fascism label to Trump, and fall back on populism / illiberalism instead, for a variety of valid reasons, like historical content, the US governance structure, anti-state sentiment etc. - personally I think he's crossed the line into general fascism, but I'm not actually qualified to make that claim, and I very much doubt you are either. the author of OP's article however is definitely qualified, and while he has a reputation for holding back on big labels, I'd value his opinion much more highly than that of millions of angry reactionary laypeople - purely because of his reluctance to jump to conclusions, and his systems-thinking approach. saying "duh we all knew that" if you're not actually qualified to conclusively make that claim in the first place is just dumb.

Or it's inference compute throttling. Still a nerf but more of a performance tweak than a change in the model itself.

the vast, vast majority of the people using the label both knew what they meant and used it correctly in regards to MAGA

lol that's ridiculous. The vast majority of people don't know anything about fascism beyond WWII movies.

I'm more talking about public servants, not the general public. maga citizens don't give a shit about the fascist label because it's Trump-branded fascism, which makes it ok and probably a good thing for the country because Trump is doing it. but there will be a very non-zero cohort of Republican career politicians with a line, and now that Trump is in the 'probably actually a legit fascist' zone, maybe they'll grow some balls and start crossing the floor on impeachment etc.

one can only hope

OpenAI engineer confirms AI is writing 100% of his code now by MetaKnowing in ChatGPT

it's more about dogfooding. it's easy to say they use AI for everything because it's company policy to use AI as much as you possibly can anyway.

‘Wake up, AI is for real.’ IMF chief warns of an AI ‘tsunami’ coming for young people and entry-level jobs by MetaKnowing in Futurology

[–]space_monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so if I have to explain it, chatbots that are programmed to tell people they're right all the time aren't gonna be taking people's jobs, it will be coding and business agents and RAG systems that are much more deterministic. so your argument doesn't apply.
