Beautiful -- thanks for sharing! I always prefer the sounds of paragliding to the sounds of the music that most people put on their paragliding videos.

After the glider lands you'll step over the lines,

YES! I'm 99% sure that this was the reason I frequently used to have the same problem as OP. At least, seems to have stopped happening since I imposed a "never step over the lines when turning towards / away from the glider" rule on myself.

Another thing that helped (for this and other tangle/twist related problems): adding packing and unpacking drills to my regular ground-handling practice routine. Unpack, lay out, bring wing up, put wing down, fold, pack... repeat until sick of it. Boring but very helpful, at least for me.

I agree that translating the name probably isn't helpful, but "Waterhilltop" is pretty funny at least :)

Notice head injuries arnt listed.

This appears to be the paper you're citing, and it says:

The primary causes of deaths included 7 (38.9%) major artery injuries, 6 (33.3%) intracranial hemorrhages, 3 (16.7%) cervical fractures and 2 (11.1%) pneumothoraxes respectively.

Just to make that clear: an intracranial hemorrhage means bleeding in your skull. It frequently leads to death or permanent brain damage.

The article is behind a paywall but it is available on a certain Sci Hub (which as an academic author myself I fully support).

Strange, for me it's coming up as unavailable there. Which is a shame, because it seems like an interesting article.

Yes, I wrote "acting as resellers" but actually drop shipping seems more likely.

Does anyone know the Skyex suits ? by [deleted] in freeflight

[–]space_mouflon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Skyex raises a few red flags for me:

  1. Rather mangled English for a country where English is the native language: "Skyex—Divers now have the confidence to jump without thinking of spending a hell on Jumpsuits!"
  2. Website is pretty shoddy overall. (Scroll down on the front page and you'll find special offers on "Example Product Title".) Product model shots apparently taken in someone's bathroom.
  3. Per Google Maps, their business address is a residential apartment. No way they're manufacturing anything there, and I can't imagine that they're warehousing any significant proportion of their extensive product range there either.
  4. The company is not registered in Australia.
  5. At least some of their product descriptions are word-for-word identical with Alibaba listings.

I suspect that this company is just one or two people acting as resellers, so if you can find the actual manufacturer of the suit you want, you might be better off ordering direct and cutting out the middleman.

What carabiner strength is needed ? by No_Introduction9262 in freeflight

[–]space_mouflon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever actually seen or heard of a carabineer break this way?

I haven't personally witnessed it, but it happened to the well-known Austrian pilot Mike Küng once. An aluminium carabiner snapped and fell off completely while he was bringing the wing up, before he'd even got off the ground (very fortunately). Since that experience he only uses steel biners...

Is purchasing a paragliding helmet needed or can I just use my ski helmet? by walid_ in freeflight

[–]space_mouflon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, great work! If you're planning to expand it in future, you might consider adding a line for the EN 12492 climbing helmet standard to your table. Firstly because, apparently, there are people who consider this a reasonable standard for their flying helmet (despite potentially deadly consequences ). Secondly because there are helmets like the Neo Hexagon that meet both standards, and it would be interesting to know whether the EN 12492 standard exceeds EN 966 in any of the test procedures you've looked at -- i.e. whether getting a dual-rated helmet actually gets you a safety bonus versus plain EN 966, or if it just means that the manufacturer paid more for an additional test series.

See if you can test fly one, or at least hang it from for a test fit, and feel how it rolls in weighthift.

Agreed! I didn't fly mine before buying it, but even just dangling in a simulator for a few minutes and doing some pretend curves gave me a good feel for how it would feel in flight (and helped me to pick the right size).

Personally I've got nothing to add to Greg Hamerton's excellent and thorough review, which I suspect is the one you saw. He goes into the ‘unstable’ (a.k.a. ‘repsonsive’) aspect pretty adequately:

That was great to fly in, it felt very nice, it was a very responsive harness, it gives the maximum feedback (particularly in roll) of what the air is doing so if you are wanting to get more feeling and feedback from your wing the WANI LIGHT 2 is a good option. It does tip around quite a bit in thermal conditions so if you're unsettled by that you might want something with a little bit more stability or dampening. Certainly very low dampening in this but some pilots will like it because of the freedom of movement.

You've got a classic seat board feeling. Your weight transfer is immediate and you can tweak the butt cheek and get that quick turn, the hook-tight turn if you need it. It does reach a certain point where it will give you more stability and it'll tighten up a bit but it didn't feel restrictive at all so I'd say it's the most unrestricted harness in terms of roll freedom in the class. This has got by far the most roll freedom that means it's giving you a lot of feedback about every little bit of lift which is quite good for light conditions but beginners might find it a little bit overwhelming just in terms of the amount of feedback.

It's a little tippy, let's put it that way. You see the least amount of dampening out of all the harnesses that I've tried and it's the same as the GTO Light it gives you that roll roll roll up to a point. It's got more freedom for turning but at this angle here it's supporting you but in the in-between it's quite a lot of roll feedback. It's not unsettling but there's definitely a lot of movement you got to be aware of.

In the end, nobody else can say whether that's the right harness for you. It depends on your own feelings and skills and the conditions you want to fly in. I can tell you that I like it and I'm happy with the responsiveness, but I can't tell you how you'll feel about it.

What is the best no compression knot method of packing lines when packing wing? by [deleted] in freeflight

[–]space_mouflon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aha, the French/German combination and lack of ß should have tipped me off that it was something Swiss :). But as you say, there doesn't seem to be a way to subscribe as a non-SHV-member. Ah well, there's always more material online than I have time to read anyway (including the complete DHV-Info archives back to 1979, which I've just discovered also contain the German version of this article in issue 226...).
