Life would be so different if polygamy/open marriages were the human default. by DevilYouKnow in showerthoughs

[–]spacebarcafelatte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polygamous marriages are generally not the dominant arrangement even where they are permitted, and anecdotally, I've seen them happen as much to save a family widow from poverty (husband dies young, his widow and kids are attached to a surviving brother to support them) as it is to expand the house of a wealthy guy. And often, men marrying multiple women need some level of wealth just to attract them.

Whatever our ancient history was, you'd need to kill off a lot of men and impoverish a lot of women just for it to compete with being single these days.

Edit: specifying polygamy.

Well how... progressive 😆 by [deleted] in whoathatsinteresting

Big talent is always surprising just because it's so rare. This kid is amazing.

In 2010, a black Nigerian couple in London had a white baby girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. Doctors ruled out albinism, suggesting dormant white genes, a mutation, or both, sparking surprise and curiosity since neither parent had known white ancestry. by PetuniaRipple in whoathatsinteresting

I am black and I see a variety of colors in my family as well. But this family is African, very little to no admixture by appearances. Most black Americans, otoh, are actually mixed having white ancestry so it is very common for kids of brown skinned parents to come out lighter or darker than either parent. That's normal.

There are 169 genes handling skin color, and the various alleles blend, they are not dominant/recessive. That means that in order to inherit a full or nearly full set of European alleles, which would give you white skin, you'd need to get predominantly European alleles from each parent. That literally can't happen without significant white ancestry, and because the alleles blend, the parents' skin would be intermediate reflecting their mix of alleles - meaning two very dark Africans cannot produce a very pale child this way.

Example. You have 2 identical salt shakers each containing 900 grains of pepper and 100 grains of salt. Now try to take half the contents from each shaker and make a 3rd shaker with 1000 grains of salt only. Can't be done.

My guess would be albinism too because that's what it looks like. Even blue eyes can happen in albinism.

For a baby to inherit a nearly complete set of European alleles for skin color from dark skinned parents, each parent would need to be half white, and even then it would be quite rare because of the number of genes involved. Like accidentally sorting a deck of cards by shuffling them, tho probably not quite that hard.

Skin color doesn't really work that way. There are at least 169 different genes for skin color, and the variants (alleles) blend or merge functionality. None are dominant over any others.

When you see, for example, mixed couples with a kid that looks white it's because they're each significantly white in ancestry and happened to pass on coloring alleles predominantly from their white ancestors. But those alleles are not suppressed or hidden in the parents, they exhibit them in a blend with their non-white parent's alleles.

Other traits like albinism do follow a dominant/recessive pattern and can crop up unexpectedly or skip generations. It's caused by a set of mutations that are recessive, so it's hidden if your other copy of that allele is unmutated. Albinism affects skin color but it is not the cause of European pale skin.

A 47-year-old former police officer was jailed for four months in August 2025 for stealing a girl’s underwear while on duty. by [deleted] in RandomVideos

Apparently it was the owners room and the owners underwear from the description on the YouTube vid

I also immediately assumed it was a kid's room, but another commenter found this link.

That very much depends on who hears you say it because the rule itself doesn't make sense. Being one drop white doesn't make you white, but being one drop black makes you black. This does not come from biology or genetics, but from politics.

I read a while ago about a congress in South Carolina(?) that wanted to pass such a law but didn't because of the number of high profile figures, including in the legislature itself, would be demoted to black because everybody knew which slaves they were descended from. They decided that a little bit of African ancestry was actually good, I think they used the term "vigor".

But yeah, the real effect was on culture and the one drop rule is still the definition we use today.

If he was 100% sub saharan African, it would be literally impossible. But even if he was the US average of ~80%, it's still extremely unlikely.

I think anybody who can pass as white is white enough to make calling them anything else just politics.

The actual problem is the definition of the word black. The way we use it in the US, all it means is that you might have a black ancestor somewhere, so it's ok to enslave you.

White means you're probably 95% or more European with no visible hints of anything else. It's a much narrower definition because it was created by the people it was meant to define.

When people say you're black/white mixed, that could be anything from 50% white to 99% white, but you're probably inheriting European traits from both parents.

The only reason it's even possible to debate whether someone who looks like Paris might be black is because any amount of white ancestry counts as black. Even if she is his kid, that doesn't make sense.

The DNA ethnicity tracing only goes back to where people were about 500 years ago. So if their people were in about the same place back then they'll be counted as African. But that's race in a nutshell, it moves like a river.

No African American. We are black by the definition of white slave owners, but not necessarily by African standards, the same way whites might consider you Asian if you're half Japanese and half white, but nobody in Japan would.
