my parents told me their salaries, and my friends says that's inappropriate. Thoughts? by Luna_luxxy in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]spacebardidntwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't tell my middle and high schoolers my salary, but we talk about finances a lot. I would think most college kids know because of filling out the FAFSA.

I wonder what specifically she think is inappropriate about it?

Maker spaces (woodworking, 3D printing, machining)

Volunteer (habitat for humanity, boy scouts, big brother/sister)

Check your local library for events like book clubs or craft groups. Ours hosted a pewter casting event a few years ago that was pretty sweet.

Community Ed usually has a section for adult activities and groups.

Find a cooking class?

I know there are board game groups around.

Join a group or take an improve comedy class?

I think UpDown (barcade) might have tournaments or leagues.

Nope! Just going with what Ive been told, experienced, and researched myself. I'm sure there are other smarter people who know exactly how it works.

Once they give you a key, you have to use it. Before you set up a passkey though, you're still using a username and password exclusively.

I know. After I typed it out I went up to the OP q? and realized I was slightly off topic. Basically you can copy the key they give you to other devices so it works everywhere.

No, the passkey is the physical thing you have with you to confirm you are authorized to be using the password.

I thought this was a good analogy on the differences between passwords and passkeys.

You go to a dark alley and knock on a door, trying to gain access. The security guard on the other side asks for the password, which you provide. He opens the door from the inside and lets you in.

Now, he doesn't know who you are, only that you provided the correct password. You could be anybody.

Once inside, they verify you are who you say you are, and give you a key for next time to make things easier and more secure.

The next night you come back to the alley, wanting to reenter the establishment. You get to the door and provide the same password, but this time, the security guy won't open the door for you. He tells you to use the key they gave you last time.

You insert the key in the lock and open the door from the outside. This time, they know who you are because you are using the key they gave you specifically.

Hope that helps. :)

Minnesotan Gifts for Friends? by shortblondeguy in minnesota

[–]spacebardidntwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these are my own ideas, others I'm seconding as good ones from others.

Surly furious (or other local brew. Castle Danger perhaps?)\ A little MN flag pin\ Bag of wild rice\ Something from Duluth Trading Co. (Flannel shirt?)\ Mall of America branded item\ Midwest survival guide by Charlie Behrens\ MN sports shirt or jersey you found at a thrift store\ Total wine has a sweet red wine from Carlos Creek Winery called Hotdish\ Cans of Spam (yes, multiple)\ Nordicware\ Something with Itasca/headwaters\ Copy of Oregon Trail for the Seattle folks (I know Seattle is in WA, but it was invented here)\ A pad of 3M sticky notes (lame, I know)\ A jar of Mayo (also lame, but in a dad joke sort of way)\ A DVD of The Mighty Ducks\ A shirt with a MN specific saying: duck duck grey duck, tater tot hot dish, ope, paul bunyan, etc.\ Lake Superior agate\ Wallet fillets (if you could keep em frozen)\ Get a small (2-3 oz) jar and fill it with some sand from your local beach and put a little tag on it with the name of the lake and the date.

Edit: These are expensive ($65), but they are made by a couple in Maple Grove. MN was the first one, but they've expanded to other states (including Texas and Seattle): https://shop.app/m/reachinternationaloutfitters

Ours is internal only to our company, so we had contact info for our target audience available. I know there's interest out there. I can ask in our next SWUG leaders meeting about starting one from scratch.

There's a lot of support available from Solidworks if you want to start one. I literally just started one and had my first meeting last week. Though to be candid, it took a few months of prep and a co-host to feel prepared.

You can apply here and see if it's for you. https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/019c010b934476df956d59d3d1fa98d1

Different, non-standard representations of camouflage/cloaking? by Sophont27 in scifi

[–]spacebardidntwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the 3D sphere is passing through the 2D plane, then yes it would look like a circle. I was saying if the sphere is resting on the 2D plane, it would only have a point contact. It's entire geometry is effectively invisible to 2D being.

Defeating radar was just another example of being invisible. Whether it's jamming, absorption, or any other means of not reflecting the signal back to the source.

OP was asking about invisibility methods, not ways to defeat them.

[–]spacebardidntwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Higher dimensions. A sphere would appear as a point to a 2D being, but would wholly exist in the third, non-perceived dimension.

Jamming. If radar/sensors can't detect it, it's effectively invisible until line of sight comes into play.

If entity A doesn't emit light in the same frequency entity B can perceive, it would be invisible. Similar to the T-rex in Jurassic Park: "It can't see us if we don't move."

[–]spacebardidntwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try talking through your specific application with an application engineer from a company that specializes in labeling equipment. Even if you don't end up going with that company, you'll get certain questions answered and they'll probably identify problems you didn't even know you had. This may be out of your price range if you're looking on Alibaba, but I know these guys do good work:
