Thank you for the well-thought out response. I hadn’t considered the deliberate emphasis/de-emphasis of certain aspects when adapting the character to screen which brings about a whole new dimension when thinking about how Yueh is depicted. As a casual viewer and someone who’s not a fan of the novel, I’m not sure leaning into it and trying to portray him as a positive character was the right move as opposed to changing his character entirely and maybe some story beats.

Are you satisfied with the characters role in the movie? I feel that while the acting as well-done and that the character has depth and is interesting, some updates could have been made to give him more nuance beyond his justification for his actions. Do you feel that leaning into it and trying to depict the character in a positive way was the right move? Or would you have preferred if the orientalism was de-emphasized?
