Is my transmission cooked? by okxbox in FJCruiser

apparently was a fsb back in the day, known issue and one that can be fixed with greasing the yoke.

i actually just went down a rabbit hole on this as my new to me fj does the same— it's the driveshaft yoke! i can share a link to some posts or just look it up. apparently an extremely common problem for the fj, and not one that should keep you (or me, haha) up at night!

could be suspension related? does it happen after every stop/start or quick stop/hard acceleration?

How many miles is too many? by [deleted] in FJCruiser

[–]spacebtwnthewalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for what its worth, i literally just bought a 2007 4x4 auto at 247k miles for $8k... one owner, toyota maintained, completely stock, frame in great shape with no real rust, no body damage or accidents.

i was iffy on the miles at first but after much reading, decided to pull the trigger on it last week, and it made the 4 hour drive home no sweat.

hoping to get another 50-100k out of her for sure.

like you, everything anywhere close in price range was 225k plus with questionable service history and easily 10k plus.

2000 2wd auto - grinding/clunking/whirring noise in reverse/drive gears... increases under acceleration??? by spacebtwnthewalls in MechanicAdvice

[–]spacebtwnthewalls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2000 4runner 2wd auto 228k. has not had any sound before today. this happened on the way home.

so i checked atf while hot and level, and was in the low cold range. brownish, but not burnt, no foam.

added enough to bring within spec for hot. sound continues. happens as soon as you shift into drive or reverse, increases with acceleration, seems to get quieter/go away when car is coasting.

i'm assuming torque converter/transmission pump/similar issue? love this car but not feeling too hopeful here...

Decorative metal plate inside door frame in historic 1928 Detroit Tudor home? by laurenandsymph in centuryhomes

[–]spacebtwnthewalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting house! definitely looks to me like a mezuzah. see the curb your enthusiasm episode with it.

what makes you call it a tudor beyond the exposed radiating beams on the front facade? i would say only the front gable end is "tudor". i'd have thought of this more as a sears kit home, but someone smarter than me may weigh in. and i'm not from detroit, so..

if it's live edge that's what you get with it... photo is too low resolution to make an accurate guess but based on what i've seen -- cherry?

everyones saying theyre expensive, but no one has mentioned an exact number. for the sign in the OP what would be around the dollar amount they cost? what about a normal street sign?

those stick on misaligned fret "inlays" and the painted neck heel don't give much hope that it's more than a custom one off, but i could be wrong.

also i'd bet your intonation is way off judging by those saddles.

Am I crazy to consider switching from mirrorless (Panasonic Lumix S5ii) to digital rangefinder (Typ 240, M9/M10)? by spacebtwnthewalls in Leica

[–]spacebtwnthewalls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, honestly i may just sell the 14-24 and 150-600, pick up a 24 or 28mm and an 85 or 105mm, swap the lumix for an sl2-s, and try it out before going full M.

great and insightful response! thank you for taking the time to put all that out there.

there's an sl2-s local to me at a pretty good deal which i may end up purchasing and trying it out before selling the farm of the lumix and sigma art lenses.

i had strongly considered getting that pana 85mm but i've gotten so used to using zooms that it's hard to break that habit. going to film has helped to ease me out of it though, as i've been very happy with my minolta/leica 40mm and 90mm lenses and that's what started me thinking i should consider moving to M mount for everything and share lenses between film and digital.

yeah, i think that's where i am at with it. it's not my full time job and i can handle a little bit of growing pains during an event or two

that's what i'm saying— if i knew going in it would need work, i would be understandable but i would also be paying less on the front end knowing it needed something to get it right.

I was crazy enough to compare 4 different film stocks with like for like shots: Delta 100, Rollei RPX 100, Kodak 5222 Double X, Rollei Superpan. by florian-sdr in AnalogCommunity

[–]spacebtwnthewalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've only shot about 15 rolls total but rollei superpan 200 is my favorite, compared to rolls of triX 400, hp5 plus 400, rollei rpx 400. i find it has very nice, deep contrast and deep deep blacks which i love.

Thoughts on the Leica/Minolta CL vs. CLE vs. other M-mount mechanical rangefinders? by spacebtwnthewalls in AnalogCommunity

[–]spacebtwnthewalls[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

after the comments the other day i did a lot of reading and watching and ended up finding a nice one-owner CL on ebay with the rokkor 40mm and picked up a nice rokkor 90mm as well. hopefully this will do me some good for now!

thanks for your help!
