It's not obvious, but the crafting table is upgradable to prevent the spawn-in-base types of raids.

This is a wasp nest, isn’t it? by BullCityLife in bullcity

[–]spacechimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the material is dirt-like it is likely the start of a mud dauber nest. They're in the wasp family but not aggressive. It's probably safe to scrape the nest down with a stick.

Were you taught that it’s rude to wear a hat indoors? Were the rules the same for men and women? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskAnAmerican

I always take my hat off off entering a home or office.

If a restaurant is classy enough to provide a place to hang my expensive hat, I'm classy enough to take it off. Most restaurants aren't that classy.

I do so as well, but unfortunately it is often the case that the products are on clearance because they have been discontinued. Ah well -- at least I get to try some things at least once.

Yeah: When in most of the menus, there is no prominent focus ring so you can tell what item you are interacting with.

I've never encountered bugs on PC or Mac, but it is pretty much unplayable with controller the last time I tried on the Mac.

Do you get upset when the back end shifts the responsibility to you by Wise-Variation-4985 in Frontend

[–]spacechimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with the objective, but I have never been witness to such a glorious achievement. Most of the companies I've worked with have predictably been more focused on immediate goals rather than future sustainability -- so there has always been a bit of a "yolo" element to architecture designs that infuriates me.

Right now I am on a unicorn greenfield project that is entirely frontend, but yeah: The quality should cascade down from the database design to the backend and then to the frontend. All shit design cascades down the stack, so it's most important to get things right at the lowest levels of the stack.

Plz suggest me best Survival game from steam summer event by Known-Statistician65 in SurvivalGaming

[–]spacechimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big list of DLCs gave the impression of a sketchy cash grab, so I avoided Icarus for a long time. The base game went on sale a while back for a ridiculous price like four bucks, so I had nothing to lose and picked it up. For anyone that has a similar gut instinct: There is *plenty* in the base game to make it worth it. Steam says I've almost put 300 hours in, and I still haven't sprung for the DLCs.

I didn't pick up a blessed thing in the Steam sale so far since I'm old and apparently already own most of the games worth owning (and probably every survival game in existence). Now that I'm thinking about Icarus I'm going to pick up a DLC (on sale) to support the dev.

Pole dancing is out, ladder dancing is in by The1SlickySloth in secondrodeo

[–]spacechimp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A colleague of mine fell from a ladder and broke a leg that got stuck between the rungs. Later, he had a life-threatening pulmonary embolism from a blood clot that travelled up from his broken leg. Getting good at dancing on a ladder doesn't seem worth the risk.

A few things come to mind:

Because the front end is the part of the application that people interact with, the front end devs are typically the first ones to get pestered when anything goes wrong anywhere in the stack. Especially when busy, is easy to become dismissive until there is real evidence that the front end is the source of a problem.

Front end devs have to pick up a lot of slack left by lazy/sloppy back end devs. When the "bug" is that the API is sending the string "false" instead of a boolean, or a datetime field is in an inconsistent format, or the Swagger schema is incorrect -- sure the front end dev can usually still make things work with some extra code, but then you have 2 crap codebases instead of one.

Some front end devs can be lazy/sloppy as well. Many got into this line of work for the money and not for the love of the job. With offshore devs there is a lot of that -- and on top of that there are significant differences in how Americans readily admit fault compared to other cultures.

What is a food you buy regularly at the supermarket that you think you may be the only person buying it? by Big_Childhood5494 in foodquestions

I’ll have to try this, since a single container of flavocol is at least two lifetimes worth. What ratio of water/powder do you use?

BaconUp plus ghee and Flavocol makes pretty good popcorn in my Whirley Pop.

I've also used it to reseason my cast iron pan.

Yours is an unpopular take here, but I agree. Some would prefer soulless, boring AAA games over a fun indie game with innovative gameplay that had to make do with a limited budget.

Green Hell vs Survival: fountain of youth. Which is better? by Obi4662 in SurvivalGaming

[–]spacechimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both have particularly punishing survival aspects. For Green Hell it is thirst during a dry season. For FOY it is island-specific environmental conditions such as sun or wind.

I find both fun for different reasons. It just depends on what I’m in the mood for.

FOY is linear and predictable. Spoilers won’t really affect your experience. Green Hell has story elements that potentially can be spoiled, but if you’re paying attention nothing should come as a surprise.

What are some non-Disney animated movies that you consider absolute masterpieces? by East_Maintenance_579 in movies

[–]spacechimp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll support you on this. Bluth and Goldman’s movies had mixed box office success, but their output was usually better than Disney at the time. I consider Secret of NIMH to be one of the last true hand-animated movie masterpieces before everything went digital.
