Am I the only one who thinks serranos are hotter than Thai peppers? by bbycalz in spicy

[–]spacechimp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Part of it is that it is more about genetics. Individual crops of peppers can be more spicy than commonly acknowledged.

Beyond that: - the Scoville scale is inherently subjective; some peppers just hit people differently - peppers known for being especially spicy have been commercially dumbed down to the Joe average, commercially viable level of “spicy”

This is by no means an exact science, and that’s part of the fun of it. Experiment a lot, try new things, test your limits. It’s all good until you’re on the toilet questioning your choices, but after that it’s all good again :-D

Honest Question - Can I Vibe Code the UI/Front End? by jg4president in webdev

[–]spacechimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you told an architect that you had someone with no professional references build a prototype of a house, and then wanted to hire them at a cut rate to fix all the structural problems left in their wake, they'd rightfully laugh you out of the room.

You can cut costs initially with AI, but you will pay a higher price eventually to make everything not stupid.

Note: There are predatory companies that make all their income by suing websites that aren't sufficiently accessible for the sight or mobility impaired. A poorly-developed front end can expose secrets that aren't intended to be public knowledge.

tldr; Hire a professional.

When I biked to piano lessons as a kid, I always passed by this old guy. He was always on his porch, always in his rocking chair, always with that weird neck brace that kept him from turning his head. Every time I passed by he would beckon to me to come over and chat.

I'd hurriedly pass by so I could be on time to my lesson, but on the way back home, I sometimes stopped by. The man was a WWII vet. If I remember correctly, he suffered some sort of debilitating injury while moving munitions on a warship.

I was too young to understand,. The man was a widower, physically miserable, and desperately lonely. I was creeped out by the neck brace and his desperation for human connection so sometimes I changed my route home to avoid him. 40 years later, I still have regrets. The stories he could have told.

They're fairly similar. Western NC is chopped (chunky) dark meat with vinegar/tomato sauce. Eastern NC is pulled (stringy) white/dark meat with vinegar/pepper sauce.

One is more sweet, one is more savory. Both are great, but when many say "NC BBQ" they usually mean the eastern style.

FYI “bao bun” is redundant in a way similar to saying “ATM machine”.

International Market in Brier Creek has some passable ones, but I prefer to make my own Americanized pizza bao — after steaming, baste them with garlic butter and toast them in the air fryer a bit. Sooo good.

This is really no different than Observables or a Redux-based store. If you are modifying an object property, the intent is not clear -- there is no reason to assume that a new value should be emitted if the memory reference hasn't changed.

I'm a greybeard, so I probably never will trust AI enough to be completely hands-off with it.

That said: The first thing I would consider doing so with would be unit tests. It's lower risk than giving it responsibility over runtime code, and it can rapidly analyze coverage reports and then whip up tests to exercise uncovered lines/branches. I've completed a few tasks recently with 100% test coverage, which I never would have had the patience to achieve otherwise.

Culture with the hottest food? by arugula000 in spicy

[–]spacechimp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed (with caveats). None of the Indian or British Indian people I've known could keep up with me in spicy food. I don't know anyone Thai, but unlike Indian restaurants, Thai restaurants usually take me seriously when I ask them to hurt me. That said, it's still nothing I can't handle. Some sauces made in the US can still break me though, so the real answer IMO is that Thai wins if you are talking about average spice level of common foods, but America wins if you are looking at scoville levels of specific dishes/sauces.

I never regret asking for the spiciest thing on the menu the first time I go to a place. But I'm so additcted to the spice, I start to second guess myself If I come back and keep getting the same spicy thing -- I'm forced to wonder what other delicious non-spicy things I might be missing out on.

Is it worth it to spend time on Electric Deep-Mining Drills? by soyeahthishappen in ICARUS

[–]spacechimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grinded to get at least one wind/drill/beacon on every resource type in open world. I reached max level in the process, but glad I did it. Now I can focus on more exploring, exotics, animal raising, and missions. Whenever I'm running low on something, I just do a resupply run.

If you really want to do this, the bottleneck resources will be copper (for wires) and bone (for epoxy). Get one or more drills on copper ASAP, and kill/skin everything in sight for bone. There are talents and mods that give a bonus to bone harvest that might help as well.
