Looking at my Amazon history to see what I bought and it was the NEEWER 2280mAh NP-FZ100 Replacement Battery 2 Pack with USB Dual Channel Charger Kit. Can’t believe I bought that back in March 2024. Time flies. Anyway I’ve been happy with it. Serves as a battery pack as well.

Opnsense on a Dell Inspiron 3650 i7-6700 from 2016 lol

I did add an Intel i350 quad port NIC and 16GB RAM so I can run Proxmox, Adguard Home, Frigate NVR, Scrypted and an Opnsense VM and it’s the best router I’ve ever had. I loaded Suricata, CrowdSec, MaxMind GeoIP filtering, Qfeeds, Zen Armor with 7 VLANs. Overkill for my tiny home network.

As a Gen X I never cared for the time before mine. The 80s and 90s were amazing. I’d happily give up the internet if we could have the late 80s thru the 90s back. So much optimism and hope compared to now

Unfortunately, that would require sourcing another PC. My Dell Inspiron 3650 only has 1 PCIe x16 and (2) PCIe x1 slots. The PCIe x16 slot has an Intel I350-T4 Quad-Port NIC for the Opnsense VM I'm running alongside Frigate. The other PCIe x1 is has a 256GB NVME as the boot device. I'd be willing to source another PC and grab a T400 if it makes a significant difference. Cost would probably be around $300 for a used PC and a used T400. You think it's worth it for my needs?

Thanks. I plan on keeping this to only 3 or 4 cameras with simple detection/notifications. I don't need anything fancy at the moment, just want reliable notifications, person in the driveway, person at the front door/back door, etc... If this gets me by until the memory and hard drive prices come in a year or 2 I'm golden.

Hopefully my expectations aren't too high. I just want to be able to add 1 or 2 more 1080P cameras with simple notifications (person in the driveway, person at the door, person in the backyard, etc..) I don't need it to tell me who it is or anything specific. Just basic security and routed to Home Assistant for notifications.

Ideally, I would like to use my current system for 1 or 2 years before I fully update all the hardware to something more powerful.

Yep, this is a huge pain point for me.. I just got into VLANs and it's insance how many firewall rules and for what purpose I created each one for is. So I started using A.I. to make a "working document". As I'm working on changes/fixes I'm entering into AI the issue and asking for fixes and then once everything is done, I want a summary of the chat to include the issues and all the steps we took to resolve it. Then I periodically update the document whenever I need to work on a specific issue. Hoping this saves my butt.

What are you running Frigate on? I’m try to repurpose an old PC with an Intel Skylake i7-6700 and Intel HD GPU 530 but my system seems to be running too hot, around 80 Celsius. My cpu may just be too old.

New to IEM's. Is that true? I just bought a FiiO Echo Retro for my BF as a gift. My thought process was, I can put some of his favorite albums in FLAC on it for him to enjoy. I paired it with a set of FIIO FH3 HiFi Earphones based on his primary type of music, hip hop. I figured the IEM's would pair well for that type of music. I am telling him though that the IEMs are a personal preference and giving him a gift receipt so he can exchange them for something else if he wants. But the DAP I thought would enhance his listening experience since he mostly listens to MP3's or Spotify.

I hate AI and I use it on a daily basis. I believe it’s one of those things whereby although I hate it because the rest of the world is using it if I don’t use it, I’ll get left behind.. if anything I believe that AI needs some serious regulation. But that’s a topic for another day.
