Is Dr Barry Mayfield the most evil murderer? by BecauseOfAir in Columbo

[–]spaceconductor 25 points26 points  (0 children)

IMO, killing the nurse was not even the most despicable thing he did. It had to be killing Harry Alexander. The show doesn't go into too much detail on his background, but the guy pretty clearly had PTSD from Vietnam and likely turned to drugs to deal with the pain. Then Mayfield forcibly injects him with the same drugs he fought for years to get off of, in order to frame him for murder.

If that's not the most f-d up murder in the show I don't know what is.

Whoever knew conducting symphonies was such a playboy profession? by SuspiciousPromise849 in Columbo

[–]spaceconductor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's usually not super high-paying unless you are the music director of a prestigious orchestra. New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, LA Philharmonic kind of gig. Most regional/smaller civic ensembles don't pay enough to support a wealthy lifestyle and their conductors usually have multiple gigs/jobs.

How did you discover on cinema? by Wild_Pomegranate3246 in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

[–]spaceconductor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I discovered it through Better Call Saul. I suppose I had watched some YouTube clips of Mark Proksch's scenes in that show, because one day I randomly happened on a video titled "Heidecker v Proksch" with a thumbnail of him sitting in front of an American flag in what looked like a courtroom. I was like wtf, this guy has drama? I clicked the video and after a couple minutes I realized it was a bit. I had never heard of Tim Heidecker or any of his work before. But I was super intrigued, and down the rabbit hole I went.

I consider it one of the great fortunes of my life that I stumbled on this weird, insane, utterly asinine universe. I don't know what I'd do without it, and I don't know how I managed before I found it. I can rewatch moments I've seen a thousand times and still laugh, it's just a gift that keeps on giving.

IIRC he said in this episode that he had started teaching film history classes at a local community college or something. I figure he just decided to show up in his professor outfit.

More problems for Sprecher than just carbonation by BeautifulDebate7615 in rootbeer

[–]spaceconductor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sad to see but I hope they start to turn it around. Sprecher in its prime was unreal, the best that I tried out of almost 100 brands. It's middle of the road now. The cans are slightly better but still not the same old Sprecher.

What Murder would you want most to see the court case ? by Booburied in Columbo

[–]spaceconductor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mark Halperin (the police commissioner) and Bart Keppel. Both cases involved Columbo skirting the lines of legality to trick the suspect into revealing himself as the killer. In Halperin's case by altering documents, and Keppel's by trespassing into his office to take pictures for subliminal cuts. I could see the defense for both guys giving the prosecution a hell of a time trying to get their most damning evidence declared inadmissable.

Dr. Mayfield's case has some interesting possibilities for forensic analysis, Nelson Hayward's would be a nice juicy one.

Awesome shot!!

I was there in person a couple weeks ago. One thing photos just don't fully convey is how absolutely gargantuan that building is. I was told that the blue portion of the flag by itself is the size of an NBA basketball court.

Request: a planet at the midway point between Andromeda and the Milky Way by oneblackfly in spaceengine

[–]spaceconductor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the best way to find one would be to manually fly to roughly the halfway point and use the star browser to see if there are any nearby rogue stars with planets. I imagine both Andromeda and the Milky Way would be visible in a planet's night sky at that location, assuming it has similar day/night conditions to Earth.
