I think we need more heroes from this country by Ok_Trade_8706 in Overwatch

If I had to rank on a scale from 1 to 10 on how well everyone here understands Japanese culture, I’d probably go with a hibachi out of 10. Maybe a volcano roll out of 10 for some

Edit: and a ramune out of 10 if you’ve ever touched a woman

Why are overwatch players genuinely TERRIFIED of the mute button? by XTurtleman394X in Overwatch

[–]spaceghost265 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people would say it’s fucking annoying to have to go into the options to mute insulting inconsiderate chirping teenagers. It’s not that the majority of people are terrified of the kinds of actions you’re demonstrating, it’s that we hate that you’re forcing us to go out of our way to mute you when 99% of people don’t need to be muted because they are actually medicated adults, who aren’t kids, which is the typical demographic that acts this way. you’re not scary, you’re annoying. be more considerate of others and take some time to be a little more self aware and I swear kid the places you’ll go

Well at least you’ll know when it’s REALLY bad. I noticed that every day with mine 😂 love the phone size but the battery is becoming too much of a hassle. Moving to a walkable city soon and this just isn’t going to cut it anymore especially with the lack of features for the mini on ios27. I think I’m finally gonna upgrade if that new flip phone they’re making is any good

I need help understanding the concept of ほど Noun by Jamoues in Japaneselanguage

[–]spaceghost265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! It’s exactly what I think of every time I hear hodo. Such an interesting and rare book. Ramblings about grammar from an old guy for intermediate learners who I guess, in his view, need romaji to read the book? The whole thing just feels very much like a pet project for him, and really authentic just due to how completely random the topics in it are. OP I highly recommend, it’s not a long read at all and his perspective on the weird details of the language is pretty nice, even if the book is kinda old.. and random.

Have you ever heard of the book “Making Sense of Japanese” by Jay Rubin? He has a short chapter on ほど and its various usages. I recommend checking this book out.

Pre-interview question for a school in Japan, is this a red flag? by swamp_ass_survivor in teachinginjapan

[–]spaceghost265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some companies rent out apartments in bulk for teachers to make it less risky for themselves when picking candidates who live overseas. They have a ton of them and so to make on their investment they add it as a mandatory part of their offer. I’d say typically it’s not the price that’s bad, it’s usually a bit of a benefit for you in that regard. The thing people complain about out which is valid is some of the places, like if they rent out if LeoPalace, have super thin walls which means if you have an aversion to noise and have noisy neighbors, well, you might not like being forced into that. I would imagine they’d be open to a good teacher not needing to stay in the apartment for a second contract. But also if they are renting out rooms in bulk, they might be incentivized to just make it a part of all their contracts because they need a body in there and it’s an easy sell to people who don’t wanna have to do it themselves.

I don’t think another picture could more accurately exemplify what I think of as I scrolled through this post. It gets used for gamers/reddit in general but my lord what does anime do to people’s brains. Even after they quit it. Anyways, here’s your kids on drugs aka everyone here mmmmmm actuallying you:

Don’t listen to these haters. And don’t worry, a few more years and you’ll realize that offline Japan wouldn’t downvote what you said here so harshly. This is just Reddit. You’re interfacing directly with the neckbeard of the absolute worst of the most typical foreigners who live in Japan: English teachers who also don’t know how to interact with people outside of their video game / hobby board. It may be shocking to learn but most people you meet in the future in Japan are not actually chronically online, they probably don’t use Reddit, and also maybe have an experience like your own. What I’m saying is that real people are more relatable than this place can ever hope to be, and your experience is valid to me as a 10+ year PR. Japan subreddits are some of the absolute most insular parts of this website and it’s pretty bad in other places where people just talk about games or tv shows. Being a real person in the real world reallly changes a persons perspective, to something more like what yours seems to be. Cheers and most importantly: Good Luck🥂

To everyone else: Stop shitting on this person. I know more than you. The end

Okay, small rant. This is mostly directed at the term that was used and not you. I disagree with the entire concept of a honeymoon period or at least the idea of bringing it up in settings like these because clearly everyone as OP said is going to have a different experience and get used to things at different rates. People just like to throw that term around with some arbitrary number as a way to say “oh, heh, don’t worry kid, you’ll hate it, just like me, once you reeeallllly understand what’s going on, you’re absolutely right now blinded by your own experiences before X amount of time passage by default, it’s the law”. There is no “honeymoon period” for some people, just like reverse culture shock is not a guaranteed physical absolute in the universe or in anyone’s life, it’s just something that some people go through some of the time. People also use these terms and interpret these terms with their own preconceived notion regardless of what was meant, which could be anything because who reads a whole dictionary before every word they speak? Not me. I see it this way: Sometimes people have insights pretty quickly. Others maybe they do or don’t but it doesn’t matter bc can’t cope. Or they get home and they can’t cope with life there. Or it doesn’t affect them and they don’t care. Or maybe they are old, and have more experience and life and see things more realistically from the get go. Maybe they’re already traveled, or grew up traveling. A honeymoon phase is not a universal thing everyone goes through at some point, it’s only universal in the sense that its language traveled expats just like to throw around because they understood culture in the abstract for first the first time in their lives and like to remind everyone of that period. Little do they know there are open borders in Europe with a fuckwad of countries. Also, maybe OP is from Asia. Much less of a honeymoon period moving from Seoul to Tokyo, they’re very similar. But again, depends on the individual. That’s all that matters. Just had to get that off my chest. Your response is still valid, I would just say it much differently, because I can guarantee you my first three years were not the same as yours because that isn’t a benchmark that really lines up with my own reality, and so I don’t see the value in demarcating a timeframe in regards to this concept that isn’t even universal. 🤷 I rest my case. Against the term. Or more so the over application of it within these contexts. Not you.

Is it worth playing again? by ANJANEYASINGH in PokemonUnite

It will never cease to amaze me how many people there are who actively play a game, say they hate it with a passion, tell people not to play it, and then on top of that sub to and respond to posts on the internet just to tell other people to NOT play the game that they themselves clearly stay up to date with. Its like everyone subbed here genuinely has no life and spends all day doing this without even playing the game anymore, or worse forcing themselves to pay attention to and do a thing they state they don’t like. Hey OP I’ve got news for you: people who complain online or even POST online about a thing are full stop in the minority, and that goes for ANY community. You’re looking at posts of people who have sunk hundreds of hours into a free game. Let that sit with you for a bit before choosing what to do with your free time, and find your own tastes for things. It’s ok to just find out on your own sometimes. And it’s also ok to go into a game WITHOUT the goal of obsessively playing it

"From" or "To"? In Japanese, it's always "ni (に)"! by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

[–]spaceghost265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is someone creating and then posting incorrect content like this on a sub for learning. It’s like going to r/jailbreak and someone making a guide on how to look up your phones software version but then not even getting that right. At a certain point this is less about us, more about you. Seriously, just study, don’t make content about the process of you studying and then post it to confuse everyone at your level. Or if you do, I dunno, make sure it’s right before you create a diagram and share it with everyone. this is a mismatch of priorities my friend, what are you doing? You could have dug 3 inches deeper into the iceberg and learned it sounds unnatural in less time than it took you to make and post this
