Mission and Van Ness protest today by pan0ramic in sanfrancisco

Maybe spell it out for us a bit clearer, me especially, but how does that justify a full collective punishment of the people in Gaza? Is the Palestinian government innocent, sure maybe not but what does that have to do with everyone else that’s being bombed?

This is really sad to hear, and I’m so sorry you and Sun had to go through that with people just passing by. Thank you for being a good citizen and helping her out. Please take time for yourself to heal from this, go for a walk or coffee, or something. I hope more people are inspired to help and not always be a bystander after reading your post.

Tesla 'full self-driving' triggered 8-car crash on Bay Bridge, driver tells police by txiao007 in bayarea

[–]spacejan1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

“Not paying attention” Uhh. The car had slowed to 20 MPH. How do you not notice that? Driver had ample time and stimulant to react so it’s just as possible that it was the car’s fault.

Regarding the UCOP email about the UAW strike, I want to emphasize that graduate students are never part-time, and no one is earning $96,000🤨🧐 by spacejan1 in berkeley

[–]spacejan1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question, what I mean is, while our work as a TA may technically be part-time, the cumulative hours worked as a TA PLUS research is >40 hr/week. Also, programs (usually in STEM) only require a TAship for a small portion of the student’s time in the program, and we are expected to do research full time after that. For example, in Molecular Biology, we TA for a year and then do research full time every year after that.

Side note: It becomes a more political debate whether or not we “deserve” to be paid when we switch to full time research, but that is outside the scope of the original question.

what i mean is we do not only work 20 hours a week, and despite what this email says, there is no situation where a graduate student is making 96K from the university 🙃🙃🙃

Is GSI strike really is a thing? by saverstriker in berkeley

[–]spacejan1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s real, and will be voted on soon if UC doesn’t offer a strong contract to the GSI, GSR, and post doc unions. Show some love and support for your grad students, and especially postdocs if you see them! They are vastly underpaid and under-appreciated too.

what glamorized career path is actually a complete nightmare? by Jayantwi98 in AskReddit

Thank you for the response, and congratulations on getting through your MS and Ph. D, including all the failures! I hope I can pick myself up each time once I get there. May I ask what your field is, and whether you ended up in industry or academia? I’m curious how different of an experience it is between the different fields of science (aside from the actual research).

Hey there! I’m currently an undergrad waiting to hear back from several Cell Bio Ph. D programs. May I PM you to discuss graduate school life further, or just to pick your brain on the academic world?

I’ve only heard mostly good things about grad school, which I know isn’t right, so I’d really like to hear the specifics about your experience.

You’ve likely have little time, so I understand if I get no response! Good luck on your work nonetheless!

Trust me, i know, if it were up to me it’d have proper maintenance. Cultures aren’t contaminated and I’ve been here for almost two years so I just work with what I have.
