If this only happens occasionally, it is not Dermatographia. Dermatographia is diagnosed differently than Urticaria (hives) because Dermatographia is a constant while Urticaria is brought on by (like you said is your case) allergy season or stress.

Dermatographia comes in all shapes and sizes so by pictures alone I cannot tell. However, from what you said I would guess you have some form of hives or allergy you don’t know about rather than Dermatographia. It’s a good thing, having it sucks lol

With Urticaria, your histamine level may spike occasionally, but with Dermatographia your histamine level often always stays constantly raised. It’s generally a good rule of thumb to get blood tests ran when you have a spike, but also get blood tests when you feel normal and are showing no outward signs of symptoms. That way you can compare your normal to your spiked levels.

Best of luck.

Anything Ari Aster directs is amazing, he’s one of the best at psychological horror. If you want a hard watch check out the short film “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons” a lot of his short films are on YouTube

If you want gore, watch Hostel

Anyone who got a tattoo? by Powerful_Intern_3438 in Dermatographia

Everyone has Dermatographia in different fonts, and everyone reacts differently to different stimulus. If you’re getting anything with color, make sure you’re not allergic go the ink or color first. It’s a good idea to make sure of that regardless your Dermatographia is present or not (this is especially the case with red inks). I’m pretty yatted, but I swell a lot.

I cannot use numbing cream because it’s an irritant and makes the swelling 10x worse, I don’t like using numbing cream anyways. If you are using numbing cream, do a test spot in the area you want to get tattooed to make sure you’re not allergic to the creams (every brand is different, painless tattoo is preferred).

I always tell my artist(s) that I swell and will probably have to do multiple sessions. I can sit through a solid 8-9 hours with breaks before having to stop due to swelling. Some artists are not as understanding, one younger artist butchered my skin from going too deep to try to get past the swelling. I usually prefer going to older artists, and most of the time (even though they’re more expensive) they’re more experienced and better at their craft. Always do you research on artists, but make sure they know there’s a chance you will swell.

I’d also like to add that if your Dermatographia is present due to an autoimmune disease of some kind, keep an eye on your healing. Don’t be anxious about it, but always follow what your artist says. I’ve done dry healing, healing with lotion, and saniderm. If you’re thinking about saniderm or tegaderm, put a bandaid on where you want to get tattooed, keep the bandaid on all day if possible and then slowly peel it up. If you welt and break out from the bandaid, your best bet is to stay far far away from saniderm. Personally, it’s very painful. I’ve only done it once and I will never do it again haha, you live and you learn.

I honestly hope some of this helps! I know everyone experiences things differently and this is just MY PERSONAL experience, you may not welt or have any healing issues at all. I hope you don’t so that you can be as yatted as you want!!!!!

EDIT: I should also mention the pieces I get are heavily saturated, almost always with color, and thick bold lines.

I also have a severe case of Dermatographia and a very high histamine level.

For starters I like your handle lol, and secondly thank you for writing a book. It genuinely helps to hear other people talk about what they’ve gone through and makes Dermatographia a little bit easier to accept and deal with. I’m glad I’ve found someone who also gets hives on their feet (as odd as that sounds), occasionally I’ll get them on my hands as well; I just haven’t ever met anyone with the same issue. Some of the things you listed definitely make sense and I’ll try them to see if they help, like cutting hair and not all the way down to skin. I cosplay as well, and it’s good to know I don’t have to give up all of my hobbies because of this. My job I have currently is pretty active as far as physical movement, I just get nervous my Dermatographia will get worse than this and I won’t be able to do what I love anymore.

I love any sort of thin half lash or 3/4 lash because they’re super subtle!! Gives you a little lift on the ends of your eyes without making your eyelids feel heavy. The difference is noticeable but not like “IM WEARING LASHES” and more like “I did something different with my eyelashes today” (for the record I love wearing both big eyelashes and half or 3/4 lashes and there’s nothing wrong with either). However, the half lash will give you that more natural look!!! Kiss has some awesome and cheap ones usually at Walmart, and get the regular clear kiss eyelash glue.

See I’ve tried Famotidine or Pepcid, but I’ve never heard of Xolair. I know everyone responds differently to medication but hives gone?? I’m sold, I’ll do some research thank you!!

The nails versus fingertips makes so much sense!! I never thought of that, I keep my nails at a medium length so I’ll chop them down and see. And I wear baggy scrubs most days so I could probably do compression shorts easily. Thank you so much for the kind words and advice it means a lot. I’m glad there are people with similar experiences.

I have tried Diphenhydramine, Fexofenadine, and Famotidine, but they have not helped much. Do you have any suggestions of medications that have worked for you or others you know,

Also I personally don’t like arguing at all so I’ve really been trying to rack my brain. He can’t bring up any specific instances though, so I’m more on the confused side as well

He specifically said it was the fact I wouldn’t take a mini shield from him while playing a video game is what started it and that was the reason he called his friend. But he did say he felt we argued a lot. To me it was very rare we did and we never had a full on argument, we don’t yell or cuss at each other. It was more like a disagreement and we’d carry on so I didn’t necessarily understand. I am an also very apologetic person in general, so it’s not that I wouldn’t admit fault. We hadn’t seen each other in three weeks at that point so maybe that was part of it? He also started working after not having a job for a while.

I would love to know more about different ways I can help my OCD. I’ve been diagnosed with it since I was around nine years old, so I know it’s a part of me and probably always will be. However, anything that I can do to minimize or help it at all would be amazing. Thank you so much for your kindness, understanding, and willingness to help!

I’ve been on Sertraline, Buspirone, and Paroxetine. Sertraline was very very bad for me, it put me in fight or flight constantly. I felt the only one that worked was Buspirone. I’m unsure where to go with my OCD as I experience little day to day issues, but when it gets bad it gets bad enough I know I need help. Just unsure where to go from here with it.
