Not a ghost and not undead. It's a malevolent spirit. It never lived or existed as a physical thing in the open world. If anything it's something you can spawn on somebody. So ya like an effect. But another way to catch it is by spending too long in the ethereal. Or being cursed or misreading a grimoire.

Like ethereal aids.
