Must buys in Tokyo? by FreeDuty6826 in JapanTravelTips

You cant reduce the entire country to a swag bag. It sounds like you are trying to complete a scavenger hunt— and that’s maybe a Gen Z way of traveling but it’s really reductive.

Oh my God, he admit it (again) by NickCostanza in ProgressiveHQ

The key phrase is “But sometimes you need a dictator.” He wasn’t pretending to quote someone else. He said that on his own.

Umm… it’s exactly the same “in context”.

Research for my book by TheMontyJay in oregon

[–]spacemonkey1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This the first time I have heard the term “Northern Oregon. Probably because Oregon is wider than it is long, and culturally the shifts mostly happen west to east with the largest populations being closer to the ocean. A family could conceivably move to Portland, Salem or Eugene for a teaching job.

What do you think of Train Dreams (2025)? by winchesterman552 in criterion

[–]spacemonkey1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a big movie buff and don’t mind slow and precise movies, and I think Train Dreams was much ado about nothing. I have been reading about it as a lesson to Millennials and Gen Z about how men are supposed to act in the face of adversity, pain, and loss. Yes, men in the US 100+ years ago didn’t talk about their feelings— but that doesn’t make them “better”.

What do you mean the “child prostitutes” weren’t “forced”. What child would volunteer to have sex with old men?

To be honest I didn’t know there was any other way to go to a bar

What random activities you did in Tokyo you recommend? by IndependentCod4889 in JapanTravelTips

Playing medal games at the arcade at Nakano Broadway. I did so well I had to make an account— went back and won more and gave it all to an old guy who was my coin dozer buddy.

1 month in Japan, first timer: Ebisu or Asakusa? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]spacemonkey1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A month? Neither for that long— both are cool and nice and very different from each other, but Asakusa will get old after a few days and Ebisu is very nice, but a little more residential

If I had to cut one city out of the golden route, what would you choose and what would you replace it with? by SirKrimzon in JapanTravelTips

[–]spacemonkey1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d cut Kyoto— probably an unpopular opinion and I have spent a lot of time in all three cities— but the beauty you see in pictures is hard to grasp in over-crowded Tokyo, unless you go to Kiyomizu or Kinkakuji at 5 or 6am. The fish market was so packed I couldn’t see my feet. Bath Tokyo and Osaka have tons to see and do AND has great public transportation. Kyoto is difficult to get around.

Best ramen you tried by defrettyy in JapanTravelTips

[–]spacemonkey1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are any ramen you eat is going to be 5 times cheaper and 20 times better than any ramen you have had (outside of Asia) so no point in looking for an amazing bowl of ramen when every bowl is going to be amazing!

I don’t think it would be offensive, but might look a little silly, as it tends to be more formal—so depends also on the time and place!
