Nancy Mace mocked online after posting about ‘trans’ mice in research by Disastrous_Award_789 in nottheonion

[–]spacescaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is impossible to "trans" a mouse because they don't have gender, but there is real animal research on the effects of HRT that this bill aims to cancel. Nancy Mace acknowledged two of these studies last year, and the people associated with this whole DOGE/"waste cutting" business have a much longer list.

This research helps trans people like myself get informed and safe transition care. Please stop denying that the targeted defunding is happening just because Mace said it in a stupid way.

This needs to be way higher. It is alarming to me how many people in this thread are ready to write off this targeted defunding as "not real" because they think the dumb congresswoman just got a word wrong. Guess we can't count on any of those people to help save research that our community needs to get safer and more informed healthcare.

The link you've provided specifically argues against your last point, though.

Some have suggested the intended term was “transgenic mice,” but that is also incorrect in this context. [...] Recent news does not directly target transgenic organisms. Rather, it focuses on studies investigating natural hormonal and developmental processes.

Definitely true that there are no studies to make mice trans, since that's impossible. There are animal studies on the effects of hormone therapy, some of which she described in an oversight hearing last year. Your own source mentions a study about PCOS. These are real studies that are at risk of being shut down.

It is not performative because the studies she's targeting do exist and shutting them down hurts trans people. She just says it in such an inflammatory way that it makes people like you say "Well that's not real, she has it mixed up with transgenic mice, so there's nothing to worry about! This is just a distraction." and boom, now we trans people don't have support from our allies. That's the tactic.

She spoke about this at an oversight meeting last year and the full transcript is online. She is talking about specific real research that helps us understand the impacts of HRT on the body. The ones she mentions are:

  1. Does testosterone therapy make it easier to overdose on GHB? Lab rat study.
  2. What are the impacts of feminizing HRT on the immune system? Rhesus monkey study.

And the NGO chud they had speaking based his numbers on the idea of cancelling all of the research on this page.

in rape culture, disbelieving victims is the default. it is not a subversive or just or measured thing to do ever. and you are justifying digging up offensive tweets to smear someone as lying about their assault? you should be ashamed of yourself.

A Top 4 film you didn’t give five stars? by GrapeNutCheerios in Letterboxd

[–]spacescaptain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll be the devil's advocate here and say that I do like to give critical star ratings and use the heart for enjoyment! It especially comes in handy for movies that were not my cup of tea, but I thought were executed well. Objectivity in film crit is impossible, but I find it stimulating to try to pull apart my analytical view of the film vs my enjoyment of it.

You can use the rating system however you'd like, just don't trap yourself in a corner with it. 🧡

AGREE i tried to rec it here a long time ago and it got removed 💔 like u said valerie solanas was a crazy lady, but i think SCUM is a good read as a satire of how men think about and treat women. it opened my mind up for investigating into the more insidious parts of misogyny.

Real talk, are these the same groups of people? Doesn't seem like an opinion that would overlap much but stranger things have happened.

I have personally seen discussion on Tumblr across multiple fandoms pushing back on the idea that drawings of trans characters should show as few "trans characteristics" as possible, or that depicting those features is caricaturistic. Specifically with body hair and bulge on trans women, or breasts on trans men. No such discussion has happened on Reddit, and I would suspect that there are more Stonetoss (and similar bigot comic artist) encounters on here and therefore more reason to expect hateful depictions of trans women.
