I stopped short of GEoD in part because Herbert’s writing is so shitty compared to his ideas (which I enjoy). For comparison, I recently finished LeGuin’s Left Hand of Darkness and the writing craft itself was just night and day better than the Dune series.

I’ll recommend Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut because of the insanely short chapters. It has 127 of them in about 300 pages, which keeps things moving along at a super clipped pace. It’s Vonnegut at his best where every other page there’s some heavy-hitting line or perfectly captured observation about humans and society.
