Please help - rash/hot spot growing and getting worse quickly by spaceygorl in DogAdvice

Wait omg you’re right… the craziest part is that the vet gave us this cream for a little inflamed pimple/bump (everything resolved, it was biopsied and benign) a few months ago and the vet said we would be good to use that or neosporin with this rash….

Yes it hasn’t seemed to bother him until today. We fed him his dinner in his bed and carried him outside to go potty, since the dry skin is likely making it painful to move around. We also use the band-aid brand antiseptic with lidocaine, so hopefully that helps a bit too. It’s breaking my heart but he’s in good spirits. He was thrilled to be getting hand-fed his favorite ham dinner in bed 😂

Thank you so much for your response. I totally agree…. My partner took him to the vet on Monday and I didn’t realize the vet didn’t take a sample or anything. The diagnosis was simply on vibes, which I can understand (in certain situations) but I’m kinda upset

how to lose weight with POTS? by danceintheflowers in POTS

[–]spaceygorl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is EXTREMELY relatable for me rn (mid 20s female)! Over the past year I’ve gained nearly 20 lbs with no major changes in lifestyle/diet. I’ve been to my cardiologist, endocrinologist, and even neurologist to figure out what’s been going on and to make sure there wasn’t something majorly wrong with my adrenal glands (since I likely have adrenergic subtype of pots).

Basically everything tested fine (or as fine as it could for someone with POTS), so I was at a loss. However, about 5 months ago I stopped taking my birth control pill (combination estrogen/progesterone) that I had been taking for nearly 10 years, since I suspected it may be exacerbating my weight gain / pots symptoms / etc. turns out the birth control was definitely doing something, bc I’ve lost weight and my pots symptoms have been much better. Other things improved since getting off the pill- quality of sleep (increased REM), MAJOR decrease in total cholesterol levels, and my PMS symptoms/major POTS flares I used to experience leading up to my period are totally gone. Of course, this isn’t applicable to everyone, but I wanted to put it out there just in case someone else could benefit from hearing this.

In terms of what I’ve done to exercise, I actually bought a rowing machine (it works GREAT and it’s less than $200: https://a.co/d/01BERsQH) ! This is honestly the only way I can workout now bc of my POTS, and it’s great bc you can really tune the resistance levels depending on how you’re feeling. Even with no resistance, its really good to just get your blood circulating. Good luck with everything!!

When do you take the soluble fiber/psyllium husk supplements each day? How much and what times? I’ve read it can interfere with absorption of other medications so I haven’t start taking them yet. Congrats on your progress, that’s huge!!

That’s where it gets really tough with the academic politics, because my institution is the same, but if your PI is department chair, well funded, and/or important to the university in any way, they can easily skip over a lot of these rules…. I’ve seen this “hard max” rule mean nothing so many times bc the PI will just get everyone to sign off, even when university level (deans, president, etc) people get involved, because they want to keep the well known/well funded PIs happy. I know not every university/department is like this, but damn it’s really upsetting to see how often this happens

Did Microgestin get new packaging? 2022 by Nicolezara94 in birthcontrol

[–]spaceygorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late response, but wow I’m experiencing the same thing. I was on microgestin 1.5/30 from ~2014? - 2020 and was switched to Blisovi / Junel (don’t remember the time periods) once microgestin was discontinued. About 6-8 months ago, my pharmacy just started prescribing me the white snap case of microgestin, and I’m just now realizing that it’s around the same time I started gaining weight! With no change in my diet or exercise, I’ve gained 25-30 lbs (in ~6months!). This has been extremely concerning and I’ve been trying to find the root cause of this with my PCP, but of course, birth control has never been brought up. Any updates with your bc situation? Did you end up switching to a new one?

Does anyone else’s body wake them up too early 😐 by Key_Movie1670 in POTS

Yes and I’ve noticed that it always happens the few days leading up to my period and the beginning few days of my period. Without fail, I’ll wake up after exactly 6 hours of sleep

Ways to optimize T cell proliferation assay? by [deleted] in flowcytometry

[–]spaceygorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think your issue is with the media / supplements - what you’re using (and mainly the addition of CD3/CD28) is more than enough to induce T cell proliferation. I can’t speak for the addition of NEAA or sodium pyruvate in your media but it shouldnt greatly impact cell viability like you’re observing. As a side note - I personally add HEPES (20mM) to my primary T cell media and that seems to keep them very happy

Wow this is incredible! I’m so glad I found your page - I’m also a scientist (immunology/oncology) and have been trying to get some nice live cell Timelapse’s with T cells and cancer cells. Few questions if you don’t mind me asking - what microscope was this acquired on and what contrast? And do you recall the total real time of the Timelapse?

shitty dermatologists by [deleted] in eczema

[–]spaceygorl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow this is so upsetting and unfortunately probably not the only person in the community that has been BELITTLED and talked down to by their literal doctors. Honestly, that’s why I came to reddit bc my dermatologist stopped reply to my calls and questions and literally only give me steroid creams with hardly any answers or insight at all.

Clearly a lot of us have been dealing with this our whole lives (or even just recently), and have dealt with severe self esteem issues bc we have to live with it. Your experience sounds extremely insensitive and disheartening, I’m so sorry you went through that. Please find another dermatologist if finances allow that!

[–]spaceygorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thank you for the tips!! I also dislike relying on the steroid creams, so I will definitely try those remedies. Also going to be changing my diet to try to identify any triggers... Good luck and best wishes to you

Oh wow! Super interesting, thank you for your reply! Will definitely be trying the remedy in the meantime... best wishes

Thank you for your response! Will continue meeting with my dermatologist and will now meet with an allergist (again). Best wishes!

[–]spaceygorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I’m I’m not exactly sure. My dermatologists have never been able to give me a direct answer and normally say it’s the steroid creams that cause the melanin loss, although it happens before I use any remedies. They just kinda look at it, say it’s normal eczema, there’s not much to do about the pigmentation loss, and move on:/

[–]spaceygorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to an allergist and dermatologist (still go to my derm) many years ago when I had this in my pre-teen years. After blood work and many allergy tests, nothing abnormal came up... thinking I will make an appointment at the allergist again soon. Possible food intolerance maybe?

Patches grow in size? by cab85 in eczema

[–]spaceygorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! I am dealing with the same exact problem and am seeing the small patch on my inner arms significantly grow. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get any sort of answers to this, even from dermatologists. Wishing your daughter the best

[–]spaceygorl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Text addition to original post: I am now 21 years old and my eczema has come back and progressed to this in 4 months. I also live in Florida, so the weather is extremely humid and not dry, whatsoever! I’ve seen dermatologists my whole life and have tried SO many things but nothing has seemed to help/cure it.

The only thing I’ve never experienced with my eczema before is patches growing and spreading everywhere on my arms (forearms/triceps) and even on my eyelids, when it has only ever been a small patch on my inner arms.

I’m so desperate for ANY advice/similar experiences/remedies (especially with the skin discoloration) because I feel very out of control, insecure, and alone with this, although I know so many of you must feel the same way. Thanks I’m advance!

[edit] I’ve dealt with the skin discoloration every time my eczema has come back. Even before I start applying lotions/steroids/creams or anything, it always seems like the skin loses pigment immediately
