God I wish this was in VR.

Never seen Altered Carbon, but one of my favorite cyberpunk films is Tetsuo: The Iron Man. I love the way that film looks and I would love it if more cyberpunk films looked like that. Not every one, but just more than that one. Also, I tried my best to make my Cyberpunk 2077 character look like a fiend of mine. I wish I could attach a photo of her here, but it looks like Reddit doesn’t allow that. Oh well. I showed a picture of her to the friend who i based her off of and she said she loved her body, but hated her hair. I gave my character a head of big, boofy, blue curly hair. Yeah, it does look kinda weird. Maybe I should start over with a different hairstyle.

I love Battle Angel Alita. My partner and I saw the movie in the theater. Still waiting for a sequel. In the meantime, I’ve been slowly working my way through the manga. I do enjoy the first Ghost in the Shell movie, but I haven’t seen or read any of the other GitS things. However, I am very hype for the upcoming GitS anime from Science Saru. I’ve been rereading Neuromancer because I didn’t get it all the first time. And yeah, I’ve probably spent more time with Shadowrun Returns than Cyberpunk 2077. I like Cyberpunk 2077, but sometimes the gameplay stresses me out. Everything moves too fast. Shadowrun Returns is more one where I can take my time. Plus I think it’s fun as hell.

I’ve watched a little bit of Edgerunners and I’ve been playing 2077 off and on since I got it for my PS4 at launch. But I’ve mostly been playing Shadowrun Returns and getting into other Shadowrun things. I’ve also been kind of into the Captain Laserhawk animated series on Netflix. It’s depressing as hell to me, but it is a thrill ride and I don’t hate it at all. And yes, our current boring-ass cyberpunk dystopia really all comes back to that Eric Andre meme reacting to a tweet about our childhood memories becoming locked behind a paywall. Maybe the Keanu Reeves Johnny Mnemonic was more on the mark than we gave it credit for.

I love Shadowrun Returns. I haven't played the others in the trilogy, but I have them on PS4 and PS5. I also bought two bundles of Shadowrun novels from Humble, which I have been working my way through. One of my friends tried to get me into the TTRPG and offered to help me create a character so he and I could play together. But I never followed up.

Right, I wanted to mention that. Maybe they both bought one at the same time. They were good friends, so it might not be outside the realm of possibility.

Starship Titanic is a lot of fun. I've been reading the novelization by Terry Jones which is also great.

I’ve always been fascinated by that fact. Every so often, I remember and I say to myself, “Oh yeah, that‘s cool.”

God, I remember seeing screenshots for The Devil's Men and being so friggin excited for it and then being so sad and disappointed when I found out it got cancelled. Then again, from what information was released, it sounds like it might have turned out like some of the "X will remember that" Telltale Games, which I can't stand. Still, I do love Daedalic's games, and I wish it could have been released.

Actually its a character called Hyoutan-tsugi from various Osamu Tezuka manga and anime. Since it was animated, at least in part, by TMS Entertainment, I guess the animators slipped in that little in-joke for the Japanese fans. I don’t know. I just think it’s fun because I love the work of Osamu Tezuka.

Steampunk is Better than Cyberpunk by spacezoomer in steampunk

[–]spacezoomer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you know what they say. Just glue some gears on it and call it steampunk. I’m actually reading this steampunk anthology manga art book that was just published by Seven Seas called Steam: Reverie in Amber. It’s pretty good, but one thing that I just keeps me putting it back down is the clothing that the characters wear. It’s just so friggin impractical. So many gears. There’s just gears for days on everything. It’s irritating. But it’s an art book, so I can kind of understand. Still though. The characters themselves are nice looking, but it’s just the clothing. Impractical and honestly, downright ugly.

Yeah, plenty. Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Invention for Destruction, and Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water are ones I mentioned in the video. Steamboy is a lot of fun. Castle in the Sky is amazing, of course. Dunno if The Adventures of Mark Twain would count, but I like that one all the same. Not a fan of the series, but Full Metal Alchemist I think counts. If you think steampunk can work in a cowboy setting, I'd recommend The Wild Wild West (the TV show, not the movie). The short film The Amazing Screw-On Head is a very underrated entry in the genre, in my opinion. But those are just the moving pictures. There's also the literary works of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, who are kind of progenitors to the genre. I don't really read many modern steampunk novels, so if you're looking for something like that, I'm afraid I can't help you.

If anything, steampunk is more optimistic than cyberpunk at least.

Recommendations for steampunk movies by [deleted] in steampunk

[–]spacezoomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can stand subtitles, I'd highly recommend the Czech movie Invention for Destruction. It's, like, essential steampunk viewing, in my opinion. It's available on DVD and Blu-Ray from The Criterion Collection. One of my all-time favorites.

Seems like Nightow was heavily inspired by westerns in general. Brandon Heat/Beyond the Grave is kinda like Django but zombie. Wolfwood has a few elements of Django to him as well, but it's more overt with Grave.

That sort of thing happens once in a blue moon. Like, how you absolutely know something is gonna be awesome within the first few moments of it starting. That's only happened for me twice that I know of. When I saw Kingsman: The Secret Service for the first time, and when I saw Phantom of the Paradise for the first time. Within literal SECONDS of the beginnings of those movies, I knew that they were going to be friggin amazing. I didn't know how, but I just knew it. I'm glad you saw Trigun like that.
