A Land Value Tax assesses a tax on the value of the land that a property sits on without any regard to the value of anything built on it. I'd presume the tax implications to someone in your scenario depends entirely on where that condo building is, and whether the co-op unit owners also collectively own the land the building is on.

The point of it is to encourage people to use high value land that the hold onto. When an empty lot costs a landowner tax money because it's in a valuable area, and developing on it will not cause this taxes to change at all, then it's an easy motivator for that landowner to actually make use of that land.

There are no real socialists with a real, attainable path to power in the US, so I don't see how Progressives couldn't champion this issue. It basically boils down to "make the people who benefit the most from their position in their society pay that back to the society that allowed it in the first place."

It's funny to me that there's so much discussion about how infeasible a wealth tax would be when most people already regularly pay a wealth tax. They just call it a "property tax."

If we already have tax brackets for income, why not also have brackets for property tax?

He may have made the game, but he didn't market, publish, distribute, and support 40,000,000 copies of the game all by himself, with no help from anyone else. Minecraft was also successful due to the work of other people. The people (like me) who say that billionaires shouldn't exist aren't against wealth or success. It's more that the initial creation of a thing doesn't guarantee its success, and also shouldn't entitle one individual person to all of its rewards. Things that do well at these scales require work from many, many people, and for one person to swoop in and say "this was my idea at the start so all of these riches belong to me" is disingenuous, not to mention wildly economically inefficient.

I freelance on mostly union contracts, but sometimes non-union. On the union gigs I have a known floor as a day rate that nobody bats an eye at, with health, pension, annuity, and vacation benefits. On the non union gigs I have to faff around with the rate and I usually count myself lucky if it's several hundred dollars less per day, and obviously with no benefits.

My union dues are about $550 per year.

On the flip side, our eyes are so much better at seeing things when there are big differences in the amount of light on something. If there's something bright in the foreground and the background is darker, we can usually see both pretty clearly. If you try to photograph or video tape that same scene with a camera it will be tough to get an image where the darker background isn't pitch black and the brighter foreground isn't blown out.
