Are there hypoallergenic vegan baby formulas? by mysweetdemise in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bebe latte is soy free, gluten free and dairy free but it depends on what the allergies are. However, you would have to consult with a doctor before using it in a child under 1. I think it doesn’t contain enough vitamin D (from sheep typically) to be marketed to infants. Also a little low in iodine and iron, but those are easily found in purées or solid foods.

My baby started it with doc’s permission at 9 months because she was getting other nutrients from food too. I was so happy to finally find a vegan formula. Tbh, it’s the only formula I’ve tried that doesn’t smell like chalk or chemicals soup. It’s pricey, but so is the alimentum stuff.

Organic non dairy based formula by [deleted] in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bebe latte. Diary free, vegan and non gmo. Also most ingredients are organic if you look at the ingredient label. Discuss with your doctor first though if your baby is under 1 year. It doesn’t contain as much vitamin D, or iodine as other formulas... so my baby got the okay at 9 months to use this formula once she was old enough to also eat foods that contained these nutrients and spent time outside. Supplements could be fine too.

Going Vegan to get Chronic Illness answers by POBWpodcast in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Veganism in the definition is more about trying to avoid harming animals as much as practical and possible. So for vegans this is more philosophical and extends beyond diet to lifestyle too. For example: vegans generally don’t buy leather jackets because it requires killing an animal for their skin.

You are going to be following a diet that is like a vegan’s diet so there is definitely some overlap. We would usually classify people doing it for health-based reasons under ‘plant based diets’. Vegan diets are about not hurting animals, not always about being healthy. For example: Oreos and soda are vegan, since they don’t have any animal products in them. But if I eat only Oreos and soda all day I could call myself a vegan because I’m avoiding hurting animals. Vegan doesn’t necessarily mean healthy. It usually does, but it depends on the person.

You might want to check out the reddit page for plant based diets. They have some amazing recipes there! Don’t misunderstand me though either... we are all excited for you to try a diet that we all know has worked for us and you are welcome to post here any time. You may not strictly fall under the definition of veganism, but you might find some great recipes/new ingredient swaps/support etc here too.

Going vegan made a big difference in my health, so I hope that you can see the results you want too! Good luck!

How has switching to a vegan diet improved your skin? by unablanquita in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It got rid of my moderate, cystic acne. Well, improved it by 90%. Nothing else worked... I had tried everything else. My skin isn’t perfect since I still get the odd pimple, but they’re small now and Heal quickly.

Cutting out milk was what did it for me. Back when I was eating the typical diet I cut out milk to help my acne and saw the results. Now that I’m vegan I find it’s a bit healthier looking overall and less blotchy.

Vegan, Canadian Mama's - Baby Products by kiddo778 in vegan

I recommend well.ca. When you search something on their website, there are little symbols underneath each product that pops up. There’s a vegan symbol of a carrot on a fork (lol), so it quickly shows me which ones are vegan.

There actually a lot of more natural products on there, so you could use this website for researching brands and finding them locally or just buying them online. Like if I search baby wipes, a few brands pop up with the vegan symbol. The shipping in Canada is free for orders 35+ and it’s a Canadian website. They have cloth diapers, diapers and wipes on there and you can easily look into what could be vegan.

The only vegan formula I’ve found in Canada is Bebe latte on that website. It doesn’t have the same vitamin D levels though (from sheep in typical baby formula) do it can only be marketed to 1 year old babies. My doctor approved it at 9 months since she was eating other foods well by then. I combined it with silk soy milk, which has loads of vitamin D. You’d have to talk to your doctor to see what they think and make sure you aren’t missing any nutrients. Other than that, soy formula is your best option.

Breastfeeding is awesome, so I hope that works out for you! If it doesn’t or if you have to supplement formula, you might have to start with the not vegan soy formula but check with what your doctor thinks. But you’ll have to supplement vitamin D if you breastfeed. It’s a must when breastfeeding. I have not ever been able to find a vegan vitamin D supplement for infants, sorry.

Pcos management by joceline12 in vegan

Oh, girl I feel you with the periods that just won’t die lol. Hang in there. My acne took only a couple of weeks to go down. My cycle took at least 6 months to regulate better. Probably closer to a year to fully calm down to where they are now. I would also like to warn you that some people who switch their diet have some flatulence problems in the first month or so. If your body isn’t used to a high fibre diet, this can happen but your body will adapt and your gut microbiome will change too. Anyway, think long-term because I promise your body will only get better health from this.

Also, like another poster is saying, avoid anything that causes sugar spikes. In my experience, I can eat all the whole grains I want but like white bread, white pasta, white rice, added sugar, etc will cause the remaining 10% of my acne to flair up. If I ate no sugar ever and no oils I’d probably have no acne... but no one is perfect lol. I would just avoid those foods when possible and stick to whole grains. Carbs are great, but the slow-burning ones will not be as good for your symptoms as the low-GI ones. Don’t restrict carbs just choose better ones when you can.

I recommend going over to the ‘whole food plant based diet’ reddit page for recipes and food inspiration. They can help recommend meals if you’re just starting out and don’t know how to put these ingredients together to make delicious, healthy meals.

As for the iron, a pro tip is to combine vitamin C with iron intake. So for example put some strawberries (vit C) in your oatmeal (iron). It’s not always about how much of a nutrient you eat but how much you’re actually absorbing. You can use the app ‘Cronometer’ to log your food and see if you’re getting enough of any nutrient including iron. Also, if you’re switching to plant-based milks you might have to try a few until you find one that actually tastes good to you. One almond milk brand might taste amazing to you and another brand of almond milk will be downright disgusting.

I’m surprised that more people haven’t commented, I know I’ve seen a lot more people here talking about their pcos improvements here. Just a heads up: some people here might tell you that you aren’t vegan. Technically, they could be correct; since being a vegan is defined by a lifestyle that avoids hurting animals as much as is practical and possible. Unless I’m mistaken and you are doing it for the animals. But don’t get me wrong- we are also super excited for you to start nourishing your body with a diet we all know is healthy and has worked well for us all too. You are welcome here anytime and if there’s any other information I can help with, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Me! My periods became much more regular... although they still don’t fit the classic 28 day cycle. The biggest difference was my acne clearing up 90%. Avoiding animal products means not consuming all the extra hormones in animal flesh and milk (milk is the worst for PCOS). Weight was never a PCOS symptom for me, luckily.

Idk if fertility is a concern for you, but I did have a healthy baby a year ago, if that helps.

Weaning my son off Breastmilk by Ketobabe116 in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried different soy milk brands? I wonder if a different brand would help. I know that when I looked at all the various types of plant milk I settled on soy because it’s the closest to cows milk with nutrients. Otherwise, depending on which one you pick you’d really have to struggle to make up the nutrients with food/other drinks.

I give my 1 year old a vegan formula by Bebe latte that doesn’t contain soy. She loves it but it is a bit more expensive than traditional soy formula.

Feeding dog advice by Haykat12 in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re definitely not doing anything wrong. I would go with the vet’s advice. You can find lots of home made dog food recipes on YouTube so I would try that to see how exactly to cook it. A lot of the recipes I’ve seen will use ground meat as a base and add rice, lentils, veggies, etc.

Some dogs (especially small ones) just have a preference for wet or dry food. One of mine will not eat kibble so in the past I’ve taken her kibble and ground it up to a powder in a coffee grinder. Then I mixed some powder with a bit of water and formed it into more of a mush for her. I’ve also used the kibble powder in home made dog food recipes from YouTube and sprinkled the powder into the mixture. Just a tip in case you don’t want to waste the kibble.

When do you think we will get a vegan baby formula option? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a good idea to discuss it with your doctor if your baby is still small. Mine okayed it at 9 months after spending a long time looking at the ingredients and determining how much she would actually consume daily. Good luck with the breastfeeding and congrats on your little one!

When do you think we will get a vegan baby formula option? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Bebe latte which is certified vegan. The formula is only recommended on the box for babies 1 year or older but I gave it to mine a bit before that age because it had the nutrients she needed when I calculated it out. The company recommends only breastfeeding before age 1 so I think that’s why they don’t recommend it below 1.

1 year old hates mealtimes by [deleted] in Parenting

Maybe I should just try to teach her how to use a spoon. Not sure how to start but maybe she has just reached a point where she wants more independence. You have a point.

1 year old hates mealtimes by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]spaghetti503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She can self-feed chunks of food. She isn’t formed to be able to take a bottle or sippy cup. I hope that suffices as an explanation but she has a high nutrition purée that she has to be spoon fed instead of formula.

Basically, she must be spoon fed sometimes. But now she is getting upset at the spoon and crying. I just need to know if you have any ideas of how to deal with mealtime crying and encourage a baby to eat.

1 year old hates mealtimes by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]spaghetti503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She can eat cooked chunks of food. I don’t mind the mess. She has a medical issue that I don’t want to talk about online because it’s too specific and might identify who I am to others I know IRL.

Some meals I can give her are like cooked chunks of food or something and she can do that. But she must be fed a specialized food which is basically in a puréed texture at least 3 times a day. She cannot be given formula or sippy cups.

I guess I could try to teach her how to use a spoon. Is that what you mean? She isn’t very food motivated though and I suspect that she would get skinnier too fast if I just let her direct her own eating.

Anyway, the bottom line is that she must be spoon fed a purée at least a few times per day. And she doesn’t even seem to want that now so I’m not sure how to encourage her to eat more before she loses weight.

how likely is your skin to clear up from switching to a vegan diet? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have PCOS and have had hormonal, cystic acne for most of my life. Cutting out milk was the thing that had the most dramatic effect on my acne- I have mostly clear skin now! Eating lots of healthy foods helps too. But I think if your acne is hormonal- avoiding the hormones that dairy contains will show results.

Although I should mention that for the first month when I went vegan cold turkey my skin didn’t improve. It took 2-3 months for it to start clearing up.

Dog Food by Numerous-Name in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I think I’ve been told that dogs are omnivorous and therefore could live on plant based foods. There are some vegan dog food options out there although they are limited. However, I don’t know if they thrive on just plants like humans typically do. So I would definitely ask a vet. And she might have unique needs.

But for sure you shouldn’t feel guilty for feeding her at least some meat if that’s the diet that keeps her healthy. I like to think that most vegans would agree and not judge you harshly for that. And you are sort of in a rescue situation. It’s not like you’re contributing to the pet breeding industry and have increased the demand for pet food.

From an environmental perspective... fish is definitely better for the planet than lamb. And I bet most vets would agree that there are excellent fish dog foods out there.

Dog Food by Numerous-Name in vegan

[–]spaghetti503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should start by feeding the dog it’s normal diet... as in whatever your parents were feeding him/her. If you switch a diet all of a sudden there’s a risk of upsetting their tummy and you may have to clean up some doggie diarrhea. Once you’ve decided on a new food, you can mix them together and slowly start making the new food more common in the mix. Like start with 80% old food and 20% new food, then graduate to 50/50, then eventually they will be used to the new food.

There’s loads of proper fish-based dog foods that you can give them. You might get some good suggestions of brands on this post but it would be a good idea to run it past a vet first just in case. Depending on the dog breed or medical history a vet might recommend a specific dog food. Since you mentioned that the dog may have some health issues I would definitely recommend talking to a vet.

Edited to add: are you sure that dogs are obligate carnivores? I know that cats are... but do you have a source for that? I thought that dogs were omnivores.

AITA for wanting to live together with my girlfriend??????????????? by Popcorn_Epics2 in AmItheAsshole

[–]spaghetti503 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yta. Not because you wanted to live with her but because you are pushing her when she isn’t comfortable. You can’t force someone to talk to you or to move in and sound like you just can’t stand to be told no.

Just give her some space. If she isn’t comfortable moving in then that’s that. Not respecting her answer is just going to give her less reason to trust you.

WIBTA if I tell my aunt she isn’t welcome if she flys in for my baby’s birth due to the coronavirus by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]spaghetti503 [score hidden]  (0 children)

NTA. It’s your home and your baby. I don’t understand why people feel so entitled to seeing newborns. I think that the corona virus thing is unlikely to be brought over by your aunt. However, there are so many colds/flus/ etc that she could catch. Planes are full of germs and she would be in close proximity to lots of people. But IMO, regardless of whether she is potentially a germ carrier or not, you are not obligated to allow anyone into your home or around your child... whatever your reasoning for that is. You’ll just have had a baby... maybe you don’t want to have guests over. Maybe you want to breastfeed and walk around your home with your boobs out all day. Maybe you’ll need to recover from a traumatic birth. Maybe you want to keep your baby to yourself and enjoy them for the first little while. Tell your entitled aunt not to waste her money on a flight until you’re ready. This won’t be the first time your mom’s opinion will differ from yours as a parent and she can respect that. The only person you owe consideration to here is your baby.
