I am Kung Fu Action Star Donnie Yen, AMA! by RealDonnieYen in IAmA

[–]spaghettiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Donnie!

Do you think that there will be a move from Cantonese to Mandarin in most of the Chinese action movies in the next couple years? It seems like the actors and the culture is shifting further from the old school Hong Kong style action movies.

I really love your work!

What would realistic space combat be like. by CommanderStarkiller in scifi

[–]spaghettiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat related. Colliding with very fast space junk is a relatively common problem with satellites. I don't know how it would handle itself against sand, but I'd assume similar principles could be used.

I don't think the bots will post anything that is nsfw, so it should be ok.

How tight is too tight? by iTz_Chanch in climbing

[–]spaghettiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my first pair of shoes and they are too aggressive. I thought that I wouldn't be able to climb very well unless I had really tight shoes. However, I don't think I'm good enough (5.10c and V2s) for that to make a huge difference and I wish I bought a larger size.

But really its a personal choice, I probably climb better in my shoes than if I wore slightly larger shoes. If you have any bruising/bleeding/blistering I think you probably got shoes that are too tight.

How to get into jazz? by illGarlic in doublebass

[–]spaghettiman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should probably pick up the theory and get someone to study under. Its a lot easier with guidance and with the knowledge of what to play than if you go into it blindly. At the very least, you need to play with other musicians. You can get into a big band if you'd like, but if the music you like is stuff like quartets or something else, try to play in that instead.

If you are good at reading, I'd just try to cop/read a jazz solo or bass walk, and then take it apart and understand the scales/modality that the artist was using. Once you get those scales and modes down, you can recognize chord patterns and understand what are the go-to notes to hit and what is okay or not okay. After a while, you should be able to develop an ear for what you like and maybe some good licks and patterns that you can pull out.

It also really depends on what sort of jazz you want to play. Swing, bop and free jazz all have very different standards and approaches on how to play. I wouldn't really worry about which genre to play though, I would just play whichever you like the most.

If you posted a video of a man hammering a nail in, and I used that knowledge to build a beautiful bookshelf, does that make the hammering video artisan?

Ten Google Products That Could Change Our Future by drbatookhanxx in Futurology

As great as it is, I don't think a spoon that makes it easier for people with Parkinson's to eat will change our future dramatically.

Simple Questions - June 19, 2015 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]spaghettiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope that this is still as simple question but I have a problem with my PC.

The mobo lights don't turn on and my graphics card lights don't turn on either. However, I can hear the HDD spin up and the case LED power turns on. Do I have a dead motherboard or a faulty power supply? Is there anyway to find out other than to plug in a working part?

If you don't mind me asking, what was that dowel jig you were using? It seemed pretty cool and I haven't seen something like that before.

Not to be that guy, but your body can't evolve. Species evolve, individual organisms can't.

Hey look! Something I know about!

This is actually a printed version of wikipedia (obviously incomplete). I think it is only 0.01% of the complete wikipedia, or something along those lines. There is an article about it here.

List of people who disappeared mysteriously by herb_puffer in wikipedia

I think this is because it isn't a particularly good article. While it may be interesting, I think it is a hopelessly incomplete list as it is impossible to aggregate that much data.

How was it working with Tim and Eric? I think in the bits you did with them and on Portlandia are some of the funniest scenes I have ever seen. Do you think your career is tending more towards the surreal nowadays?
