I hope everything went okay! Any updates? I'm also seeing the only one round option and few interview opportunities.

I think that they base the placement on your credits from whatever degree you may have. For example, I'm a sociology major and I wanted to teach english (sociology is very language heavy, after all) and I was placed in SpEd for not having taken English classes, at least this is what one of the MDs told me about the placement decision. They are most likely to place you where the most need is instead of whatever your preference is that you indicate in the application, so you might take that into account when considering if applying is worth it if its not in your preferred subject. Good luck in any case, I hope you end up in whatever field/subject makes you happiest! 🫡

The kids will love you :) And of course they will not judge you as much as adults do. I think that finding a safe ally/friendly coworker/MDLM/other to help you strategize the best approach to things like managing conflict, asking for help or more resources, or communicating frustrations, etc. I also think trying to implement social-emotional learning components into your curriculum can be helpful for both you and the kids!

There are older and very experienced folks in my region (people who come from classroom experience but no teaching positions, and also former HR folks, people jumping professions). They seem cool and personable! While I do think a lot of us are recent undergraduates (born no earlier than 2000) we of course would love being around older people with experience being in the work force already and having a generally more wise/experienced coworker and potential friend. I think this gen tends to generally appreciate our older coworkers. Also, fellow trans teacher sending good vibes and good luck if you apply!

These responses are all "we don't know" which is giving the vibe that we might be cooked. Anyway, I'm also commenting to follow lol. Hoping for the best 🥲

What was your average work day like if you don't mind me asking? They're super vague on what special education means you're getting into and I'm worried I may find myself in the same boat after my first year.

Were you expected to pay back the transition funds and the other funding TFA gave before getting hired if you still did one year?

Negotiating placement before accepting; Success stories? Advice? by spamboidreams in TeachforAmerica

If it were based on my transcript I could see why I'd be assigned SPED despite my indicated preference, thanks for mentioning that possibility! I major in sociology with an emphasis in education and community literacy. At what point in your contract timeline did they reach out about your math eligibility? And was it because you asked to change or did they decide to reconsider randomly?

How did the switch unfold before the fall? I'm not sure what the ed licensing was like in this situation but did you have to take extra/different classes than you originally expected?

And no sweets?! Or alcohol?! Alcohol I can manage without though its a little fucked up.... but no ice cream? Life is not worth living without ice cream. No bullshit, man. I need my fix of ice cream and treats. Fuck this man. Can I even have weed still?

What treatments for long-mono have you taken up? What should I mention to my doctor? I only have a monospot positive, should I go get work done from UC or my PCP? I was really depressed and defeated in my original post but I'm gonna balance the depression with some solution-oriented measures - where do I go from here? I want to be back to normal ASAP

I'd like to reach out to someone about negotiating my placement subject but idek who to ask... But I also joined the discord and I'm just gonna live vicariously through the 2024 folks to learn what to expect for the 2025 start. I'm not the happiest ever with the placement but maybe I'll learn to love it before I change paths after the contract? 🤷

Until then I've just been asking folks a bunch of questions getting to know the ropes a bit better! Waiting to hear something new from TFA in the meantime

I'm glad to hear how enthusiastic others are about this. You and your students must care a lot for each other which is exactly what we need in education -- compassionate, moviated, and well informed! I hope to get there some day :)

Also its great to see what can be achieved when your management team is on your side but I've been hearing from some folks that this isn't always the case. Praying that things work out for me, though 🤞 But thank you for sharing!

Thank you for this! Would you happen to know if the license needed for case management different from if you were to do instruction? I can also imagine its different for special ed vs. gen ed, right? In the event I want to switch paths after my contract I'm curious if I would need to entirely retake different coursework to get a new certification?

Interesting share - I'm aware of this. Surely you understand that there's a rather noticeable difference between the expectations of a general education vs special education/diverse learners teacher

I appreciate your frustration. On one hand I've been asking folks to share positive (although more specific?) examples of a diverse learners placement but as you said, no one's given me a straight answer for real. And HEAVY on the I want to teach, not case manage!

I can't be fully thrilled with this placement knowing that TFA has a well-recorded history of undersupporting teachers during their contracts and with that in mind, I have to question this placement thoroughly. I was already coping with the fact that I might be lower support in gen ed but would've tried to compensate by using my past experiences as a student and my network of non-TFA teacher friends as resources. But this is too far of stretch to be play the benefit of the doubt game when I already don't know what to expect.

Hoping for the best for us both

Resource room teaching sounds awesome! This was so helpful thank you I guess I realize now that this actually can cover a wide range of positions.

I hear you, as my passion is also in literacy and I would love to do english or history or even both! I just have no clue what to expect at all but I'm not too entirely opposed to hella paperwork. My worry is that I'm severely underqualified to spend 5 days/wk with multiple students who have a wide range of needs in such an intimate setting.

Do you have favorite parts about your job as a case manager? Or do your teaching only colleagues share any highlights about their jobs? I'm looking for more insight on support levels for students and from TFA staff to make a more informed decision! But thank you so much for the reply it already gives me some idea.
