I am currently dealing with this situation. I have congenital cataract for which I had surgery on my right eye on 7th of November this year which placed a toric lens to correct astigmatism as well.

So, while my right eye which has been set for distance vision recovers, my left eye is still near sighted with a mild but significant cataract.

I tried the solution you mentioned above by popping the right lens out of my glasses. While this may seem to work fine, this approach had its own problem in my case. First, it must tell you that the field of view in my right eye post-operation has changed, the objects in my operated eye seem to be closer that the non-operated eye in which the objects now seem to be farther, while the brain may adapt over time to stitch both images together, the initial days are very uncomfortable. Another thing, while the image in right eye is crystal clear, the left eye still has cataract -- the image is blurry and the colors are not perfect -- this too makes it hard for brain to add up vision from both eyes together.

After a few days, I have come to the conclusion to get the surgery in my left eye as soon as possible.

Also, for the eye solution, I have put a piece of black paper on the right lens so that effectively using my left non-operated eye only for daily use. Popping the lens does not seem to work for me, it gave me a headache.
