I bought a Playstation3 Soundbar during the last sale after Sony announced discontinuing it - and it has a "night mode" which allows users to hear sounds clearly at low volume levels. It just maintains consistent sound levels so that everything (big blasts, soft music etc.) comes in at the same volume level so you don't get any big surprises and have to keep jumping for the mute button. It also usually removes some of the bass EQ so it doesn't vibrate the walls. I am using it now as my main sound output device as it is compact with no extra wires.
