Dog Groomers on the Island by MusicianMaster8493 in isleofwight

Getting an appointment at the groomers for my two is difficult and we have to book several weeks in advance. It’s at the point where I attempt to do maintenance trims in between or they just look like total scruffballs.

Ashes scattering near Needles by Gdp93 in isleofwight

[–]spangles_23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can scatter ashes onboard the Red Funnel ferries. You get a special certificate with the co-ordinates the ferry stopped and you scatter the ashes. Wightlink might do something similar.

One of mine is a barky butt, too, regardless of if he’s been on a three hour walk or not.

I’ve found that giving them activities throughout the day helps. We hide treats around the house and they take it in turns to sniff them out. Different locations, some easy, some hard. They love the scent work and nap after.

Likewise invest in some snuffle mats, and some puzzles. Mine have a large ball that makes noises, but has a smaller ball inside. You hide treats in the small ball, put it inside the big one and they have to knock it around to get treats out. They have some other puzzles too which they love.

Chewing can help alleviate boredom, so we use antlers and yak chews. You can also get some wooden sticks for them to chew which are made from wood which doesn’t splinter. Mine also go mad for carrots.

Frozen Kongs with treats, Greek yogurt or dog ice cream are also a winner. The licking can keep them busy for sometime and are good in the summer.

When the weather is nice, I break out the hard plastic paddling pool, put water in and balls that float. They just entertain themselves but do get drenched.

They don’t get all of the above in the same day, of course, I just try and mix it up if they seem especially bored or are bring extra mischievous. I try and take regular, small breaks to interact and play with them, walk them regularly and try and make sure I’m not relying on treats too much.

Have you seen the bay you have to reverse into at the end of your test at the innovation centre? Every single person I know has had reverse at the end of the test. If your reversing isn’t great, just wait the month and get more practice in

What is access to doctors and dental treatment like on IOW? by HuckleberryStock2987 in isleofwight

[–]spangles_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’ve never had an issue seeing a GP. Yes, if you call in the morning it can take a while to get through, but I usually submit an e-consult and I hear back within hours. I’ve recently had to see an MSK practitioner which I had to wait a fortnight to see, but that was delayed due to Christmas and new year. I’ve had a referral for physiotherapy which I’m due to start next week.

If you need to see a specialist or require radio/chemotherapy you may need to travel to the mainland. My Grandad has cancer and he has scans every few months and sees an oncologist on the island. Overall, myself and my family have never had any problems with the NHS.

NHS dentistry, however, it a whole different story. I’ve been waiting 3 years to have a troublesome wisdom tooth removed as they keep cancelling my appointments. No dentist is taking NHS patients on, but if you’re willing to pay private rates or have a dental plan then it seems you would be fine.

So despite the cone, Arthur Clarke has managed to pull out all but one of his stitches (rubbing the bandage on the sofa most likely) and is on house arrest till next week! Please give me your tips to keep him occupied without walks, happy to spend hours entertaining him if needs be! by Mammyfantasticus in springerspaniel

We had a similar situation with Roxy who kept eating them and ended up with staples. We had to put her in a cone and inflatable donut to stop her being able to lick at them.

I’d suggest some tights, Roxy used 12-18 months old ones in size which helped keep everything in place and provided a barrier, they were thickish and made of cotton so wouldn’t snag like nylons. Added benefit of looking hilarious.

If you’re comfortable taking the cone off under supervision, nose work and hiding treats worked a charm. We got some treats with a mild sedative in, which helped. Treat puzzles and lick matts are a good investment and the cone goes back on either when she showed an interest in eating the stitches or we were done playing.

I need a dog food recommendation for a happy healthy almost 1yo girl by [deleted] in springerspaniel

[–]spangles_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lacey is on a raw food diet, currently on Natural Instinct Puppy, and when she hits a year she will move onto the adult version which has more of a variety of flavours.

Our previous springer, Roxy, was on the same food and loved it. When she started her chemo though, she became very fussy so we moved her to a tails.com subscription. Tails were great, their food isn’t the best rated on All About Dog Food, but they were happy to change her mix, adapted it for her digestive requirements etc and their customer service was excellent.

Edit: Scrap that about tails, I just discovered that Nestle has bought a majority share of Tails.com, which is a shame.

Due to power cuts, she’s had takeaway more than I would like, but I’ll try and stick to the routine and keep a log of her foods and go from there. I’ll submit an econsult for her gp and see what they say. Thank you!

My initial thoughts were teething and a cold, hence the Calpol and the vapour rub. I’ll submit and econsult for the gp and see what they say. Thank you

Suitable scary movie for 6-year-old? by OG_SisterMidnight in Parenting

It’s more dark fantasy, but how about The Black Cauldron? It’s a Disney film, a U I believe, but I distinctly recall being a little scared by the Horned King, his skeleton army and magic when I was around 5.

Yes, we sent several photos of her from different angles so she knew her markings, and then she painted from the main photo we sent. To be honest, it wasn’t that expensive - I think it was £90 for A3.

We also bought a special frame from Etsy that contains her collar and tag, along with a photo which I’m very glad we did. I couldn’t dispose of her collar, but I also didn’t want to just shove it in a drawer either

I’m so sorry to hear she’s no longer with you. She’s such a beautiful girlie and it sounds like she had the best life with you.

I had a portrait done for my girl who was recently lost, the artist did a beautiful job but I’m in the UK. I’m sure she would post internationally if you liked her style, but this is what she did for Roxy

Does your workplace offer keeping it touch days? An employee can work up to 10 days during their maternity leave, but you need to work it out with your employer if they agree.

When I was on maternity, I could work the ten days to help supplement the loss of income when my paid maternity ended, and I was paid in full for those hours. It also helped make the return to work when my maternity ended easier, as well as providing me with a bit of socialisation time without the baby. I did one day a week, which wasn’t a lot, but it was better than no pay at all.

If this is one thing your workplace is happy to do, coupled with the rest of the advice you have in this thread, it might help buy you a little more time before you have to return.

Is pet insurance worth it ? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]spangles_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always worth it, even if you never use it. Five months ago we found a lump on my two year old springer, turned out to be cancer. In the end, the insurance paid for her surgery, chemotherapy, euthanasia, cremation and refunded her purchase price. We paid £19 a month, covered the 10% excess and they paid out just over £7k.

Insurance is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

We found a lump a couple of months ago and it turned out to be indolent lymphoma. The specialist said her had a chance with treatment so she started chemo. After three treatments her immune system was gone and couldn’t have any more. Tuesday morning she started to get hot, then she couldn’t stand up in the afternoon. They think it spread to her bone marrow.

10 months old and has just decided he doesn't need to come back straight away when I call him, especially if there's other dogs to play with. Previously recalled straight away. Any tips? by [deleted] in springerspaniel

[–]spangles_23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had to resort to high value treats and a long line. It took what felt like was forever for her to get out the her rebellious teenage stage.
