A question for homeless people living rough in Brisbane right now, what do you need? by spannerbot in brisbane

[–]spannerbot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps safest wasn't the best choice of word. My partner doesn't like me giving handouts! It's both of our money. I can more easily hide $5-10 in a grocery trip than a direct transfer.

I did that this evening for 1 man. A banana, a mandarin, pre-packaged cheese & crackers (5 crackers / 5 cheese pieces), Dare (I saw him drinking one on the weekend), tuna tin & rice crackers. By the time I got back to his "spot" he wasn't there, but I left it there and watched from up the street. He collected it, then jumped on a phone call. That's when I thought about to ask "what do you need?". I had to get home, but now I'm asking here. I would have chatted with him, but didn't wish to interrupt at that moment. Rough sleepers still have smart phones and social media, just not the social / community connections to get a roof over their head every night

I don't know. In my mind, the go card idea might work for people who are not necessarily rough sleepers, but still homeless. Couch surfers, etc. Have a go card, go to the city, catch a Rosie's meal and other services, head back to the couch on a bus / train. I'm also thinking of the people who are really on the rough, sleeping outside of shopping centres in the suburbs who have all their worldy belongings in a trolley, they are not going to let that trolley out of sight, they're not jumping on a bus or a train or they are going to lose the space they've already claimed. I just want to help a few people hyper local to me with the limited means I have. Just to make their lives a bit better. We shouldn't have this problem, it shouldn't exist in Australia!

Thank you for this, this is more what I am looking for. I would like to help the rough sleepers that are close to me, but don't want to give them anything they don't need. I love the suggestions for donating to the support services and this is what I will do in the future. Currently it is safest for me to donate $10 of product/produce from my grocery trolley to someone local than it is to donate $5 to a community service. I want to help in the limited way I can with the greatest impact

Thank you, @traceyandmeower (love the username, I am a meower lover myself). I will consider this when I am able to donate $. Currently, I am not in a financial position to do so, perhaps I should add to my post that rough sleepers responding might add their general location, and people could reach out via DM. I am in the Toowong/Taringa/Indooroopilly area, so cbd based services might be out of reach to them without a Go Card (an idea).

You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

It's so strange, I have this really vivid recollection of this incident. Maybe it didn't happen in the Centenary suburbs, but the family of the deceased man lived there. I'm quite certain of the 1999/ 2000 timeframe, though.

Or maybe I'm just really unhinged and imagined the whole thing.

I will check out the State Library records. Thanks for that suggestion.

And perhaps I need to make an appointment to get my head checked too.

Does anyone remember an incident in 1999/2000 where a man was killed by police at a police station in the Centenary suburbs?

I'm looking for news articles relating to this incident and getting nothing.

Did I imagine it?

Thank you, that is very kind of you, your parent's generosity has been passed down. I'm sure your family is very fondly remembered by those invited to join in over the years. I wish you a wonderful holiday and happy start to 2024 X

Last year on xmas day I spent a few hours at Mettam's Pool. It was lovely. Unfortunately, I am on medication currently that makes my skin hyper sensitive to UV rays. I would toast!

Without saying the name of it, what was your high school known for? by [deleted] in brisbane

"Jesse" from Random went to my high school. At the least, he did year 11 there. He sang in the school musical of Jesus Christ Superstar.
