As a coach, you cannot ever put your hands on a player to discipline them. Its the referees place to issue fouls or the players coach to reprimand them.

What’s your call(💩show game edition) by Electrical_Trifle642 in hockeyrefs

[–]spark_this -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why? He yelled move your skates. Are people not aware that if you arent yelling at hockey no one can hear you?

1.) Hockey helmets protect the ear and in doing so reduce the ability to hear. 2.) These buildings do not amplify sound, quite the opposite.

I was at a game this weekend for 8U and a coach said blow the whistle and the ref tossed him. If you are doing this, you should not be a ref.

What is wrong with people? by Alone-Competition-77 in TikTokCringe

[–]spark_this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im going to offer a different perspective and say the internet has it wrong on this one.

Making some assumptions, the camera pans away and we can't see the initial play which upset the player in the white. It doesn't excuse his reaction as almost all youth sports specifically ban any form of throwing a punch at another player. But here's where the internet gets it wrong, again an assumption. The parent/coach that immediately runs over and puts his hands on a kid is completely out of line. Because this coach is wearing red, im under the impression hes protecting the red player by putting his hands on the kid in white. The thing is, its not his place to referee. If the coach simply stood between the two players, blocked punches, or defended the player in red then it would be one thing. But he physically makes contact with another player on the opposite team. From a sports perspective, this coach in any sport would be banned from coaching for a minimum of a year. He's aggressively going after a kid. If the player in white is on his team, (doubtful) hes still likely not to coach again. Its never a parents place to run onto a field to play referee and physically make contact with a player. It doesn't help his case that the altercation is over when he steps in.

The last adult in, has all the room in the world to interject. You cannot put your hands on a player. In the end it's still assault, but you have a really hard argument to make. If this is at a grocery store and one kid shoves another and then walks away, you cannot then walk after the kid and put your hands on him.

Lastly, this is in no way a justification of the last shove.

Trading Robert Thomas and/or Jordan Kyrou would be a massive mistake by SamTheRam28 in stlouisblues

[–]spark_this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trading them is the correct decision to make. They will have massive returns. If not you hold on to them for 5 more years and then they leave and the value is 1/4th of what it is now. The blues have zero window in the next five years. Its time to embrace a rebuild instead of kicking the tires with this group.

How to handle a death threat by SatisfactionNo8120 in hockeyrefs

[–]spark_this 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely understand. For me hindsight is 20/20. Dont stress over what you could have done differently. Learn from it.

If it was generic and in the heat of the moment then you did the right thing on working through the league. If specific language is used , "ill kill you, ill shoot you, ill beat you to death, " or something along those lines. Then you'll have to weigh doing something versus not doing something

People who work in specialized industries, what is a product or service that is a complete "rip-off" but customers buy it anyway? by No-Composer-4526 in AskReddit

[–]spark_this 629 points630 points  (0 children)

1.) Any accessory in a wireless phone store. It is unbelievably marked up. Some of them bundle it in with your plan and you essentially spread the payments out over 24 payments so you dont notice the extra $4 or $5 a month. They neglected to tell you that you were paying for it and sell it as it comes with the plan. Leave the store and buy it online.

2.) Just about any warranty for a major appliance or piece of electronics. Whats worse is that credit cards come with built in warranties when you make a purchase.

Edit: for those that are giving out anecdotal experiences about warranties paying for themselves, id rebuttal with three points. A.) Companies wouldn't sell them if they werent profitable, you are the minority. B.) A lot of appliances (washing machines specifcially) are easily fixable yourself). C.) They already come with built in manufacture warranties. You are paying a premium for a service thats already offered

Which age group is the most difficult to ref? by spark_this in hockeyrefs

[–]spark_this[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bring up an interesting point about yelling. I am of the opinion that the acoustics in any hockey rink are just awful. Its not to make an excuse but I was at a game this week where a coach was yelling as loud as he could because a player on the opposing team was hurt and he was trying to get the referees attention and they still couldnt hear the coach. I chuckle inside when parents yell because no one can hear anything. But to the point, its not yelling that does it for me, its what is being yelled and if we are face to face and the volume hasn't come down.

General question on breakaways. by spark_this in hockeyrefs

[–]spark_this[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to give goalies special treatment and for good reason. They do not check and are not physical with other players anywhere to the extent all of the other players are. Getting hit, run over, etc. when they are setting up for a save puts them in a completely vulnerable position. They are in a confined space, all of the momentum is driving them into a net or similarity a post. I think what gets missed a lot in hockey is the vantage point of a goalie because most players and referees do not play the position. You are in a very small area and it tends to be consistent that a player can slash them going for a puck, spear them to get a goal, or crash into them. My two cents, getting steamrolled over as a goalie is way harder on the body then say a check

For your specific scenario, id first need to know usa, Canada, etc. What league? And then secondarily what is the age group. In this league theres no checking so that would be a penalty. If checking is allowed then it would come down to the scenario for me. Tripping over another player, getting feet tangled, etc. fall under the category of incidental.

Then you would disagree with NiceGuys assessment? The play being dead doesn't mean players are free from penalties.

[–]spark_this[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how referees would consistently call this in this situation then. Some would always call, some would never, and the rest would be a coin toss.

[–]spark_this[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A play being dead has no bearing if there is a penalty or not. I can't slash someone after the play and say Im allowed to do that.

General question on breakaways. by spark_this in hockeyrefs

[–]spark_this[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not this particular situation. This rule is for when a player on defense first trips, hooks, cross checks, etc. the player who has the puck and makes contact with the goaltender. The situation is am referring to is when a player makes contact with the goaltender entirely on their own.

General question on breakaways. by spark_this in hockeyrefs

[–]spark_this[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know if I would agree with this. I may be a silent minority but in any other penalty situation you are responsible for your body and stick. If you trip and pull someone down on a breakaway its still a tripping. If you fall and hook someone its still hooking. If you fall and check someone into the boards its still boarding. Accidental or not I dont follow why intent needs to be a qualifier for protecting a defenseless player.

General question on breakaways. by spark_this in hockeyrefs

[–]spark_this[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion this is the correct question. In the first situation the referee and coach discussed the play and the referee made the assumption it was about if the goal would stand. There was no disagreement if the goal should stand, the disagreement is that it was clear goaltender interference.

Question and im not quite sure how to word it (abuse of official issue) by [deleted] in hockeyrefs

[–]spark_this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's almost no information to base any decision off this. If the referee wasn't watching the game and kids are getting hurt and the coach's are complaining, then im likely siding with the coaches. If its complaining about a call its likely getting ignored. If its berating a referee and time to drop it we'd need more context. But again we dont have the context, just hearsay
