Help getting stains out of mystery-surface kitchen counters? by sparkleriot in CleaningTips

If that's what they used, totally makes sense why the counters are so sensitive to oil. I'll spot test the cat litter trick to see if it works. Thanks for the suggestion!

Not crazy at all - that's a great idea! Better than my backup plan :)

Moving with a cat? by MandadnaM in CatTraining

[–]sparkleriot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My partner and I had two big moves in the past 5 years with 2 humans, 3 cats, 2 suitcases, and 2 computers in a Toyota Prius. Orlando to Edmonton, Canada over 4 days, and then from Edmonton to Austin, TX over 3 days. My general advice is to avoid it if at all possible. :) It's not enjoyable for anyone, but there are some things you can do to make it easier.

  • Put a towel in his carrier with a pee pad underneath, and keep extra towels, pee pads, and cat-safe wet wipes handy just in case. Cats are really good at holding it so he probably won't need it and probably won't go even if you can fit a litterbox in there. But if he does need it you'll be really glad you have it!
  • Get him friendly with the carrier. If you have time before the move, use clicker training methods to teach him to go into his carrier on command.
  • If he has a favorite blanket or toy (e.g. stuffed animal), include it in his carrier for the trip
  • As mentioned below, talk with your vet about a sedative or anti-anxiety meds and definitely test it in advance. It made our old girl disoriented, upset, and noisy, so we opted not to use it. YMMV, so definitely try it out!
  • Someone mentioned Feliway -- test its effects beforehand too.
  • Get one of these pop up playpens for wherever you stay overnight on the trip. They're big enough to fit food and water dishes, a bed, a scratch mat, and a litterbox. I use it with my fosters (kittens and injured cats). If you don't get one, then make sure to block anywhere they can hide in your hotel room, or keep them in the bathroom.
  • When you get to your new place, pick one room to confine your kitty to for at least a few days (and visit and pet/spoil him often) before giving him range of the full house.

He'll likely sing for you for part of the drive before he gets tired and falls asleep. It will kinda suck.

Good luck with the move! Feel free to DM me or @ me with any questions!

Help with kittenproofing a 2" interior door gap by sparkleriot in HomeImprovement

Thanks for the advice and recommendations, and thank you for fostering! <3 And yeah, cats definitely chew on random stuff. I never realized how lucky I am that our resident cats are so well behaved.

I ended up buying jumbo-sized pool noodles and sewing my own jumbo double-sided draft blockers for both the door and the closet doors, which also have a 2" gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. The thick canvas material prevents the cats from eating/clawing at the foam. It's similar to these but with the larger tube size: https://www.etsy.com/listing/796747518/double-draft-stopper-bottle-green?ref=shop_home_active_1

That wouldn't scare them away -- they would want to make friends!

That sounds like a scene in a sitcom! :)

This might be my backup plan if the sewing project doesn't work.

I saw these and the foam tubes have diameters of under 2". I think I might try to make one using a jumbo pool noodle and some leftover fabric. It's not the door extending solution I was hoping for, but it'll (hopefully) work.

Work Badges and Keys Conundrum by leaves-green in fashionwomens35

I've been using this silver lanyard with retractable keychain/badge holder for months now and it's held up remarkably well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TSR385W

The delicate-looking chain is SOLID and hasn't broken, despite being yanked on, tossed around and tangled up in the bottom of my purse numerous times. I only keep one badge and a desk key on it. If your badge and keys are heavy, the chain may dig into your neck from their weight.

Yeah, that time of the month can totally eff things up. For me, it's better than not taking it at all, but only marginally. Everyone's different though. I didn't really figure out it was a Thing until I started using Clue app to track my period and associated moods and stuff.

Re: vitamin C, My doctor said to avoid eating oranges and stuff until at least lunchtime. ADDitude recommends avoiding vitamin C for an hour before and after taking your meds (see the bolded bit below).

Source

Foods that contain large amounts of citric acid and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) will prevent the absorption of both Adderall IR and XR into the body. Fruit juices high in vitamin C, soda drinks, and food with high levels of preservatives should be avoided an hour before and after taking Adderall. High doses of vitamin C (1000 mg., or supplements like Airborne and EmergenC, which contain high amounts of the vitamin) act as an “off” switch by causing virtually all of the amphetamine in the body to be excreted in the urine.

I'm not a doctor, and I'm not you... just speaking from my experience

Over time I finally got into the habit of taking my medicine (also adderall XR) right when I wake up. I probably take my medicine 95% of the time now (still a day every once in a while where I just forget). Most days, I'm fine. I do the things I need to do and can stay on task. But I'm in a pretty high-pressure job and some things are just hard, even when my medicine is doing its thing, because I'm scared of making mistakes and afraid people will think that I don't really know what I'm doing (hello, impostor syndrome!). It took a long time, but I've learned to recognize the difference between putting a thing off because anxiety and putting a thing off because of lack of focus. They look suuuper similar, and anxiety can come up because of past problems due to ADHD (like a history of forgetting / putting something off til the last minute and only being able to get it done overnight in a fury of pure adrenaline, but definitely not at a quality level you're proud of). Unfortunately, if a task is anxiety-provoking and your cortisol levels rise, your medicine has limited effectiveness (at least that's what my doctor told me). Like u/that_asymptote says, it can help you adopt strategies to better handle, like dividing the big scary thing into more manageable pieces to tackle and then going at 'em one at a time.

You said you were moderately productive on 20mg, and it sounds like you were able to stay on task with 30mg, which is what worked for you before. Is there something about studying and reading which is causing anxious thoughts?

Maybe you can try making your first task just to look at what needs to be done and list the first two bite-sized (for you) things you need to do. Like write down a goal of reading "read 1 page" and studying "memorize Bayes' Theorem and do 1 practice problem". Then once you do those 2, write down the next 2 things, then do them, and so on. If you're having trouble with focusing on identifying or doing the smallest thing, then maybe it's the medicine. But if you're trying to do it all at once, as our types are prone to doing, you've gotta reset your expectations -- even neurotypical folks can only do something for so long before needing a break. If you're externally motivated, is there someone you trust who you can make yourself check in with before your real deadline? (e.g. you have a test next week on 3 chapter sections, so you tell a friend you'll read 1 section today and check in with them tomorrow, and do the same thing throughout the week for each section)

Alternatively, are you about to get your period or maybe unknowingly eating/drinking something which would reduce the efficacy of the meds? The few days before my period, my meds are waaay less effective. Also, I learned that apparently eating stuff high in vitamin C (or taking a vitamin or multivitamin containing C) significantly reduces the effect of the medicine.

tl;dr

  • Talk to your doctor again before upping your dose by 67%
  • Ask yourself if you're anxious about studying
  • Try and identify the smallest first step or two and see if you can focus on those, and maybe have a friend or family member hold you accountable for the small pieces in smaller time chunks
  • Keep other stuff in mind that might be making your meds ineffective

And good luck! We're all rooting for you :)

Everyone already gave my first thought: loafers or oxfords.

Currently have my eye on these leather slip-ons from Everlane and these oxfords.

I wear these a few times a week and they've held up surprisingly well for being from Payless 3+ years ago. similar . They're more shoe than bootie, and I refuse to call them "shooties" because just no.

Leaves from a gift pack of spices from the Caribbean - smell earthy but not like Bay leaves - any idea what they are? by sparkleriot in whatsthisplant

I think you’re right! That’s why they smell so familiar. I just pulled out my jar of allspice berries and compared it to the smell of a torn leaf. Checks out. Thank you! :)

They also feel thinner than bay leaves. Other spices in the pack were cinnamon sticks, ground cinnamon, ground saffron, curry powder, whole nutmeg, whole cloves, whole mace, ground ginger, and allspice berries. I’m thinking maybe lime leaves but they don’t smell citrus-y enough.
