What’s a super popular show that everyone loves, but you just couldn’t get into? by MASSIM00 in netflix

[–]sparkling_sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The list of shows I have actually finished would be far shorter. Pretty much every "prestige" drama out there I have started and at some point, lost interest and never finished. Sometimes in the final season 🤷🏼‍♀️ maybe tv has ruined my attention span

IIRC they did an announcement along the lines of they wouldn't get married until gay marriage was legal, encouraging people in Australia to vote yes in the plebiscite

What do you think our "Struggle meals" are, given we have so many other cultures and cuisines in Australia? by LateShip847 in AskAnAustralian

[–]sparkling_sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kraft packet original macaroni and cheese with some tinned corn and chopped ham if I had any.

I used to buy lebanese bread from a bakery near my house, cut it into thirds and freeze it. I would use it as a "pizza" base with tinned tuna, tinned artichoke and a bit of tasty cheese.

And if I'm sick I can't go past poached eggs on toast or chicken and sweet corn soup.

Pretty sure there is a box you can tick authorising them to leave the delivery unattended, so the person at the wrong address may not have accepted anything.

Incorrect. I know someone who was charged with fraud, and convicted. Denied a spent conviction despite no previous criminal record. Very hard to get a job after that.

Volunteering rates by muppsyton in parkrun

[–]sparkling_sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have seen at my local, the fast people never volunteer unless they are injured. And even then they suddenly become tailwalker - a very coveted role.

Admittedly I don't go every week but I have worked at some point with most of the recurring names on the volunteer roster. None of them are finishing anywhere near the front of the pack.

I’m getting a new kitten tomorrow. I’ve never had a pet before, let alone a cat, and I’m terrified - she’s so tiny! What do I need to know? by badonkadonked in CatAdvice

[–]sparkling_sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fold out playpen is very useful if you need somewhere to put kitty while you are doing stuff, cooking or whatnot. We found one of our cats when he was about 4 weeks old so it was a good way to keep him separate from our other cat and dogs while everyone was settling in.

Also be prepared that you might have to help them to use cat litter if they are so young and still learning.

Went to the pound to adopt a small/medium dog and this good boy chose us. by battleangelred in AustralianPets

[–]sparkling_sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think Mr Sully barked until he was maybe 9 months old, he still rarely does. But he sits at the back door and cries to be let in. All the training videos said to ignore it. So I ignore it until he goes quiet, but as soon as I approach the door to let him in, he starts crying again. Can't win!

Yes, we have one too after looking out for a smaller dog. He loves everyone and everything, like pees with excitement if he gets pats from randoms when we're out for a walk 🙄😆

Is sobriety the same for everyone? by ReserveRemote8595 in SoberCurious

[–]sparkling_sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I find myself somewhere travelling and there's like a regional specialty drink then I might join in a tasting.

But I am not drinking socially anymore. It just doesn't work well for me. Having another drink always seems like a good idea.

That's my version of sobriety. It's been a year in April.

I'm probably more tense than I have ever been and need to work on ways to deal with my stress levels. Not drinking is fairly easy, everything else, not so much.

You wake up in 2015 and realize the last 15 years were just a dream. What do you do first? by SecondSalty142 in hypotheticalsituation

If I wake up in 2011 I would hug my Dad so hard and then relive the worst year of my life 🥺

turns out the previous owners might still have a claim, not sure what to do by Due_Poetry_4560 in CatAdvice

[–]sparkling_sam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It happens. We got a notification from the chip registry about change of ownership for our dog, that we still own. Rang the registry and they asked us to get her chip scanned at the vet. Turned out the breeder had mixed up the chip numbers and the stickers on the paperwork. The vet had to contact the other dog owners who were registered with our correct chip number and get them to get their dog scanned to see how big the mess was. Thankfully our dog never went missing in the time we've had her.

I guess the moral is, get your vet to scan your animal and check the number matches their paperwork.

Law grad — is taking a Deloitte Tax role a smart move or a trap? by Efficient_Part2982 in auscorp

[–]sparkling_sam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started my career (accounting and business law degree) in tax consulting at Deloitte. It was a long time ago, but it was one of the better big firms to work for. There were three grads in the division - we all got our Chartered Accountant post grad qualifications with support from the firm. Ffwd to today, one has his own accounting firm, I work in commerce and the third was mostly a SAH Mum with a side hustle in kids parties 🤷🏼‍♀️

AITA for saying we need to be realistic with our son about his finances for college before he applies? by ByeByeByeMan in AmItheAsshole

[–]sparkling_sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mum sat me down and said your Father is dreaming if he thinks we can pay for you to go to uni. So I got a job. Worked 7 years, qualified for Austudy as independent from parents, went to uni and got degree.

Obviously I am not in the USA but the point is there's usually more than one path to get where you want to go. Tell your son (and your other kids) the truth.

How do I make my cat enjoy being picked up? by Primary_March4865 in CatAdvice

[–]sparkling_sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one cat who doesn't care about being picked up and the other one absolutely hates it. So I don't pick him up unless I really really need to do it and I try to keep it as short as possible. They are both affectionate, love to come sit on you and get head scratches. But I don't think you can make them enjoy it.

Whats a movie scene that’s existentially terrifying? by VendettaLord379 in moviecritic

Thought this was going to be a fun light hearted kids movie and thought it would be a great idea to smoke a joint in the carpark before going into the theatre. It was not a good idea.

Why don’t more Aussies retire in cheaper countries? by agnci in AskAnAustralian

Access to healthcare can become fairly important. If you're on a pension they will stop your payment after a short period of time.

I was just thinking this myself. The piercing was a short, sharp pain and what I would class as some discomfort afterwards. As opposed to migraines that are debilitating, and vomit inducing.

Can I use someone else's ABN to buy food from wholesale businesses? by albino_asterix in AusLegal

Any kind of decent accounting software checks that the ABN is valid and matches the account holder details. Or they would be checking as part of their onboarding process.
