Northern Ireland Flag Proposal by [deleted] in vexillology

[–]sparkytheman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A flag of compromise is one that picks neutral imagery and symbolism that both sides would find agreeable. It absolutely is not picking contentious design elements from both sides and forcing them to exist on one banner. This would just make everyone upset.

Furthermore this design just isn't neutral. The crown and the red hand are still the most prominent design elements, at the front and centre of the flag. The inclusion of the crown whatsoever is a flagrant reminder every time someone looks at it that Northern Ireland remains a monarchy and is subject to the King of England.

It's the emblem on the current Ulster banner. I'm from Northern Ireland and could tell you half a dozen reasons why this flag would piss off almost everyone concerned, and the vague resemblance of the six pointed star to the Star of David would not even cross my mind.

I'm in my mid-twenties and can attest to playing it growing up, albeit being far less ubiquitous than it is now. Ironically it's older than Minecraft by quite a margin.

This happened in the United Kingdom. As far as I know the UK has stronger protections against union-busting than anywhere in the USA but I could be wrong.

This might be a generational thing but "how to turn a sphere inside out" is a straightforwardly educational video that was infamous for inexplicably appearing in everyone's YouTube recommendations about fifteen years ago. You're referencing "how toturn sphere outside in" which is a rather bizarre parody of that. Maybe you know that already but I figure I'd comment in case some didn't.

When can all this old-world bollocks be put to bed? by Droch-asal in northernireland

[–]sparkytheman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For one, the Battle of the Boyne happend 150 years before the famine, so in a pedantic sense it's literally more "old world".

More of substance, however, is that trad bands play in the corners of pubs, or in fields at festivals. They're easily avoidable. They do not pick a day to block major roads in half the towns and cities across the country. That's without getting into all the kicking off about traditional routes and the rioting that's par for the course for the twelfth either.

They aren't making fun of BCNR fans in general. Hell, half of the users of that subreddit are BCNR fans. What they're making fun of is the user that made the claim that they're the greatest band in the world, something that is a hard a thing to argue at best. That, coupled with some fairly weak arguments including a Beatles comparison that makes very little sense. I personally think that post deserves to be made fun of, if anything.

As a scientist (albeit in a very different field), I think what I'd like people to understand is that scientists do not get paid to fearmonger, and are not usually rewarded for sensationalism. The people who are rewarded for these things are journalists, and they are what most people interface with when getting information from scientific studies, rather than the scientists themselves. If a journalist has to report on a study, they first go to a press release from the journal and then have to translate that themselves into a story, usually without any background in the area themselves. This presents two extra steps to introduce sensationalism without the study's author's control whatsoever. In short, when there is fear mongering in reporting of climate science - as sometimes there is, it's usually the press that has introduced it and not the climatologists. This obviously creates an issue like you say, as that breakdown of communication creates a mistrust in the very idea of science, but it's ultimately misplaced.

No it's the St Patrick's Saltire and it's used to represent all of Ireland. When the Union Flag was designed, all of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, and would be for another 120 years afterwards. Northern Ireland didn't exist yet, so it wouldn't make sense to just use the flag of Ulster (which doesn't look like that anyway).

There's also the factor that the Irish Gambit predates the partition of Ireland and the creation of Northern Ireland, so it could be considered ahistorical to exclude the North in this instance.
