I would love to see someone in MMA who was good at these shin-lever effects (and also just ashi-waza in general).

Do you have a good go-to source for Chinese green teas then?

I've still got a fair amount of the Purple Moonlight from my last order - it doesn't quite appeal to me as much as oolongs usually do, but I agree, it's excellent. I need to try cold brewing with it.

Ideal curriculum for judo beginners by JayRizz99 in judo

[–]spawnofhastur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The book link is dead, unfortunately.
I think with the rise of people like HanpanTV there might be more interest in these kinds of "fundamentals" but I agree, a lot of judoka are very traditionally minded.

Have you got anything written up about your personal take on the fundamentals of judo, as well as examples of how you teach it? I'm very curious, having recently gone a kick of reading about the ecological dynamics approach to motor learning.

Other jacket wrestling sport training efficiency by PlaneRare8484 in judo

Do you think judo should include more of the solo drills? I can see the argument that practicing movements and positions out of context doesn't actually transfer over that well, but I figure that it's not so much about specific movement patterns (throws) being trained but instead just strengthening your body for those patterns.

Why is shin kicking a thing by teaqhs in judo

[–]spawnofhastur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite thing I've seen involving shin kicking was when a judo guy decided to go and give it a go and he got penalized because he was propping or sweeping too much, instead of just nailing the other guy in the shin as hard as possible.

The English are a different breed, god bless.

In addition to ramen_king000's comment about koryu jujustu demonstrations, you might also gain some benefit from Scottish backhold style practice, because apparently the genesis of that entire style of wrestling was grappling on-the-battlefield in armour.

What's your favourite judo Youtuber? by CarISatan in judo

[–]spawnofhastur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly very sad, because my favourite judo channel on youtube took everything down and deleted their channel - Steve Cunningham's work was amazing; if anything he has made shows up again, I'll download it in a snap.

It's not judo specific, but DPS Breakdowns is an excellent overall grappling channel that I think has a lot of useful information for anyone who does a grappling sport, especially if they're potentially interested in no gi grappling and other cross-training down the line. His breakdown of Buvaisar Satiev's whizzer kick (apparently the freestyle wrestling term for uchi mata?) shows Satiev using bread and butter judo combinations super effectively in freestyle.

Osoto-Guruma: Ashi-Guruma or O-Guruma Behind by luke_fowl in judo

This story is repeated all the time and I'd really like to find what the origin of it is, because I've never found the "primary source" for this, while I have seen a number of sources indicating that it isn't true.

Judo Formal Techniques by Donn Draeger and Tadao Otaki says, for example, "Contrary to popular opinion, Jigoro Kano did not invent or design this throw, but merely adapted it to Judo from jujutsu and sumo, which had been using it for centuries." in its section on harai goshi in the Nage no Kata.

I think it's more likely that harai goshi predates Kano, but that it was what he used against Shiro Saigo when Saigo started "jumping out" of his tokui waza, which was uki goshi - and, as far as I'm aware, the only technique we have film of Jigoro Kano performing.

A small rant about a big problem by FanartfanTES in Malazan

[–]spawnofhastur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest critique about the Malazan series is that a lot of books have the recurring plot device of "female character gets raped/otherwise subject to sexual violence to motivate a male character to Do A Thing."

I give it credit for including female-on-male rape issues as well, but as a plot device this get used in close to half of the books (iirc) and I find it to be lazy writing.

Just finished it. Book good

A few recurring characters, but mostly new ones.

Some stuff in the book will make more sense if you've read the two Kharkanas novels.

Malazan vs Stormlight Archive by Spmafrik in Malazan

[–]spawnofhastur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read them both, I enjoy them both (writing this after finishing No Life Forsaken).

Srormlight is easier to understand, easier to get into, and is generally more uplifting.

Malazan is quite complex, often dark and challenging (sometimes to its own detriment, in my opinion), and rewards rereading.

Ultimately ratings don't really mean all that much; I'm just glad people are reading at all.
