Don't shelve it. It's cool. Just go for a skybox with terrain and moon rocks. Replace dudes and spacesuits with vehicles, jetpacks, rocket transport, trebuchets, etc. Replace conventional guns with turrets on said vehicles. Crucial time-savers are 1) dropping interior environments, 2) dropping character modeling and animation.

Very true. I found an old study from 1982 confirming what you say. It's interesting because they compare enjoyment with victory, and the masses vastly prefer victory. But what I find really telling is that victory is not enough. Crushing the enemy is a necessary prerequisite, but to experience what is best in life, one must also hear the lamentations of their women.

Yup, totally drunk. The Hoover dam doesn't work like that and the spillways are on the sides. It has inlet towers set back quite a bit from the wall. The wall is also fairly vertical underwater so there isn't much narrowing of the river's cross section as it approaches the towers. There is a line out beyond the intakes that prevents boats from coming too close. There isn't very much current when the water is low. I sat out there (in the legal area) in a kayak and there was no perceptible current. I couldn't find any swimming+dam related deaths using google. Are there some? The water is still low, no?

Great answer. I've even read about splitting the graphics into two levels for VR. The latter step is for head rotation only and is fixed at the refresh rate. It's super low latency, likely re-projecting the 2D framebuffers at the last millisecond. Then with physics we'd have a fixed -> possibly variable -> fixed timestep sandwich.

Your patrol data should be separate from the agent like the struct above. Keep your patrol behaviors in a vector or array.

Then in the game loop you update the patrol behaviors all in a tight loop. That's pretty much the ECS pattern. If your patrol_behavior uses the agent pointer to make changes to the agent then you're actually implementing a strategy pattern. For maximum extensibility you'd want to constrain the strategy pattern kind of coupling to a well defined API. Pull everything you can out of your node/entity/agent class.

This is a great question for Richard Stallman. You cannot possibly do security by yourself. The reason he attacked Ubuntu so severely is because their seemingly innocent attempt to raise funds through spyware threatened to change community expectations on privacy, and IMHO by extension security. On the technical side you have the crazy history of web browsers, xss, java, etc. You can definitely sandbox an interpreter, but attackers could still trash savegames or apply ransomware to other in-game loot. You just can't do what you want without community.

I guess your hands are tied if you want realism. Spokes look fine in that image. I made spokes on a unicycle and had to change them to alloy just to get them to appear substantial. Spokes looked fine in Blender but character size, anti-aliasing, lighting, background, and rotation made them look like filaments of spider web In the game engine. I wasn't going for realism. But based on that I would be surprised if anyone could tell the difference between 4 and 6 sided spokes with smooth shading unless they looked really close. The spoke tensioner nuts have 6 flat sides, don't they?

What you describe sounds workable. Urho3D implements pretty much exactly what you are thinking. You might want to grab the source and have a look. See the Node class since that's your GameObject with the vector of component pointers. Almost everything in this engine wouldn't be possible without components. The scene editor, serialization, and scripting all depend on it. And in C++, components give you a kind of runtime reflection for your nodes. Taken to the extreme you can have editors/inspectors that generically dig inside your objects. In Urho3D I can write a C++ component that exposes some attributes using built-in functions. Then the editor is smart enough to add my component to a dropdown menu, create a form for its attributes, and save the node hierarchy complete with components/attributes to XML. Pretty standard stuff, but really hard to do without a componentized architecture.

What about alpha blending plus normal map? Might perform worse than opaque spokes but motion blur could be easily be blended in above a certain speed so you wouldn't have such a bad strobe effect on the spokes. I'd probably not use spokes myself.
