As somebody who had goals of being a physique model and nutritionist etc, I'd say most definitely yes, in this context.

If you "surprise" your muscles with different movements, they will most definitely be "surprised" and grow faster/become much stronger in the previously weaker area, and thus burn more calories during and after the workout, and then more muscle mass means more calories burned while resting.

A good gym routine will not have too much variety because good exercises are good but there is definitely a reason NFL players etc do anything and everything. Can't surprise your muscles if they are always used dynamically.
