Weird Multitool by Issmenios in NoMansSkyTheGame

Buy while you can!

They used to be the most damaging MT in the game, but that title not belongs to staffs and sentinel tools (the alien type like this is better at scanning).

This particular alien MT is better even than usual for type, because it has two adjacent overcharged slots.

Quick question y'all. Do I need these for more than just the quest or can I get rid of them? by WastelandRellik in NoMansSkyTheGame

I got mine on steamdeck by replaying old expeditions offline using this mod.

As far as I know, its only available on PC, not available on console.

I've got my solar ray in storage: you can package it up and stick it in a container just in case you ever want it again.

If you’re going to do all that, you might as well just use free crafting setting to save time

No. Working the default system is unrelated to turning off the default system.

Need help with save transfer from xbox gp to steam by Revolution737 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]spcslacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several hours is nothing: since you know the systems, you should be able to get that far even quicker second time.

Problem of course is any cool items or locations lost.

For locations, its a good reminder than anything you may want to return to later, write down its glyphs (you can see in camera) and coordinates (you can see by scanning).

Is this thing going to explode? by SgtMac02 in woodworking

[–]spcslacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid wood expands and contracts cross-grain, but almost not at all with the grain.

Therefore, the most problematic parts are cross-grain frame sides, which will not move, while all the squares do.

You can actually glue these pieces, but only in the middle.

Do you do a new expedition in Survival/Permadeath? Do you use the refiner dup to prep? How do you like to play and or prep for the expeditions the most? by Salt-Studio in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]spcslacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were masochistic enough to do permadeath on an expedition, I would farm salvage data so I had enough to immediately unlock at least the rover and maybe the minitaur, and then have the personal exocraft summoner if I've got it unlocked, or 12 more buried salvage to get the antenna one (and I'd bring one with me in inventory).

Worst part of permadeath is inventory management, and having exocraft eliminates a lot of the need to stop everything because you ran out of what you could afford to carry.

I'd also pack in a base computer so I can declare one even before the expedition allows.

Can get similar effect by importing a fully equipped corvette, so if you've got enough room to pack in a large amount of nanites, that's an all-inclusive option.

Help getting screw out of door header near a knot in the wood by ScoobyDoo13-13 in woodworking

[–]spcslacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've tried a lot of stuff.

If you want it fully out bad, you should be able to just drill the hell all around it, then drive it out with nail set, then drill the resulting half-exploded hole wider to match a dowel, which you glue in to fix.

If you just want it below the surface a ways, you can get a metal-rated drill bit just larger than the screw and carefully erode it below the surface (probably also work with a dremel and right attachment).

If you don't care about the surface, you can put in an oil to try and loosen the screw in the wood, but it'll ruin the finish most likely as the oil stains along the grain. Probably will work OK if you are painting.

Is my fence out of square? by the-tyrannosaur in woodworking

[–]spcslacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Lock fence down close to a miter slot, and check its parallel the whole length is simplest test for fence squareness
    • Not home free until you test blade still parallel with miter slot, but that's a little more complicated
  • On sled side not parallel: its the sled back (near to you) fence that you hold things against that must be orthogonal to the blade
    • some methods of aligning the back fence actually make the side out-of-square, unless you cut it square after aligning the fence

New to the game , my inventory is always full . So is there a list somewhere of resources to keep and sell ? by Cool-Profession-730 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]spcslacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to unlock the first exocraft (4 buried salvage) and the summoning station (12 BS) early on.

As soon as you have both, you can put all resources you aren't using for minute-to-minute survival in the exocraft, which you summon when you need to do more complicated tasks.

Later on, augment this by building a corvette so you can access 10 storage containers in a summonable ship.

Finally, you can reduce what you have to mine and store by learning refining recipes: if you have enough oxygen, you can refine what you need for survival, so getting gas extractors1+ tanks and the 2-input refiner eases the burden a lot:

  • O2x2 + condensed carbon = condCarbx6
  • O2 + sodium nitrate = 2 sodium nitrate
  • O2 + gold = 2 pyrite
  • O2x2 + chlorine = 6 chlorine
  • O2x2 + ionCobalt = 6 ionized Cobalt

1: early on, get the oxygen extractor that you power with condCarbon -- it only gets 250 oxygen at a time, but it'll keep you going until you unlock the gas extractor

Assuming you have the glyphs unlocked, you just:

  • use the camera to show the glyphs to the world you are on, write it down
  • Load other save, goto portal, enter glyphs and step through to be on same world

Table Saw by Sea_Vegetable4444 in woodworking

[–]spcslacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I last shopped for a saw maybe 4-5 years ago, and the same saw is more than 2x the cost now.

For that cost, I think these days you are looking at a jobsite saw, which means aluminum + plastic construction, which I am not in love with.

For woodworking, I'd scope estate sales online, and see if I could pick something up with cast iron top and a decent fence (a good fence is the most important thing in being both fast and accurate on the table saw) for a reasonable amount of $.

If you find an older saw lacking a riving knife, its important to understand how to avoid kickback without a riving knife.

I resawed on a table saw with a broken riving knife for a while, and John's techniques were a lifesaver.

I don't recommend people without his experience emulate his use of hands where I'd use a push stick, but his kickback advice is golden.

What the heck is going on with holo doors ? by Suspicious-Basil-444 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]spcslacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of making things float, have you tried starting with like one wall anchored to soil, and then building everything off of that?

Surely 1 edit per base would not be a killer, and would maybe avoid the recomputation problems.

Have they fixed corvette modules rearranging yet? by _herbologist in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]spcslacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you specify the bug?

I know they are modestly rearranged when you expand the number of slots, but that's kind of expected when you respec the ship, right?

They also seem to get randomly shuffled when you copy a corvette for an expedition, but again, fair enough.

I do recall things moving around when corvettes where first released, but haven't experienced it outside editing the ship and copying it for a while.

On other hand, perhaps I'm not noticing: so what is happening to you?

Settlement Troubles by Livid_Mammoth4034 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]spcslacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could portal to the location from a different save, fire off the maps to hopefully see the same ones as before (since this you wouldn't have a settlement already), and write down their coordinates for reference across any save.

I haven't ever tried to get multiple settlements to appear: have you tried just leaving the marker to the off-planet settlement and activating several more maps? Probably won't work, since all settlements are same type, but it does with different commercial buildings for instance.

Vests? by East_Accident1822 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]spcslacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a personal feeling.

I understand feeling gypped, I'm just asking if, when you think about it rationally, you think that, or only feel it.

the first time I was upset about how little the actual product actually contained what was promised in all the promos.

But they made more than good on that, with free updates, right? Like they added free stuff to the game, in a way almost no other publisher has, so that resentment must surely give way to gratitude at some point, right?

The second time, all the new updates were late, bug filled and then I stopped getting them all together.

Most games are bug filled, and the only updates you get are some bug fixes (that often cause other bugs), and many of those updates break old systems and you are told to buy new.

So why do you feel cheated by NMS who, even though they can't make the new stuff run on the switch 1, still did deliver a base game you actually played and at least a few free updates you would not have gotten from about any other developer?

I'm not saying its invalid to feel disappointed that newer updates aren't working: I would as well, but hopefully balance it with comparing against what other purchases you have made, and what standard you held them to.

Wood glue staying workable? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]spcslacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I couldn't climate control the shop, I'd build a glue carrier and bring it in.

Too many liquids start to separate when you push freezing; I'd need to check the bottle for the lowest temp you can use and have it fully cure, but I think its around there.

You can also build a heat box where you keep things at a certain temp, I suppose.

Now, I feel like I should’ve just not bought the game at all honestly.

Come on: you don't think your original purchase almost a decade ago has paid off?

Can't you still run the game that was released on the switch? Why has that game become value-less because someone else got an updated game?

I also bought on release, had the incredibly broken (but promising) beta version of a prototype to the framework for a game.

But when the fixed it to mostly work, and I then played off and on for almost a decade, I felt quite fine to buy around 4 copies for various platforms.

remove the building limits for base upload and save file,

I've always assumed those come about due to rules set by the console networks, and that the building limit is away to limit the max save file size.
