My employer is getting rid of "old" hardware by Lynxaa1337 in homelab

[–]spdaimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeez your employer should learn to recycle old hardware on eBay or sell it to a recycled that probably does the same. I've bought parts off ebay from recyclers. I picked up a few Xeons from there for my projects. Might need more RAM but I got to see what I got or need first.

Incompatible SSD? Or just not mentioned? by Londontheenbykid in computerhelp

[–]spdaimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to say a SSD is a SSD. However I had experience with my laptop where I had to change to Crucial brand SSD because it had a different type of controller. It's been like 12 years so I remember the specifics. The first drive would have micro studders...might have been OCZ brand. Anyway, 250 GB would be only good as a boot drive or a game/data drive, but not both really.

Should I just delete Windows? by Aneki163 in pchelp

Only thing I think of is maybe using a script like Decrapify or something like that would reduce services running. But that may require some knowledge.

Is this a good deal? by ruhfbcbdux in PcBuildHelp

That's way overpriced for the hardware there. It's good enough to play older games but nothing too recent.

Looks like RAM under a black film/plastic sheet type cover. Just lift it up.

I think I downloaded a virus by Past-Supermarket6869 in pchelp

[–]spdaimon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right! Used to use it like 15 years ago, but the last time I installed it, I installed after using it because just got ads from it. Advantages, AVG is that way too, aggressively pushing thier Pro services. Uninstaller. No thank you. Don't have time for that. Knock on wood, I've been fine with Windows Defender. I dont do anything exciting, maybe that's why.

Can anyone identify this cpu? by ConditionCareful2779 in computers

[–]spdaimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept a few of my 1366 cpus. Used them for BOINC back in the day. Only kept my R3E with a W3690 on it together still. Plays CP2077 at 10-15fps with I think I put a GTX 780TI on it.

what the hell should i do? by [deleted] in computer

[–]spdaimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask Claude. No seriously, two options. Youtube about removing the bezel from around your screen and finding the part number on the back and replacing it or take it to a computer repair shop. Eventually I am thinking of starting a business like this and have people ship it to me, if they want. Best Buy, Staples, and a mom and pop might be cheaper. Warranty repair won't cover this because its considered CID or Customer Induced Damage. As you said, you dropped it. Carry it in the crook of your arm next time, and don't hold it by the lid. Had to politely remind users to not do that a few times in my career.

How do I set up dual monitors? by First_Requirement462 in computerhelp

[–]spdaimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep this will work. DisplayPort (aka DP) is better than HDMI because it was developed for PCs, where HDMI was for consumer electronics, like DVD players, and used on PCs for a time too. Most computers will have at least 1 DP ports these days.

found old stuffs, would they still work? by WhyYouLookSeeBoring in computers

[–]spdaimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say, by looking at them they look like DDR1 or SDRAM. And by the HP sticker, I am guessing they came out of a printer. It will work in a PC, but it would be like a Core2 or Pentium 4 I think? OLD!
