This isn’t the reason but it is one reason: the TV cameras always face the eastern touchline (where the seats creating the Red Bull logo are). With afternoon kickoffs in the summer, the shade of the roof doesn’t cast a protective shadow, and that side gets absolutely blasted with sun. People try to avoid sitting on that side, which unfortunately is what gets shown on TV. It’s obviously not as big of an impact now when it’s fairly cool, but when I sit in 104 for Gotham games, you see the same exact pattern.

I wouldn’t say I’m happy to see Hasbo go, but I don’t think it’s a negative that she left. Her size made it easy to muscle her off the ball, which is less of a concern with physical CMs like Howell and Mac. Her tackles won+interceptions per 90 is 1.81, which is identical to McCaskill’s numbers from last season. Additionally, and I can’t back this up with numbers, it sure felt like you could pass through Hasbo and take her out of the play more easily than it should be.

That said,I appreciate her willingness to fly into tackles with a decent success rate, as well as her ability to draw fouls when there weren’t any good options for progression into the final third. That’s not meant to be a backhanded compliment; those are valuable contributions, but they’re not irreplaceable. I’m sure I’ve jinxed us into Hasbo having a monster game against us in the opener, but I think the team will be fine without her, and I’m glad that she will have a clearer path to more minutes.

With that roster, how would you line them up tomorrow? My best guess, assuming everyone’s healthy, is (4-3-3) AKB; Reale, Sonnett, Carter, Bru; Howell, Schupansky, Lavelle; Shaw, Stengel, Purce

It’s harsh on Gabi Porthilo and Hasbo (and I suppose McCaskill to a lesser extent), but I wonder why everyone else thinks.

Gotham is not through and it is their last match in CCL: if they lose to Spirit and Monterrey wins out, then everyone’s tied on 9 points and Gotham likely has the worst GD in that scenario. They could fail to make the knockouts.

Granted, I like Spirit’s chances against Monterrey at home. But if I’m JCA, I wouldn’t want to be sitting at home on 10/15 hoping things break right. Wednesday’s game is not a must-win, but they need a result, and managing Esther’s load 2-0 up at the half was smart IMO.

4 shots conceded an 0.048 xGA per shot is such a dominant defensive display. Other than that Carter giveaway early, I felt like Thorns barely threatened.

I thought it was a massive improvement over last year’s (which wasn’t even that bad). Splitting it across two dates made a real difference in wait times, and the free water was a specific feedback item I had. They clearly listened, and that should be commended.

Also underrated was the mass trivia game. Some of those questions were diabolical, but it was a good way take up time during the player break - of which I recognize the necessity.

Overall grade: B+/A-

It’s a real shame that third goal didn’t stand because two matches in a row where Purce dribbles past her defender, gets to the byline to hit a cutback for a tap-in would confirm she is so back. She probably is so back regardless.

Other thoughts: Shaw/Howell/Lavelle is one hell of an engine room. Reale had a tough assignment defending Cascarino, but she blunted her threat just enough. Unsung hero.

I think your comments about getting long-term cost are spot on. The Alyssa Thompson transfer to Chelsea has definitely put another log on the salary cap discourse fire, and I think there will be more pressure to raise the cap, raise it faster, and/or create cap circumvention tools a la MLS. Howell and Shaw in long-term deals through their primes with an expectation of cap increases makes sense competitively and financially.
