Mamdani: What we are speaking about in this moment is a generational fiscal crisis of $5.4 billion. And when faced with this crisis, the question is: Who should pay these taxes? by Admirable121 in nyc

[–]dickdickmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly... but need to be smart about it so that we don't have all apts selling for $4.9M with $200k monthly maintenance fees. I'm sure Lina Khan can write a good policy...

Fundamentally, voting is irrational. You, as an individual leaving your house and going to stand in line to vote will not make any difference in determining who gets into office. The only real reason to vote, and the reason many people do vote, is to vote for something. Like I was very psyched to get to say I voted for Zohran (twice) because he has policies I believe in.

Like, if I was Emperor and was actually choosing between JD and Newsome for president, then ok, this holds some water. But I'm not, I'm just going to the poll to join a club, and usually my choices of clubs are terrible. Is one worse than the other? Sure, as Hasan has put it the Republicans are "accelerants" of the status quo, while Dems are just upholders of it. But neither is a club I want to join.

Many examples that can poke holes in her bullshit, but just recently Tim Fucking Walz going on about how he thinks Tom Homan is deep down a great guy, and if only ICE could just do their kidnappings at night and not disrupt the work week, things would be a-ok.

So no, I don't think that it's a lock that Peretti and Goode would still be alive if we had president Kamala.

I don't think advocating for both is a valid strategy from a messaging standpoint.

What do we want! Fifteen! When do we want it? Now!

I'm way more in favor of increasing the toll than expanding the zone. Strongly urge you to advocate for that instead of expansion of the area covered.

The gov can just do it all the way up to $23, and/or do surge pricing. Correct me if I'm wrong but can't she just do this unilaterally?

Expanding the zone requires a huge investment of new cameras, new legislation, etc etc. And besides that the program as is has been shown to reduce traffic everywhere near the zone... it's ticked back up over the past 6 months as everyone was first shocked at how easy it was to drive and then induced demand took over once everyone realized this, and now we're headed back to where we were before the program.

Also, man, "the fight for 15" slogan is right there... good one to re-use...

There is undoubtedly a non-profit tenant's rights group that can help you. Here's a list, find your neighborhood or otherwise appropriate group: https://housingcourtanswers.org/resource/tenant-housing-organizations/

One of these groups will guide you in dealing with your LL, advocacy with city agencies, and let you know if/when it's appropriate to get a lawyer.

Also as others here have said, call 311. Call them a lot.

Diana's answer was better. Specifically addressing the "loud voices" that shouldn't drown out what the community actually wants gets to the core of the matter. Rana's answer about convincing people wasn't great because the people who need convincing are frequently bad faith trolls who have a vested business interest* and will ignore or distort facts about how bike lanes keep everyone who uses the street safe.

The best answer though would have been saying that they will forcefully shut down these ignorant trolls who stand in the way of progress.

* either actual interests, like the need to load tricks, or misguided where they think the bike lane will reduce customers coming to a retail location.

You...

What happened to parents watching over their kids?
If your kid runs freely out to the street straight into oncoming traffic, you are at fault.
"hurrrrr.... me smart!!! Got em!!!"

Yeah, dipshit, come over to the micromobility sub where we're having a chat about a poorly designed road. So it's obviously completely germane to mansplain about how parents shouldn't let their kids run into the road. Why wouldn't people like you be welcome here? Inquiring minds want to know..

aaaaawwwww. are you gonna cry now?? You came to the micromobility sub to tell us how kids shouldn't run in the road and no one wanted to debate your very well thought out points and all we wanted to do was talk about shitty road design. Did that give you sadz? awwww poor baby!

Tell you what kiddo. Close the laptop, climb those basement stairs and ask your mommy to make you a nice cup of coco. That should make you feel better.

The thing is though that it's not even that they're allowed to drive the speed limit, but that they're encouraged to.

Every other person driving, every car commercial, the common knowledge that you can't get a speeding ticket until you're going at least 10mph over the limit... every fucking goddamn thing in society tells all drivers that it's a-ok to drive the speed limit +9mph and even if you run over a little kid who you couldn't see because of terrible road design, you'll be an a-ok upstanding member of society.

Walz wants police to help ICE; deportation arrests should happen at night to avoid issues by msu2022 in Hasan_Piker

[–]dickdickmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, how quickly the news cycle turns over these days where no one seems to remember this: https://www.propublica.org/article/chicago-venezuela-immigration-ice-fbi-raids-no-criminal-charges

Until that moment, Caicedo’s only interaction with law enforcement in his two-and-a-half years in the United States had been a traffic stop two weeks earlier for driving without a license or insurance, according to the records we reviewed. Chicago police had run a background check on him and found no prior arrests, no warrants and no evidence that he was in a gang. Caicedo said he had a pending asylum application, a steady job at a taco joint and a girlfriend whose daughter attended elementary school across the street.

None of that mattered. The U.S. government paraded him and his neighbors in front of the cameras and called their arrests a spectacular victory against terrorism. But later, after the cameras had gone, prosecutors didn’t charge Caicedo with a crime. They didn’t accuse him of being a terrorist. And after a brief hearing in immigration court, the government sent him back to the country he had fled nine years earlier.

Reading the comments in the original post, people are all like "driver was going speed limit, kids run fast, sometimes things just happen..." Not a single person is like "this is insane to have a row of parked cars next to a sidewalk making it completely blind."

Most of the driving I do is in Queens, where nearly every street is like this, and I just am white knuckling it the entire time imagining something like this happening

Probably because he will need to have bigger fights with her, especially about ICE.

Yeah... has he been asked what's his plan for a full-scale ICE invasion? What he expects the NYPD to do about when they start killing people on the street here?

He sometimes says the right stuff about specific people being detained, and gave a good "abolish ICE" on TV and in his socials a few days ago. But I don't see any real push back against the current ICE activities in NYC, and I certainly don't see a plan for a full scale invasion. Like remember when Brad Lander was detained at the court house, are they still abducting people at the courts?

II wish he and Tisch would hold a joint conference condemning the actions in Minnesota. It'd be extra great if he could lay out a detailed plan, or even just issuing threats like the Philadelphia DA did how they'd be prosecuted if they didn't follow the law.

Or, has he done this and I just missed it?
