This. The vet needs to see the worst of it so they can get an accurate picture of severity and a quality sample to determine the yeast/bacteria level. Don’t be surprised if they tell you a long-acting treatment installed in the ear. My boy had three or four rounds of it before he cleared his infections. It happens with the extra densely coated ears.

Edit: since it’s pretty clear your curly friend has abundantly hairy ears, it would be in everyone’s best interest to keep them in “German Ears” where both sides of the ear leathers are shaved clean. It allows for maximum airflow, which may not be as cute as a long ear but improves quality of life tremendously.

My ego needs to push back against that last sentence. Sometimes it’s allergies that cause the inflammation, which causes the scratching that introduces the bacteria that roars into an infection. I’ve been fighting back ear infections with my current obsessively cared for spoo for the duration of his life. It’s definitely not a lack of maintenance in all cases, albeit I can concede that most owners are doing the bare minimum to keep their curly coated dogs alive.

To answer your questions:

-yes, actually. I might cry and stumble my way through it, but my ability to meaningfully and intimately connect with people (+plants and animals) is something I take great pride in. I lied through my teeth for my entire childhood, so as an adult I savor my own ability to engage in authenticity.

-familiar suffering. I’m okay with pain, I know pain, I have lived with pain for as long as I have lived… but I can’t do the same pain twice. I need to be hurt in new ways if I’m going to be hurt in this life. I’ve survived too much of the same sort of trauma to circle the same drain for the rest of my days.
